In 2003, Together with fellow classmates we formed an Activism group, bearing our high school name. With a plethora of issues to confront, we reached consensus on increasing school funding, focusing on the C.F.E (Campaign for Fiscal Equity), a lawsuit that would mandate N.Y state to deliver, a much needed, $9.2 billion in capital funding to public schools. This book has influence me and is the reason why I decided to leave my comfort zone in the first place. This book is about the court cases that came after Brown v. Board of education that nullified the original decision. After reading this book I came to my social studies teacher and said “something has to be done”. He then forwarded me some information about other injustices occurring in our school system and some activist groups that were doing something about it.

The Brown v. Board ruling declared segregation in schools unconstitutional, therefore promoting integration. Many viewed this as a turning point, the start of a social revolution. However, there is a view that, although positive, the ruling did not do enough to force real change. It is even possible to argue that it increased white opposition, actually hindering the case of Civil Rights. Overall, however, the positive aspects outweighed the negatives, with the psychological effect and legal backing from the court being most important.

The case of brown v. board of education was one of the biggest turning points for African Americans to becoming accepted into white society at the time. Brown vs. Board of education to this day remains one of, if not the most important cases that African Americans have brought to the surface for the better of the United States. Brown v. Board of Education was not simply about children and education (Silent Covenants pg 11); it was about being equal in a society that claims African Americans were treated equal, when in fact they were definitely not. The book “Brown v. Board of Education: A Brief History with Documents” is Waldo E. Martin’s observation on not just the landmark case of Brown v. Board but also the institutionalized racism that was overcome to get there. It also documents other cases that Brown v. Board built upon to get the decision that challenged “separate but equal”. In this text Martin gives a glimpse into not just what the court order did from a legislative standpoint, but from a human standpoint, what happened to the people, community, and society in general both prior and in the wake of the of this monumental decision.
Brown v. Board of Education was a landmark case that was decided by the Supreme Court of America in 1954. It is a case that is believed to have brought to an end decades of increasing racial segregation that was experienced in America’s public schools. The landmark decision of this case was resolved from six separate cases that originated from four states. The Supreme Court is believed to have preferred rearguments in the case because of its preference for presentation of briefs. The briefs were to be heard from both sides of the case, with the focus being on five fundamental questions. The questions focused on the attorneys’ opinions about whether Congress viewed segregation in public schools when it ratified the 14th amendment (Benoit, 2013). Changes were then made to the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause.
The Brown v. Board of Education of 1954 is known for desegregating public schools in the U.S. In 1954 the Supreme Court ruled “in the field of public education the doctrine of separate but equal had no place” (Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, 1954). It was the 1st major educational policy. The Court’s decision in Brown created not just desegregation strategies, but also instructional approaches such as Title I programs, magnet schools, and bilingual and multicultural education (Contreras & Valverde, 1994).
Brown vs. board of education is considered to be one of the greatest Supreme Court decisions of the 20th century because it was unanimously voted that separating white and black public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the fourteenth amendment. Although slavery was finally ended at the end of the nineteenth century black people found themselves still in the process of fighting. What they had to fight for was their own rights. The Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the civil war brought about literal freedom but the beliefs and attitudes of whites, especially in the south kept the black people repressed. In this paper I would like to share the research that I found that helped to launch the fight for freedom in every aspect possible for black people and that is the case of Brown vs. Board of education.
Most African Americans have faced many injustices, but one court case that can be considered as a major win is Brown versus Board of Education (1965). The case was about how a girl named Linda Brown not being allowed to attend an all-white elementary school. The jurors debated on the fourteen amendment and on the term “separate but equal” (“Brown v. Board of Education”). After many discussions and debate later, court case decision not only gave justice to the little girl, but also to the case regarding Jim Crow like Plessy versus Ferguson that faced injustice of the “separate but equal” which in 1965, “the Supreme Court produced a unanimous decision to overturn Plessy vs. Ferguson” (“Separate Is Not Equal - Brown v. It is imperative to note that the case of Brown v Board of Education is based on a chronological history of the fight towards realization of human rights in the United States. This essay shall begin by discussing the history chronologically and accessing it whilst the essay goes along. It is clear that even though the United States constitution guaranteed equal rights to all men, the issue of slavery prevailed under violation of other human rights. It was only after the Civil War that slave trade was considered unlawful. It was not until 1865 that the Thirteenth Amendment was put into effect to help bring to an end slave trade. In the turbulent years that followed, the nation struggled to come to terms with the legacy of centuries of mistreatment of African-Americans and other minorities.” (“Sixty Years Later…” 1) Eloquently put, this quote represents the struggle America had with the case. One of the most important Supreme Court decision and ruling was that of Bown v Board of Education. This landmark Supreme Court decision ranks high among those which have promoted equal treatment and diversity, and it greatly impacted the future for African Americans because it laid the foundation for equal rights in education. The Supreme Court thus projected an issue in education which became a driving force that subsequently altered the economic, political, and social structure of this nation. This case was debated for nearly three years and decision was handed down by the Supreme Court in 1954. Essentially, the Brown decision ruled that segregated schools insured that African Americans would have an inferior education that would have an inferior education that would handicap thier ability to function in American society, and ordered that each state end segregated public schools "with all deliberate speed."
