Nurses probably hear about critical thinking on the first day of a nursing school program. In fact, nurses are encouraged to use critical thinking to solve daily tasks and problems (Bridget, 2014). After carefully reviewing the Critical thinking Wheel I discovered a few weakness of my critical thinking. The most important one is understanding my point of view. I sometimes fail to recognize another way to look at a situation or a problem. Instead, I focus on trying to prove to others and myself the relevance and reasoning behind my point of view. This approach limits the possible outcomes to problem or task. A good leader should be open to alternative solutions and ideas in order to facilitate the best outcome.
The co-operative nursing assignment has given me the opportunity to use my critical thinking, decision-making, leadership, and clinical nursing expertise learned throughout the RN-BSN program. “The fostering of critical thinking as one of the terminal learning goals of nursing education based on the idea that critical thinking is important not only in the nursing workplace, but also in nursing education” (Shin, Jung, Shin & Kim, 2006, p. 233). My
In this paper I will explore the elements of nursing theory and how I believe they are all tied together. I believe that a man’s health will be directly affected by his environment and his nursing care.
Critical thinking is a nursing process that includes reflective practice, problem solving and decision making which are connected to one another. The definition of critical thinking is transferring and applying knowledge and skills in a new situation. The critical thinking is needed in a lot of aspects of the nurses’ job such as when the nurses need to provide the precise identification in the specific problems had by the patients. They need to be in detail and also critical to themselves in every time in order to be able to provide identification precisely. When you have the profession in nursing, it is important to be critical thinker. The nurses have the high responsibilities and their responsibilities are increasing from time to time.
Critical thinking refers to the ability to think rationally and clearly. It enables one be able to think well and be able to solve problems in a systematic manner. It also plays a role in evaluating ideas and acts as a tool for self evaluation. In nursing, critical thinking for clinical decision making refers to the process of thinking in a logical and systematic manner. Nursing practitioners who are critical thinkers strive to be clear, accurate, significant, precise and logic when carrying out their daily activities ADDIN EN.CITE Mateo2009451(Mateo & Kirchhoff, 2009)4514516Mateo, M. Critical thinking in nursing involves some elements of thought. It involves being able to figure out a problem, issue or views of somebody else. The goal of thinking is to figure out what one hopes to accomplish ADDIN EN.CITE Sheridan19841096(Sheridan, Vredenburgh, & Abelson, 1984)1096109617Sheridan, John E.Vredenburgh, Donald J.Abelson, Michael A.Contextual Model of Leadership Influence in Hospital UnitsThe Academy of Management JournalThe Academy of Management Journal57-782711984Academy of Management00014273http://www.jstor.org/stable/255957( HYPERLINK l "_ENREF_7" o "Sheridan, 1984 #1096" Sheridan, Vredenburgh, & Abelson, 1984). Nurses make decisions daily while preparing and conveying care in their scope of practice. Appropriate and efficacious decision-making includes critical thinking. Critical thinking is a major component in the nursing profession as an essential nursing skill. Critical thinking is examining underlying assumptions, interpreting and evaluating arguments, imagining and exploring alternatives, and developing reflective criticism for the purpose of reaching a reasoned, justifiable conclusion (Sullivan, 2013, p. 100). Additionally, it is also the root of problem solving.
In this paper, I am going to discuss past and present nursing concepts, and how these theories have evolved. The initial paper by J. Fawcett (1984) describes the fundamental concepts of nursing including person, environment, health and nursing, (Fawcett, 1984 p.84) The author further describes ideas that are discussed and compared by various nursing scholars and how they are related to one another. In the second paper by Newman, Smith, et al, (2008) they explore the current theories and how more advanced these are, and where the studies are in their scholarly journey. The authors describe the “history of nursing epistemology” (Newman, et all 2008) and the phases that have been part of its journey of development. The initial article is very limited, and focuses particularly on nursing systems. It does not allow for expansion and growth for nursing theory. Dr. Fawcett does, however, establish the basis for nursing theory and organizes the process through her four basic areas of concepts (Brodie, 1984). The latter article envelops the growth and development of nursing theory towards “Unitary-transformative (UT) paradigm” (Newman et al, 2008). The concepts evolve and establish the process of holistic thinking, and viewing the person as a whole in your assessment. I will also include personal reflection from my own nursing practice and how these concepts
Critical thinking used throughout the nation in nursing everyday to protect and treat patients in the most effective way. An example would be if a patient walked in to the hospital with a platelet count of 1, the nurse would know that they have a risk for bleeding and would place them on “risk for bleeding” protocols. Without critical thinking, the nurse would not know what to do. Critical thinking is a learned skill that every nurse should acquire, not only during his or her education, but also throughout his or her career.
