Operation Paperclip’s Modern Effects It was the middle of the 20th century, the world was in disorder yet peace as it did its best to recover from World War II. Nations from both sides of what is still considered one of the greatest outbreaks of war in history were not only competing in the air, in the sea, and on land, but also in the field of science. After the war, America made an astutely tactful choice: they took the German scientists for employment in the states. The outcome of this tactic included not only the advantages America saw in the recovery from the war, but also those which have evolved and advanced into many scientific advancements we see today; some of these include the Saturn V rocket, which made the success of the Apollo 11 mission possible. This event, Operation Paperclip, as it was called, was not the only paramount occurrence leading to the success of America’s scientific field, however. The Manhattan Project also led to things we still see today, such as the still-tense subject of nuclear weapons and the aptly following Nuclear Proliferation Act. Simply put, Operation Paperclip and other related events paved the way for many scientific advancements still seen today, and it established the method of working internationally to achieve great things. Even before the outbreak of War, the United States was concerned with a fascist regime in Europe researching in nuclear weapons. In retaliation, the United States began to fund an atomic weapon development program which became known as “The Manhattan Project” led by J. Robert Oppenheimer. Over the next several years, the Manhattan project started obtaining key materials such as Uranium-235 and Plutonium and testing prototypes until they reached a working model (Coroner).
It was dubbed The Manhattan Project and consisted of some of the most brilliant physicists at the time such as Albert Einstein. Then, in 1945 arguably the most powerful and controversial technology was developed. This was the nuclear bomb and it completely changed the world forever. This weapon could be used to decimate entire cities and the only time it was ever used during any conflict was in 1945 (Shalett, n.d.). On August 2, 1938, in the heat of World War II, Albert Einstein, a physicist born in Germany, sent a letter to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States. When war broke out, there was no way the world could possibly know the severity it would have taken on the people of the world. Fortunately one country saw and understood that Germany and its allies would have to be stopped. America’s Involvement in World War II not only contributed in the downfall of the insane Adolph Hitler and his Third Reich, but also came at the best time and moment. If the United States entered the war any earlier the consequences would probably have been worse.
After the World War-II ended, all major countries were looking to recruit German scientist. The USA operation was called Paperclip and it consisted of recruiting German scientist, engineers and technicians and giving them employment. The objective of this operation was to prevent Soviet Union and UK from getting their hands on German expertise and knowledge. Furthermore, they also wanted to stop Germany from rebuilding their military research capabilities. However, Truman clearly stated the exclusion of members of Nazi party or supporter of Nazi military.
As the war took its toll on the economy, the British position evolved through 1942 and 1943 to one of full support for the American project with the realization that Britain's major effort would come after the war. While the British program was sharply reduced at home, approximately 50 scientists and engineers went to the United States at the end of 1943 and during 1944 to work on various aspects of the Manhattan Project. The valuable knowledge and experience they acquired sped the development of the British bomb after 1945.
