I have always lived on or around farms or some sort of agriculture. My family’s heritage is made up of small town American farmers who emigrated from Germany in the early to mid 1800s to start a new life. The farm of my fourth great-grandparents is still being used today and it still plays an important role in our agriculturally strong society. Certain regulations can hurt farmers all over the country, enacting crippling problems and expenses on farms. Over the past three summers I have worked on farms near my hometown. I have seen first hand how rules and regulations can affect a farm and the production of products that farmers use to make a living. Some of the time, farmers have it rough. I have even noticed some rules that are a little …show more content…
The USDA defines Federal Milk Marketing Orders as “the established rules under which dairy processors purchase fresh milk from dairy farmers supplying a marketing area. The Orders are established and amended through the formal hearing process.” (USDA, 2015) The goal of the regulators is to put a current rule on the table for people to comment on and critique. They want people to say what they believe should Regulations.gov states the summary as, “This notice announces the Agricultural Marketing Service’s (AMS) review of the Federal Milk Marketing Orders using the criteria contained in section 610 of the Regulatory Flexibility ACT (RFA), as …show more content…
The remainder of the milk that is produced is put into a reserve so if there is a sudden increase in demand, that there is enough supply. Class II products consist of other milk products such as cottage cheese and Ice Cream. Class III and IV include storable products that include milk, such as butter and dry milk. This is very important to the order program and system. Prices for these products are determined each month and each marketing order maintains its own market wide pool where price is determined under the federal milk marketing order
Agricultural subsidies is a very complex and controversial economic topic today. It will continue to be a hot topic as government continues it. It is largely debated in the United States as well as in other countries. The reason it is so largely debated is because it literally have an effect on the entire world market. Not to mention that the farm has been booming the last 5 to 10 years. This topic also tends to draw strong opinions in our area in particular due to the large agricultural community in our region. However, even within different states there are many supporters as well as opponents to these government subsidies.
The Ontario Dairy Herd Improvement Corporation, run by general manager John Meek, aims to improve the efficiency and profitability of dairy farming through an accurate, rapid, and cost effective milk testing service. Milk testing is an essential herd management component for all dairy processors as it measures the amount, quality and contents of the dairy products. Supply management agencies limit milk production; thus, profit is maximized through acquiring premiums from quality dairy with high levels of protein and butter fat as opposed to mass production and distribution. The dairy herd is the largest source of revenue for farmers, data from milk testing helps maximize milk production as farmers
The Ontario Milk Marketing Board regulates the Ontario dairy industry (OMMB). They limit production by issuing quotas on the amount of milk that farmers can ship to local dairies. OMMB pays farmers for the amount of milk shipped and gives premiums for higher levels of protein and butterfat content.
In the late nineteenth century shortly after the Civil War and Reconstruction, farmers in the Midwestern United States found themselves in quite a predicament. During the second industrial revolution of the United States that contained mass introduction of: railroads, oil, steel, and electricity, the risk-taking entrepreneurs of this era took an adventure into the world of cutthroat capitalism. In just a little time, a handful of monopolies arose in all these industries which hurt both the consumer of the product and the producer of the material (Doc. F). Because of the corrupt politicians in Washington DC, the absence of regulation on the monopolies put into place by bribes and greed or moderation from them, and the devious ways of the
Is there a federal standard for what "organic" means when it comes to farm fresh milk?
Growing up on a small family wheat farm in southwestern Oklahoma, I have experienced the harsh conditions of farming firsthand. The job that used to employ the largest amount of people in the United States has lost the support and the respect of the American people. The Jeffersonian Ideal of a nation of farmers has been tossed aside to be replaced by a nation of white-collar workers. The family farm is under attack and it is not being protected. The family farm can help the United States economically by creating jobs in a time when many cannot afford the food in the stores. The family farm can help prevent the degradation of the environment by creating a mutually beneficial relationship between the people producing the food and nature. The family farm is the answer to many of the tough questions facing the United States today, but these small farms are going bankrupt all too often. The government’s policy on farming is the largest factor in what farms succeed, but simple economics, large corporations, and society as a whole influence the decline in family farms; small changes in these areas will help break up the huge corporate farms, keeping the small family farm afloat.
The main purpose of this lab is to identify and separate the main components of milk. To do this an understanding of the properties of these components in needed to separate them from one another. We will be separating the components with their polarity or non-polarity and the temperature at which specific components precipitate. To do this we will be using hot plates, gravity filters and vacuum filters1, water and ice baths, and blot drying.
My love for roadside stands and local farms started when I was young. If I spotted one I would always ask my parents to pull over so we could buy several of the colorful fruits and vegetables. This continued as I got older however, it did not occur to me how controversial farming is until I watched the documentary Food Inc. in high school. This documentary connected the industrial farming process, to the groceries I was consuming from the supermarket, in a way I never considered when I was younger.

Canada 's dairy sector operates under a supply management system based on planned domestic production, supervised pricing and strict controls on dairy product imports. The system was adopted for industrial milk in the early 1970s to address the unstable prices, uncertain supplies and fluctuating producers and processor revenues which were common in the 1950s and 1960s. By enforcing this system, farmers attempt to strike the most accurate balance between supply and demand of dairy products (Canadian Dairy Commission, 2010).
The agriculture field is one of the biggest employers, employing over 155 million people in the United States. What do you think about when you hear the word “agriculture?” Many people would say farming, but this is not the most common occupation in this field. Farmers make up a fraction of the agricultural jobs at 900,000, but over 2.1 million people own, rent, and claim farming as a primary source of income. The average farm size has dropped from 460 acres in 1990 to 418 acres in 2007, while the average age of this occupation rose to 57, making this one of the older workforces in the United States.
* Considering the nature and storage limitation of milk the consumer attitude towards milk was wobbly and strong reasons to change the attitude were required.
