No Guns, No Problem

The second amendment entitles the people to own or bear arms. Many people today believe that gun rights should be repealed or removed for the Bill of Rights, but I believe that this is one of our very first amendments and it is one of the most important ones, because it keeps the government from imposing tyranny or an oppressive government upon the people. The second amendment also give us the ability to protect ourselves without the government taking the right away from you. History is filled with stories of government overpowering people, and without the second amendment these problems will repeat themselves. The past couple of months this year believe that gun laws or rights are being violated, and many people are voting to repeal the second amendment because of these people hurting others with the right to own a gun.

United States is a country that has problems with gun control, and this issue has many debates between whether or not people should be allowed to carry a gun on them. This free county not only for speech and religion, but also allows people to have the right to bear arms. The Second Amendment of the United States was written by our Founding Fathers,“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Government). The main purpose of the Second Amendment when our Founding Fathers wrote this amendment was to help the American citizens to defend themselves from the government at that time, and other countries from invading their properties. However,

Owning a gun is legal in the United States for self-defense or hunting or sports, and it’s the second amendment. However, in recent years, violence has significantly increased in the USA because of guns. There are more cases of children and young adults engaging in violence or getting caught in the crossfire. It is shameful to say that almost every day we hear about some gun violence. Guns can be used for self-defense or sports, however they also can be used for robbing, shooting and many other violent purposes. We can get safety and reduce crime rate by banning guns. These are the reasons why guns should be banned.

Although the 2nd Amendment only contains one sentence, the interpretation of it can be misconstrued if the use of critical thought is not applied during the analysis. Supporters of gun control argue that the ambiguous language in the 2nd Amendment leads to confusion about the interpretation. That in itself warrants further discussion about rewriting the 2nd Amendment or simply eradicating it. Also, the provision is outdated and no longer coincides with the times. Gun control is one of the most debated about topic today in America; between news outlet, the public, and politicians. As some politicians look to resolve the gun control issues, with banning them, imposing more restriction to sellers, buyers and owner; some people and politicians consider the second amendment to be relic and should be removed from the constitution. History has shown us time and time again even through all the violence and chaos in the world and America, that there is a reason for the creation of the second amendment. From history of America independence in 1776 to the ratification of the bill of right in 1791 the 2nd amendment still remains relevant form it creation, to modern times, and the protection of America’s future; for the freedom of its inhabitants and citizens. The once influential 20th century thinker George Santayana once said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. Looking back into ancient history, the history of second amendment, recent and current history we can find clues that will support the relevance of the 2nd amendment. We will also define the second amendment and try to find solutions to our current problems from what our forefathers had say.

The US constitution is the blueprint of many other constitutions around the world. Our constitution is the cornerstone of many other countries bill of rights, even if they don’t follow it word for word the inspiration is clearly visible. The 2nd amendment “the right to bear arms” is something that isn’t seen in many other constitutions, and in the US there is major debate on it ranging from the interpretation, if guns should be banned, should anyone be allowed a weapon no questions asked, it goes on and on with no end in sight. I feel the 2nd amendment should be modified to include gun regulations, because other amendments were changed and updated for current times, regulations will prevent guns from ending up in hands of criminals, and regulations will not stop law abiding citizens from owning a weapon. Adding some extra words to the 2nd amendment will end debate over little things, and make all reasonable people happy.

Gun violence has been on the rise for many years and there seems to be no solution. People feel more protected with guns in their home, but actually this increases their risk to be in harm’s way of being hurt or killed because of the gun. The majority of gun ownership is owned by civilians “75 percent of the world’s 875 million guns are civilian controlled”(Gun Violence). People also feel more protected when they carry a gun on their person but this also increases their risk of being harmed “Philadelphia study found that the odds of an assault victim being shot were 4.5 times greater if he carried a gun" and that "his odds of being killed were 4.2 times greater when armed”(Gun Violence). If people knew that it increases their risk of being killed then not very many people will carry a gun around.

The Second Amendment was adopted in 1791 but over the years it is not suitable for the modern society. Big things have changed over the years since the Constitution was written, consequently, its contents do not reflect the necessary changes for the benefit of all citizens. Violence is out of control and many people are killed by guns each year. The second amendment needs to be changed because we need to ban guns and make our society safer.

While repealing the second amendment would have decreased the deaths, the criminals who are doing harm, will still find a way to commit harm with or without a firearm. It would give the criminal the advantage of knowing that the citizens do not carry guns and would lead to the criminal to conduct the crime because the citizen cannot defend himself. The problem with repealing the second amendment is that criminals would still find a way to commit the crime if the second amendment gets repealed. As shown in Criminal Victimization 2014, roughly 5.9 million violent crimes were committed in the United States during 2014 these included assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rapes, and murders. 10% were perpetrated by offenders visibly armed with a gun. This goes to show that 10% of these cases did the criminals require the use of a firearm to commit these offenses. Meaning that the criminal committing the crimes would have committed the crime with or without the firearm when only 10% of the criminals needed a gun to go through with their crime. There is controversy on the exact meaning of the Second Amendment. Making it illegal to own any type of gun would not only take away our second amendment but it would also take away people's sense of safety. People want to be able to protect themselves from dangerous situations. For example, a home invasion could end up worse if the home owners could not do anything about it. When there is a violent person trying to hurt someone it could make the situation worse if the victim was caught trying to contact the police. Even if the police were contacted, it could be to late by the time they got to the scene. If the victim had a way to protect themself, the time frame of the event could have been cut in half and everyone could have been safe. Having guns banned from public places like schools and banks make them an easier target for a criminal. They would target these places because they know that the people inside cannot protect themselves, but if firearms were permitted on the property then the intruders would

Mass shootings and suicides have become a serious occurrence from yearly to daily basis. With all these casualties, most of them were unarmed and killed by some sort of weapon. The outcomes of these events would have been different if they were carrying a gun. The possibilities of protecting themselves would be greater than if they did not. Obviously, having a legal weapon can help protect you and your love ones from a dangerous situation. Throughout history, men have been using and keeping weapons in their homes, which the 2nd Amendment claim that citizens have the right to bear arms.
