Where did the animosity which lead to the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001 originate? It is obvious at this point in time that the leader of the al Qaeda network, Osama bin Laden, was the mastermind behind the attacks, but the reasons why the attacks occurred and the fact that a small majority of people can support such acts remains very unclear. Even Osama bin Laden recognized the potential dangers that Saddam Hussein could arise in the region. Peter Bergen quoted Osama bin Laden saying “ A year before Hussein entered Kuwait” he recalled “I said many times in my speeches at mosques warning that Saddam will enter the Gulf. No one believed me.”
In Osama bin Laden’s second fact he refers to the United States as wanting to create havoc in the Middle East even after the end of the Gulf War although they claim to be against this. He also believes that the only purpose for the fighting in the first place was to create devastation. As previously mentioned he recognized Saddam Hussein as a threat thus he must recognize the importance of limiting his global power.
