Jacques-Louis David is an artist that I can really relate too. Unlike some artists, I am able to see the messages in David’s paintings. I respect the fact he over came adversity with his speak impediment and was able to have the courage to stand up for his beliefs and rise to become a respected member of society. His paintings were a part of the French Revolution. Some people avoid adversity, David thrived on it. The first painting that stood out to me, and the rest of the world, was his painting Oath of the Horatii. It was a very political piece that many could relate too. Even if art is not one of your passions, you can immediately see his message. The soldiers are volunteering for their country. You can see their strength and loyalty in
In 19th century France, the Neoclassical art style arose, influenced by the classical artistic style of Greco-Roman society. Around this time, France encountered many political, social and economic changes brought up mostly by the lower class French citizens. Jacques-Louis David was a highly influential Neoclassical artist during this time. Commissioned by both Nobles and lower class citizens of France, he created artworks such as the Oath of the Horatii (image 1), the Death of Marat (image 2), and Napoleon Crossing the Alps (image 3). David's art represented the ideas of thinkers of that time rather than just the ideals of that time. The purpose of David's art was to gain the support of French citizens through artistic propaganda in order
Paintings are different than books or movies because they allow you to create your own thoughts and interpretations rather than telling you what you should think. This allows creative and different takes on an original piece of art.The Surrender, a painting by Joseph Griffith, was published in October of 2006. It features two sides in what appears to be a war. The left side is occupied by the epitome of American icons and showcases the American flag, while the left side contains, not only enemies of America, but “bad guys” from classic movies surrendering with a white flag. This painting can be interpreted as labeling popular American icons as heroes, showing the change in society’s change in what they consider a role model.
An artist's job is to interpret, and express the aspects of life in a creative fashion. War has played a big part in shaping our human history, and many artists have portrayed their feelings about art through paintings, and even monuments. Whether it be to show; the joy of victory, the sorrow of defeat, or to educate the public on the gory realities of war. Art about war can also show us a great amount of history of the kinds of weapons that were used at the time. It is necessary for artists to interpret, and criticize all aspects of life; even ones as tragic as war, It can make the public more aware of what goes on in times of war.
The Painting I chose is called “Mixtec Culture.” And it was painted by Diego Rivera in 1942, Mexico. It’s a Fresco style painting, which is “a wall painting technique that has been used for large scale murals since ancient times” (Getlein 159). This entire painting is an homage to the culture of Mexico, specifically the Mixtec people, and that’s what I love about it. The Mixtec people were renowned for their artwork so it’s fitting that Rivera depicts a peaceful community of artists such as mask and jewelry makers. This painting celebrates the artistic culture of the Mixtec people and that theme is directly linked to the political influences of the time, “Mexican government commissioned artists to create murals about Mexico itself- the glories
Compare and contrast these two works using formal analysis and your critical thinking skills. Begin by identifying each work fully, including the title, artist (if known), period or style, date, and location, if applicable. In your comparison, provide a thesis statement or brief introduction. Be certain to address the formal elements of each work (e.g., composition, treatment of figure and space, and use of line and color), the materials and techniques used, the functions of the works, and how they relate to each other. Do not discuss each work in isolation, but rather, provide a developed comparative analysis that considers any relevant social, political, religious, and economic contexts.
I’ve always admired it because it looks so real. My other favorite is “Starry Night” because of how he painted everything in it. I love the outlines around the moon and stars. It really adds to the painting. Some paintings by him I didn’t like were ‘Lane in Autumn” and “Cart with Black Ox” because the colors are dreary and they make me feel sort of sad, not happy like the paintings with the bright colors. I really think “Lanes in Autumn” should’ve had more colors since it’s fall. Overall I love most of his paintings and I think they should’ve been shown to the public’s eyes
In the scope of this paper two works of art would be compared and contrasted - David’s Oath of the Horatii and Painting of Giovanni Arnolfini and His Bride by Van Eyck.
One of the pieces that I found to be the most moving was Frederic Edwin Church's "Our Banner in the Sky", which was painted during the war's outset in 1861. This is one of the pieces in which the enthusiasm for the war was quite clearly seen. In this work, the
The artistic style known as, neoclassical art was mainly the European art movement during the late 18th and early 19th century. Neoclassical art was mostly inspired by the classical arts from ancient Rome and Greece. Neoclassical painting and sculptures were serious and unemotional. Neoclassical painting showed use of dark and dull colors using brilliant highlights to show depths of self-sacrifice. The story behind, the Oath of the Horatii, came from a roman legend.
The piece of art that I found the most moving was Vietnamese Girl Kim Phuc Running after Napalm Attack, by Nick Ut. This photograph was taken June 8th, 1972 right after the napalm attack. What drew me to this picture was the pure look of terror in the nude girls face, how starved and tortured she looks, and her being so young to have such a look of crisis. The bleak and draining white and grey scale of the photograph drew me in as well, emphasizing the torturous time these children were going through after such an attack. This piece was powerful for me because I have never felt the terror I imagine/it looks like these children are going through. This picture made me reflect on such emotions I never hope to feel myself.
The piece of art that struck me the most was the soviet song "Wide is the Motherland." The song itself is soaring and incites a feeling
Toulouse’s art inspires me to paint in a similar fashion, how he can get so much across with such a simple painting. The reason for choosing him was that La Toilette captured me, it is such a beautiful painting but it so simple. It doesn’t show the face of the model and only use blue as its main colour but it still gets something across the viewer. That is what inspires me, that even though he painted in such a simple way, he still communicated his messages and meanings easily.
Jacques-Louis David was a Neo-classical artist in 18th Century France. He painted in this serious style as a direct reaction against the accepted Rococo art era. Whilst the Rococo era was shallow and frivolous in subject matter (see The Swing, right), David’s paintings focused strongly on ideas of sacrifice and duty. But why would he work in this way? It was because David had a clear purpose for his art. He was a strong Republican who longed for the day when France would overthrow the gluttonous,

He was not content with simply painting images; rather, he utilized his artistic abilities as way of expressing his realistic approach and imparted messages to the mankind through use of strong and creative symbols. (About Library and Essays | sadequainfoundation)
