Trying to get change, wear my Speedo and get into the pool for the first time. People are looking at me differently. New to school and the environment, but the question of why they look at me differently than themselves never fade away from my head. Before coming here, in Iran, I was never exposed to the idea of discrimination and multiple races, but not having the same skin tone or background as my teammates, I constantly endured racial comments; however, this adversity only made me work harder. I attended both Junior Varsity and Varsity practices and later I was being named Most Valuable Player of my team. Before coming here I always loved helping others and was active in my community, so I decided to go to my city’s Boys and Girls Club.
When people are struck with hardships in life, the way they react reveals their true character. Having a certain mindset can greatly influence how they handle problems, differentiating one person from another. Many can feel discouraged and feel like giving up when they hit a rough patch. In other cases, the will to be in a position better than where they are at the moment gives them the motivation to succeed. Adversity can have a positive effect on the development of an individual's character, providing them with the drive to overcome their current situation.
Life is full of challenges. In the stories, “Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity” and “Neighbours,” written by Jim McCormick and Lien Chao, the main characters illustrate benefits derived from taking risks. Even though both people in these texts undergo personal challenges, in “Neighbours” the character, Sally, receives greater benefits from taking risks than McCormick in “Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity”.
“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.
Adversity is something that many people are able to over come, most people can by themselves, others it requires a lot of help and if they work together and set aside petty fears it will be overcome. When they come out to the other side they will be stronger that before both mentally and/or
Overcoming adversity is hard, but these people survived the toughest obstacles that life could throw at you. Adversity is something everyone goes through, but these are extraordinary cases of what people went through. This crowd of people overcame adversity in three ways, only caring about what they thought, being creative, and facing their problems.
Adversity will be overcome when one becomes brave , determined , and has the willingness to fail.As being born without a arm, baseball player Jim Abbott, had a long journey ahead of him.Or the brave runners who ran the Boston Marathon after two bombs went off at the finsh line. last year.Even Malala Yousafzai, a young who got shot in the head by the taliban because she thought that girls all girl should get an education. All of these people remember to maintain in control , be brave , and accept failure when overcoming adversity.
What is the single greatest personal asset that will serve you in realizing these goals?
The character traits I possess that have helped me to overcome personal adversity are curiosity, focus, and composure. First of all, curiosity helps me to easily gain a lot of knowledge because I always have a desire to know more about every information. For example, why question is my frequency question in class. This help me to understand the lessons and memorize them longer. Especially, I always ask myself what I should do to be better; therefore, I can forget difficulties and continue to work harder. The second trait that help me to overcome my adversity is focusing on everything I do. I always know what I should do and how to make a plan for it. Planning and focusing help me to stay on the right track so that I can quickly achieve success. Last but not least, I believe that composure is one of the most important trait that can help me to solve my problems faster. In fact, whenever I have problem in life, I always try to calm down and spend time to think carefully instead of getting angry. Therefore, I can find out
Overcoming adversity is a challenge that everyone has to face. Some good examples of people who overcame adversity are the Boston Marathon runners, John J. Pinder, and Malala Yousafzai. They all had challenges to face, but they never gave up. Overcoming adversity is going to be hard, but the ending will be worthwhile, that’s why patience is needed to overcome adversity. Life is like a roller coaster, full of ups, downs, inside outs, sometimes you may start out slow, but as you go along, you speed up, in adversity, it may take some time to think about how to overcome it, but you’ get the hang of it and will eventually overcome it. Malala was faced with a lot of problems and challenges, but she pulled through and overcame adversity.
There have been many times I have faced adversity and failed or given up because the task was too daunting. But there was one specific time where I would not give up and I took the challenge head on and succeeded. I had just moved to Washington State and friends and classmates were telling me to try out for hockey. Now not even knowing how to skate at this time the idea was scary to me, but I decided to give it a try. Most kids my age had been playing since the could walk, so these kids had an immense amount of experience over me. Now I had little to no time to at least learn how to skate, so I didn't make a fool of myself. When I my first practice came around I started three years behind my friends. I was eager to start working as hard as
Adversity puts people in difficult or unpleasant situations which can create very strong emotions that can help or harm. When people face adversity, it is seen as a challenge and whether or not they overcome the challenge is personal. However regardless of whether adversity helps or harms, it is advantageous because it offers a challenge to overcome which builds character.
Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean? Life throws many different challenges at us at the most random times. Depending on whether you are coffee bean, carrot, or egg, you will respond to life’s challenges in different ways. Personally, I respond the way a carrot would to boiling water. I seem strong and tough, but when I face pain and adversity I become soft and lose my strength. In the past, when life has hit me with adversity, it has been hard for me to regain my strength.
Mariano Azuela's The Underdogs tells the story of a dauntless Indian farmer who almost unintentionally rises to a generalship in Pancho Villa's rebel army during the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Though the events that occur throughout the book are not actual events that took place during the revolution, Azuela is able to paint a very realistic picture of the revolution and leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the reader as one witnesses the failure of the rebels. This novel is a great teaching tool that reveals truths of the revolution that would not have been given justice through the traditional historical scholarship. Through fictional characters, Azuela's The Underdogs
What is perseverance? Perseverance is the ability to go on when things seem hopeless. It is also a measure of success, or at least how much sacrifice one is willing to make in the name of success. As students, it is impossible to achieve personal success without having a goal, or direction. The goal and direction that often propels us to achieve is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all efforts to succeed.
Every person faces adversity differently. In this selection, the question is this: are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean. The carrot faces challenges hard, seemingly strong, but comes out the other side soft and weak. The egg is fragile, with a thin shell, goes through its changes to become hardened on the inside. Finally, there is the coffee bean: through its adversity- its boiling water- it changes into something entirely different, while changing the circumstances and conditions around it. I believe there are all types of these people in the world; many are eggs and carrots, and slightly fewer coffee beans. Immense numbers of people don’t handle adversity well, and some never truly learn how to. I personally believe
