OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT
What do you consider the roles and responsibilities of workers to be in developing and implementing successful safety programs?
When implementing and developing successful safety programs in the workplace, I feel that the workers have many roles and responsibilities. These include:
* Proper use and maintaining of safety equipment/clothes in the workplace: When workers go to work, they expect to come home in the same condition they went, except for being tired maybe. By ensuring that workers are properly protecting them from whatever

Other tasks that the JHSC is responsible for include: * Maintenance of records in regarding to hazards documented in the workplace, injury records, ensuring that they are fully investigated and that there is no further harm in those situations. * Consult with professional and technical experts, regarding workplace safety, and learning new techniques that can be applied to the workplace. * They take their findings or sanctions back to the management for discussion and actions to resolve. (Unknown, 2010)
The JHSC must regularly meet (monthly) to discuss health and safety related matters, as well as make decisions in crucial and difficult moments (ex. worker’s refusal to work, etc.) The members within are highly trained and experienced with the policies of the organization, while being certified with additional workplace hazard training to recognize and control hazards within their workplace.

1.4 Identify the lines of responsibility and reporting for health and safety in the setting
I ensure staff are kept safe within their day to day work by ensuring that they work to Health and Safety Law and Legislation and that this is kept up to date. I ensure risk assessments are in place and reviewed regularly for any changes or updates. I ensure staff are all treated equally and are given the same choices.
Training should be given in such a way that hazardous situations can be avoided. For example: Lengthening of working day, removal of taking screening breaks etc for meeting deadlines should be avoided. You must ensure that the significant hazards are identified, and that the actual working practices are addressed and if need be, changed so as to reduce any risk. This is both the responsibility of the employer and employee, for example it is the employees responsibility to familiarise themselves with the hazards and risks in their workplace.
The management committee chairperson carries out a full investigation taking written statements from all the staff present at the time, or who were on the outing
• Provide and maintain a safe working environment by the use of safe systems of work
Also to avoid dangerous moving and handling, the employees then have the responsibility of making sure they use all equipment as they have been trained to do so, follow all health and safety working practices within their workplace, avoid putting themselves, other staff, individuals or visitors at risk, and making sure they report any hazards or risks to their employer.
As an employer, you need to be aware of the processes and duties produced in these regulations and the practical implications imposed. There is also a duty to involve employees in all health and safety
1.2 Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), often referred to as the "OSH Act," was enacted in 1970 by President Richard M. Nixon. Its purpose is to assure safe and healthful working conditions for men and women (EPA, 2006). The Act is administered and enforced at the national level by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a division of the US Department of Labor. The application of the OSH Act in the current employment climate will be discussed as it applies to a variety of industries; considerations that are most applicable to the specific type of industry will be discussed initially, and those that are equally important regardless of the type of business will complete the section. Finally, this paper will discuss how the
This responsibility motivates the HR department and managers to implement stringent policies to prevent work-related injuries to avoid paying for higher workers’ compensation insurance. Moreover, it inspires the company to promote safety by organizing a safety committee to address hazards in the workplace to prevent injuries or deaths. The committee solicits employee suggestions and participation to increase compliance to company policies. It also develops various safety programs to promote employee wellness to improve their quality of life (Gomez-Mejia, et al, 2010).
