The definition of critical thinking is transferring and applying knowledge and skills in a new situation. The critical thinking is needed in a lot of aspects of the nurses’ job such as when the nurses need to provide the precise identification in the specific problems had by the patients. They need to be in detail and also critical to themselves in every time in order to be able to provide identification precisely. When you have the profession in nursing, it is important to be critical thinker. The nurses have the high responsibilities and their responsibilities are increasing from time to time.

Hello Students, my name is Teresa Damien MS, APRN-BC. I have been a registered nurse for over a decade and currently practice as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at an academic institution clinically focused in addiction psychiatry. I have worked in multiple areas of nursing over my career prior to mental health that include medical-surgical nursing, respiratory nursing, hospice nursing, home care pedicatric nursing, and nursing education.

As I near the finish with my journey with Aspen, I realize what I have achieved. I have improved my decision-making skills, attained knowledge in leadership and managerial skills. Also, I have improved my communication skills for leadership positions, increased knowledge in the organizations functioning, and increased knowledge in quality. Therefore, we will review some of the areas, which my goals were achieved.

Nurses make decisions daily while preparing and conveying care in their scope of practice. Appropriate and efficacious decision-making includes critical thinking. Critical thinking is a major component in the nursing profession as an essential nursing skill. Critical thinking is examining underlying assumptions, interpreting and evaluating arguments, imagining and exploring alternatives, and developing reflective criticism for the purpose of reaching a reasoned, justifiable conclusion (Sullivan, 2013, p. 100). Additionally, it is also the root of problem solving.

In this paper I will explore the elements of nursing theory and how I believe they are all tied together. I believe that a man’s health will be directly affected by his environment and his nursing care.

I can remember serving in the Air Force as a nurse and working with the chief of nursing. During my training period, things just seemed so difficult and hard for me to grasp under such a stressful environment. The chief of medical was very detail oriented and she would always pushed us to think outside of the box. We would go through different mock code scenarios as if we were out in the battlefield for two weeks. If we did not respond to the level of her expectations, she would make us redo the mock code scenario over again. There were many days in which we felt frustrated, giving up and crying. In the end, we realized that the chief of nursing was just trying to build our character, instill confidence and prepare us for future of being in a war zone.

Even in management, critical thinking is essential to having an effective organization. “Nurse managers who are adept at using critical thinking and have the “habits of mind” of a critical thinker are in a good position to assume a leadership role and create the changes that will achieve positive outcomes in health care organizations” (Zori, & Morrison, 2009 p.79).

The national league for nurses defines critical thinking in the nursing process as “a discipline specific, reflective reasoning process that guides a nurse in generating, implementing, and evaluating approaches for dealing with client care and professional concerns” (Kozier, 2008). This definition is imperative to help a nursing student learn how to think in terms of nursing care. Nursing students must achieve a comprehensive understanding of critical thinking in order to understand the nursing process. The purpose for this paper is for nursing students to learn how to use the nursing process, how to properly document their findings and assessments, and correctly implement APA formatting in a formal paper.

Critical thinking refers to the ability to think rationally and clearly. It enables one be able to think well and be able to solve problems in a systematic manner. It also plays a role in evaluating ideas and acts as a tool for self evaluation. In nursing, critical thinking for clinical decision making refers to the process of thinking in a logical and systematic manner. Critical thinking used throughout the nation in nursing everyday to protect and treat patients in the most effective way. An example would be if a patient walked in to the hospital with a platelet count of 1, the nurse would know that they have a risk for bleeding and would place them on “risk for bleeding” protocols. Without critical thinking, the nurse would not know what to do. Critical thinking is a learned skill that every nurse should acquire, not only during his or her education, but also throughout his or her career.

Critical thinking skills in nursing are very important and need to be a part of a nurse’s everyday routine according to Ericksen (2017). To become a nurse, one must learn practical skills in nursing school, like taking vitals, cleaning and dressing a cut, or administering medications with injections. But this is not sufficient for a nurse to be able to do their job successfully. A nurse must have the ability to think critically as well. Although there are some critical thinking pitfalls to acknowledge in order to identify why critical thinking is not used every day.

The nursing profession has been around for a very long time. Through many changes and reforms, it has drastically evolved into the nursing profession we have today. Nurses have an important role within the healthcare industry in the treatment and medical care of the sick. These trusted healthcare professionals continue to make up the largest majority of the healthcare field, as well as the fastest growing occupation. Nursing is a job that allows people to not only care for the sick but also to experience, learn and further their interest in the human body. This course has definitely provided me an insight to the roots of the profession I would like to pursue. I think it is important to know the history of nursing to understand fully on the problems that are affecting the profession. I believe that we cannot effectively address important issues without a foundation of historical knowledge. In other words, by examining the nursing history, I will be able to appreciate my important role as a nurse in the healthcare system. The topics I will be including in my reflection are the works of Florence Nightingale, the affects of World War II, the challenges of Filipinos aspiring to be nurses, and excerpts in Chapter 10 of “A History of American Nursing.”
