The Greek play, Oedipus the King, shows how easy it is for a man to fall apart, while trying to make things right. Sophocles’ tragedy tells the story of Oedipus, a regular man turned king of Thebes. Throughout the tragedy, Oedipus searches for the cause of the chaos and havoc encompassing his land; however, he discovers that he is the one responsible for the hardships plaguing Thebes. As the tragedy continues, Sophocles’ exposes a dark side to power, fame, and ambition. Further, Sophocles’ exposes the fear that many have of the truth, and exposes the grave danger in hiding from it.

Oedipus uses another defense mechanism to keep himself blind from the truth in his argument with Creon where Oedipus tries to exile him from Thebes. Creon attempts to reason with Oedipus, but Oedipus doesn’t seem to be willing to listen. After being told that he will be exiled from the land, Creon says, “What if you’re wholly wrong?” (701). Oedipus replies with, “No matter--I must rule” (702). At this point in the play, Oedipus is willing to exile a member of his family just to keep himself from the truth. In Oedipus’ mind, pushing Creon, the man who first revealed the prophecy to him out of Thebes will help to make the problems he is facing go away, it makes him feel safer if Creon is a liar. If Creon is lying, then all of the fears Oedipus has about killing Laius will cease to exist. Oedipus pushing away Creon is a defense mechanism, if Creon is trying to overthrow Oedipus, then nothing he says can be taken as a fact. Oedipus willingness to exile Creon is a direct result of his inability to handle hard truths, which shows how dangerous this ignorance is to the people of Thebes. Oedipus’ enlarged ego causes him to make irrational, rageful, and out of nowhere claims that lead to the harm of others.