The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon my original definition of nursing metaparadigm concepts critically, and to determine if any changes in my perception towards practice have occurred. The focus of the paper is to critically analyze the transformations that have occurred in my approach to practice. The critical analysis of nursing metaparadigm concepts has resulted in the transformation of my thinking regarding a person, nursing, and environment while my perception regarding the health remains same. Firstly, I discovered the importance of the concept of development in the definition of a person. Secondly, I learned that nursing care should be flexible and should move around the person and their
The national league for nurses defines critical thinking in the nursing process as “a discipline specific, reflective reasoning process that guides a nurse in generating, implementing, and evaluating approaches for dealing with client care and professional concerns” (Kozier, 2008). This definition is imperative to help a nursing student learn how to think in terms of nursing care. Nursing students must achieve a comprehensive understanding of critical thinking in order to understand the nursing process. The purpose for this paper is for nursing students to learn how to use the nursing process, how to properly document their findings and assessments, and correctly implement APA formatting in a formal paper.
Even in management, critical thinking is essential to having an effective organization. “Nurse managers who are adept at using critical thinking and have the “habits of mind” of a critical thinker are in a good position to assume a leadership role and create the changes that will achieve positive outcomes in health care organizations” (Zori, & Morrison, 2009 p.79).
Critical thinking skills in nursing are very important and need to be a part of a nurse’s everyday routine according to Ericksen (2017). To become a nurse, one must learn practical skills in nursing school, like taking vitals, cleaning and dressing a cut, or administering medications with injections. But this is not sufficient for a nurse to be able to do their job successfully. A nurse must have the ability to think critically as well. Although there are some critical thinking pitfalls to acknowledge in order to identify why critical thinking is not used every day.
Critical thinking skills, decision-making and problem-solving are attributes that nurses must have in today's healthcare environment. Strategies such as the use of nursing theories are sometimes implemented in education of nurses (Oldenburg & Hung, 2010). When examining the decision making and problem solving utilization within nursing theories, the reason behind
The nursing profession has been around for a very long time. Through many changes and reforms, it has drastically evolved into the nursing profession we have today. Nurses have an important role within the healthcare industry in the treatment and medical care of the sick. These trusted healthcare professionals continue to make up the largest majority of the healthcare field, as well as the fastest growing occupation. Nursing is a job that allows people to not only care for the sick but also to experience, learn and further their interest in the human body. This course has definitely provided me an insight to the roots of the profession I would like to pursue. I think it is important to know the history of nursing to understand fully on the problems that are affecting the profession. I believe that we cannot effectively address important issues without a foundation of historical knowledge. In other words, by examining the nursing history, I will be able to appreciate my important role as a nurse in the healthcare system. The topics I will be including in my reflection are the works of Florence Nightingale, the affects of World War II, the challenges of Filipinos aspiring to be nurses, and excerpts in Chapter 10 of “A History of American Nursing.”
The nursing theory that reflects my own thinking is Newman’s theory of health as an expanding consciousness. This theory recognizes that the patients have different histories, experiences, goals and life journeys (Bateman & Merryfeather, 2014). The nurse needs to incorporate this into his or her practice in order to provide the patient with a safe environment and the highest quality of care possible (Bateman & Merryfeather, 2014). Newman’s theory discussed how order and disorder it is a part of life and a part of expanding a person’s consciousness (Endo, 2016). This theory does not work if the patient and the nurse are not on the same page and have a good nurse to patient relationship (Bateman & Merryfeather, 2014).
In nursing, it is important to remember the past pioneer women who paved the road for today’s nurses. Nurses before the mid-nineteenth century required no skills or training, in fact; the tasks they performed were neither tested or used uniformly in practice (Alligood, 2014). Becoming a nurse was viewed for being only suitable for women who were ugly, poor and unmarriable (Joel, 2006). Through the year’s nurses realized the importance of education and research and establishing guides for future nurses. Nurse theorists conducted research and created conceptual theoretical frameworks that stand as a foundation for current nursing practices (Alligood, 2014).
