“A single Pacific bluefin tuna sells at auction for more than $100,000” (Arnold, 2012). The Pacific bluefin tuna is one of the most popular fish consumed in the world eaten mainly in sushi. In 2010 alone, the United States consumed twenty-four percent of the tuna consumed by the entire population. Due to its increasing growth in popularity the demand for wild bluefin tuna has caused the species to drastically decline to about 2 percent of its original percent population causing it to become endangered. Due to the drop in the amount of wild bluefin tuna left there have been serious changes to the ocean’s ecosystem. The Pacific blue fin tuna is one of the top predators in the pacific oceans food chain making it a tertiary consumer. For them to survive it must feed on the Ocean’s secondary consumers which are the anchovies, herring, etc. …show more content…
Those secondary consumers will eventually take over the ocean but will die off as there is not enough primary consumers such as crabs, shrimp, etc. for them all to eat however. After everyone has died only the producers will be the only organisms like in the ocean and since there are now no tertiary, secondary, or primary consumers to regulate them they will explode in numbers. A disruption to the ocean’s pelagic system can be avoided if the bluefin tuna is available to regulate the secondary consumers who regulate the primary consumers who regulate the producers, every organism will play an important role in making sure there is balance so if the bluefin tuna is gone the others will also be affected. The ocean’s marine pelagic system can be salvaged by considering sustainable sushi and taking advantage of sustainable
One of the distinct features of any common resource is that it is a “non-excludable good1”, meaning no one can be prevented from using what is available. As discussed, the consequence of this scenario is that it will produce a socially inefficient outcome. There are differing theories on how to achieve an economically feasible marginal cost and marginal social benefit equilibrium. The difficulty, of course, is to determine what the socially optimal supply level for Bluefin Tuna should be in relation to fish stock restoration and future sustainability as well as empowering the global community to act in unison. The discussion here
Overfishing is a death sentence to the world’s oceans. As technology continues to improve a great deal of fish can be caught quicker; but at what cost? The effects of overfishing can lead to the extinction of not just the animals being fished, but also the predators that rely on fish to eat. Ninety percent of the ocean’s largest animals have been wiped out due to overfishing (“Overfishing- A Global Disaster”, 2011). National Geographic cites the academic journal Science (2006) that predicts by 2048, all fisheries will collapse due to lack of ocean wildlife. Fish are not the only animal caught in the nets used by fishing vessels. Often animals such as dolphins, sharks, turtles, and seabirds are
The decline in Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thynnus Thunnus) would have an extraordinary monetary effect in the territory since they are viewed as a standout amongst the most resilient fish species and vulnerable to overfishing. Neighborhood companies which rely on Tuna will experience business decrease because of the effect and a significant diminishment in quantities of the Tuna. The Oceana Fact Sheet (2010), states there are two nurseries for tuna, one of which is the Gulf of Mexico and more than 90% bring forth and come back to the place they were conceived. (Paragraph two, Wildlife of Gulf of Mexico and Vulnerability to Oil, Ocean Fact
The California State Fish: the magnificent golden trout. It flawlessly glides through the water, its golden underbelly and blue-green back cloaking its body, making it one with the water. Appointed in 1947, the golden trout, or Oncorhynchus Mykiss Agua Bonita, are native to California, having populated only a handful of icy streams in the Sierra. However, this concoction of color is threatened, and every year, their population lessens.
Although bluefin tuna does provide food and livelihoods for many people, they are more than just seafood. The bluefin tuna is a top predator in the marine food chain, maintaining an important balance in the ocean environment (Walsh). Author Brian Walsh writes,“
Commercial fishing boats are pushing to catch as many Atlantic salmon as they can after a net pen broke near Washington's Cypress Island. Fishermen reported thousands of the non-native fish jumping in the water or washing ashore. The pen, in the state's northwestern San Juan Islands, contained about 305,000 Atlantic salmon. Environmentalists are concerned that the escaped Atlantic salmon could potentially mate and crossbreed with the Pacific salmon or compete with them for food but they are not completely sure what the ramifications will be. Now, owner Cooke Aquaculture and the Washington department of fish and wildlife are trying to determine how many escaped. The director of the wild fish conservancy northwest, Kurt Beardslee , called the
Black sea bass is an important recreational and commercial species along the Atlantic coast of the U.S. The market for black sea bass is for human consumption and is primarily sold fresh or frozen. In May of this year, NOAA scientists declared the southern stock of black sea bass successfully rebuilt. The catch limit for this popular fish will more than double this fall. The rebuilding plan was required by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, which requires that overfishing end immediately, that overfished stocks be rebuilt, and that stocks be subject to annual catch limits. The fish are also larger on average and are showing up in places where they haven’t
100,000. This number might seem large, but with 96.4% of the population declining after fisherman started hunting for these animals, the coveted fish might not be around for much longer. The Thunnus SPP, or better known as the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, is one of the largest bony fish in the world. At one and a half Mr. Zunic’s in height and 200 bags of potatoes in weight (6-10 feet, 1500 pounds according to animalplanet.com), the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is almost invincible, to predators in the fish class of vertebrates that is. The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is critically endangered due to overfishing. One fish was once sold for $1.76 million due to the fish’s delicy. The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is highly popular at high-end restaurants around the world. Boy, a tuna roll sure does sound great right about now.
