Our Declining Oceans

Our Declining Oceans Our oceans have Declined drastically because of human related factors. Overfishing has caused several species to become endangered, almost to the point of extinction. The continuous fishing of certain species drastically reduces populations and affects more than just the hunted fish. The use of destructive fishing practices has also hurt the environment. Pollution is killing plants and animals alike. More importantly the coral reefs are being bleached and are unable to recover and are dying. Farming and industrial chemicals are promoting the growth of harmful algae that hurt not only people around the site, but the organisms like fish and plants living in the waters nearby. Climate change contributes to many of the problems …show more content…

is also a very destructive way to fish. The most commonly used chemical to kill or stun fish is cyanide. Cyanide is used primarily to catch reef fish for aquariums, but using cyanide is very harmful and deadly. Divers go down and spray fish with the poison and the fish loses balance and most respiratory functions. Many of the fish die at the spot of application and many more die when being transferred to stores to be sold.
The last major contributor to destructive fishing is ghost fishing. Ghost fishing is more careless than actual fishing. In this method boats abandon, sometimes on purpose, nets and lines in the ocean and fish and other marine life swim into the nets and become stuck. The animals die once they cannot breathe and or? become exhausted trying to break free form the net. The damage caused from ghost fishing has been amplified because of the increase in fishing vessels across the world. The abandonment of nets is considered a considered a type of pollution as well as a fishing …show more content…

When a small creature gets contaminated by pollution anything that eats that animal also is affected. The affect of pollution affects the food chain greatly. For example, if a single krill has toxins in it and is then eaten by a fish the toxins in the krill are transferred to the fish. When a fish is eaten the toxins still continue to travel up the food chain.
Global warming has influenced the ocean more than anything else has in the world. The two largest changes happening in the ocean are the rising water levels and the rising temperature. Both of these factors have arrived because of an increase in greenhouse gases and an overall rise in temperature across the globe. The most common greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, comes mainly from the exhaust of cars and trucks. Our actions are affecting the oceans and seas more than ever before. According to NASA’s Global Climate Change website, sea level has risen about 85 millimeters since 1993. This rise is quite substantial because a large portion of the population lives at or below sea level. This rise in sea level also hurts several kinds of marine animals such as turtles and seals. These animals require beaches to mate and nest. Without the required amount of beaches many species will go extinct. The rise in sea level was caused because melting sea ice and the expansion of warmer waters stemming from an increase in air temperature.
