I have always lived on or around farms or some sort of agriculture. My family’s heritage is made up of small town American farmers who emigrated from Germany in the early to mid 1800s to start a new life. The farm of my fourth great-grandparents is still being used today and it still plays an important role in our agriculturally strong society. Certain regulations can hurt farmers all over the country, enacting crippling problems and expenses on farms. Over the past three summers I have worked on farms near my hometown. I have seen first hand how rules and regulations can affect a farm and the production of products that farmers use to make a living. Some of the time, farmers have it rough. The USDA defines Federal Milk Marketing Orders as “the established rules under which dairy processors purchase fresh milk from dairy farmers supplying a marketing area. The Orders are established and amended through the formal hearing process.” (USDA, 2015) The goal of the regulators is to put a current rule on the table for people to comment on and critique. The remainder of the milk that is produced is put into a reserve so if there is a sudden increase in demand, that there is enough supply. Class II products consist of other milk products such as cottage cheese and Ice Cream. Class III and IV include storable products that include milk, such as butter and dry milk. This is very important to the order program and system. Prices for these products are determined each month and each marketing order maintains its own market wide pool where price is determined under the federal milk marketing order
