Online College Is The Future

Education has long been the frontier for society and academic advancement in one’s life. Long gone are the days where only a handful of people were expected to enter into college and earn a degree. In 2014, there are so many colleges and universities that one can choose from. Not only is the choice, whether or not they attend school, but the choice is, whether they want to attend school online or in a traditional college setting of brick and mortar.

In recent years, more colleges and universities offer online courses and admit them to be a formal program. This is a good phenomenon for operation of schools since it makes students have more options. Online courses provide more convenience and flexibility to different kinds of requirements, and create more potential possibilities for courses development and design. Therefore, colleges and universities should offer degrees entirely online.

Online courses have become more common among colleges and universities. About thirty percent of all college and university students are enrolled in at least one online course (Bergstrand, Savage, 2013). Online classes provide flexibly for students, allowing them to work more hours or care for their families. Studies have found that there is no drastic difference in student achievement whether they are enrolled in traditional classes or online classes (Bergstrand,2013). This article will analyze the experience of taking an online class as a student and will provide information from a sociological perspective.

In today’s world and society there are many ways to be educated. Education has become very popular to people who want to succeed and become something better in life. Sometimes life gets in the way and people decide to hold off on school and when they do decide to start they have the advantage to decide whether taking online classes or traditional classes on campus is best for them. High school graduates are immediately going out getting jobs and adult students are returning to school to earn a degree to better their current job prospects or make a complete career change. Although the education may be the same there are a few differences and similarities between time management, self-discipline and participations while attending online and traditional school.

Many people think going back to college and complete their studies. Also there are professionals who require more online colleges degrees, diplomas and certificates in order to have an edge over others. But not many can fulfill their dreams because studying in a traditional college is time consuming and one can't study in a conventional school if he is a working man. Online colleges provide such people an opportunity to pursue their studies without taking long leaves from their work. There are numerous online colleges where you can get enrolled and earn online colleges degrees.

The individuals who are searching for prevalent scholastic and profession points of interest however are regularly limited by their absence of vitality, exertion and resources can now consider the numerous favorable circumstances of online college degrees. Being an online student is never a easy task in today’s time because there are so many distractions in our homes. If it’s not the TV blaring in the background, then it is the cell phone ringing; it’s the many notifications appearing everywhere, and most importantly simply just everyday life problems. This has to be the biggest weakness I have learned about being an online student. However this is something I have learned how to overcome in the last two years, because without online classes I would be forced to move away from my job and family to earn a degree. The Cumberland’s however has made the process of earing my degree very easy, and after completing OREN 120 I am even more prepared for completing my Human Service degree here at UC. This class has shown me how to navigate through many of the recourses, which are available at UC. The next thing I have learned is how the layout of the class here at UC operates, and what is expected from each student. The next thing this class showed me was that I have chosen the correct degree program because of the career assessment test that was taken earlier in the semester. Finally after completing this class I now know the path I need to take to reach the career I plan to have once I have graduated with my bachelor’s degree, and my master’s degree from University of the Cumberland’s.

The Internet has dramatically changed the world today as much as the Industrial Revolution changed the world two centuries ago. It revolutionized many fields such as education. Many educational institutions offer online courses providing time, distance, and place advantages for learners who work full time or live miles away from their schools. Rachel Farhi, an editor of The Daily Cougar, in her article “Online education innovators should be wary,” states that distance learning classes give students from disadvantaged areas opportunities to learn knowledge through reducing the cost. On the other hand, online courses bring some disadvantages, such as no social interaction, academic dishonesty, and procrastination. David Smith, an editor of The Daily Nebraskan, in his article “Reliance on online materials hinders learning potential for students,” claims that web-based learning cannot be a substitute for on-campus classes because e-learning decreases students’ learning pressure and motivation. Once students have less pressure to study, their academic performance may be negatively influenced. It is more likely that online education decreases students’ learning effectiveness and quality, even though it provides convenience and cost efficiency for them. After reading the two articles, I do not think that online education is as good as traditional education. Smith is absolutely right that online education is not as effective as regular classroom

Students who are prone to procrastination will have a difficult time adjusting to online classes. Hours of work are necessary to get through all of the materials, including course lectures, educational videos, assignments, projects, assigned textbook reading and discussions. For students who are getting an online degree, especially an online master’s degree, require a greater amount of work.

Technology is changing every aspect in our lives, even the way we learn. Online classes are a rapidly growing trend it today’s society. Online classes are a cost-effective substitute for traditional courses and more convenient for many, so more schools and universities are offering this option. Due to the increase in online course enrollment, people are questioning if students truly learn something from online classes because it’s not a traditional learning environment. Online classes are just, if not more, effective as traditional classes because grades have increased and online discussions provide students with the chance to interact through networking while earning a degree for less than what it would cost to enroll at the same university.

Having finished my vocational training through a local community college, adjusting to my new job, and having a surplus of free time on my hands, I decided to continue my education. So many options were available, but not all of them were viable. Working shift work in the high stress environment of pre-hospital emergency medicine left me with an odd schedule that did not line up well with attending traditional universities. As I began to explore my options, the idea of earning an online degree seemed the most likely path to follow. I was skeptical at first, because I did not hold online learning in a high regard. I began to navigate my reasoning for these ideas, as I did not entirely understand why I thought this. As I began to research online degree opportunities and speak with others regarding my future goals, I realized that others were skeptical about online learning as well. Some did not think that they had the drive to independently study adequately in an online setting. Others viewed online universities as scams, and told me that I would just be wasting my money. After doing some independent research on the topic and testing the waters myself by enrolling at Northwestern State University, I have concluded that online learning can be quite effective. There is a reasonable stigma that exists towards online degree programs, however online learning can effectively educate future students and prepare them for what lies ahead.

Online learning is a modern time invention that was necessitated by the need from the many people who finance education for their own benefit, the working class, the international students and the marginalized class. With online education, one is able to learn more conveniently and undertake other responsibilities with ease (Coates et al 4-7). One does not have to hurry to attend classes since online classes can be conducted from the convenience of home or any other location. Students take online courses for many different reasons. Those students are usually older, have more hours at work, and need to commute long distance in order to take a class on campus (Huh, Jin, Lee, & Yoo, 2009). Also for some students it is convenient since it may be hard to handle family responsibilities and attend traditional classes at the same time. Thus online classes are a good way to work the education into their busy schedules (Brown, 2012). In other cases students perceive online courses to be easier than traditional ones due to more learning enriching environment in the traditional courses. Despite the many doubts, online education has gained popularity for valid reasons. An article from the “Arizona Republic’s” Valley and State section discusses why Arizona schools are putting more classes online. They wrote how students enjoy being able to complete work on their own time, earn college credit for certain classes, as well as taking classes that aren’t available at a typical high school along with being able to fit classes into their schedule that they could not before (Arizona Republic). Online learning will not only expand what students learn, but will also bring a number of positive changes in the way students are taught. Courses online have changed everyone’s look at learning all over the world. It allows more opportunities for observers to learn online rather than learning in class.