I've always been enamored by the ocean. Growing up in the puget sound, I've been exposed at an early age going to places like the Pacific Science Center and the aquarium to find wonder in the animals and the habitats that they live in. I always remember consistently going to the tide pools that were offered at exhibits. Even though at a young age I was too scared to actually touch a lot of the animals, I was fascinated how they were able to be living in such a small area and thrive off each other. More specifically, The starfish caught my attention because of how uniqueThey are: shape, size, texture, and ability to regenerate is pretty cool. This interest grew as I went to beaches from the West Coast and even in Hawaii when I spent hours looking
The ocean makes up nearly three-quarters of the planet 's surface and contains about eighty percent of the life on earth. Millions of people all over the world depend on seafood heavily as a primary source of food. Americans alone consumed as much as 15.8 pounds of seafood per person in 2009 (NOAA). This is a lot of fish. In fact, it is so much that many populations of fish are going extinct. At this particular rate according to National Geographic, scientist predict that the earth is expected to lose all of its current fisheries by the year 2048 (Roach). The overfishing of our oceans leads to unmanageable practices that will eventually cause many species of fish to become extinct.
There is a common conception that due to the immense size of oceans and it’s species’ richness, species population decline is a rarity. However, such decline may result in a damaged marine ecosystem. A top predator that plays a key role in the marine ecosystem is the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus thynnus. This species is a warm blooded predator that are “highly migratory species that may reach a weight of 900 kg” (). The Western Northern Atlantic Bluefin Tuna migrate primarily to the Gulf of Mexico for spawning during late spring where “larvae are in preferred water temperature ranging from 20 degrees Celsius to 25 degree Celsius” (). They then migrate back to the northern West Atlantic for feeding where there “life span is an average of
I was raised around many different types of animals so I have had many different types of pets. This developed into a love of all things aquarium related at about the age of ten and I asked if I could get a beta fish. My father asked if I knew how to properly care for one and I did not. He informed me whenever I could prove how to do so then I he would allow me to have one. I spent about a month learning everything I could and saved up enough money to purchase everything I needed. I knew quite a bit of information about betas and even obtained the knowledge to maintain an aquarium. My father was so impressed that he bought me a small fish tank rather than spending my own money on a fish bowl. This hobby has continued my entire life and I am
Back in the 1950s fisherman had caught about 15 million tons of fish a year by applying military technology to industrial fishing. Which turned out to be a really bad idea because it ended up destroying the ocean. In recent years humans have harvested around 90 million tons of fish a year, which apparently is the human weight of China. If our current methods of fishing keep moving in the direction they are heading. We will deplete nearly 90% of the world's commercial fish by the year 2050.
The Bluefin Tuna possesses an elongated streamlined body which contains small to moderate sized scales throughout. The upper exterior is metallic blue and the lower exterior is silver in colour, with gold coruscation distributed sparingly around the body. In humans, their bodies are covered in skin which is the largest organ within the human body (Ebling and Montagna, 2017). The skeleton of the Bluefin tuna comprises of the vertebral column, jaw, ribs, cranium and intramuscular bones. ("Skeletal System Of Fish | Meaning Of Fish Skeleton Necklace", 2017). The skeletal system of the Bluefin tuna provides structure, provides protection, assists in leverage and assists in the production of red blood cells, in conjunction with the kidneys and spleen
There’s a river on the edge of Missouri where my family and I camped. My uncle called it “The ole’ Roarin’ River” because the river was always impossibly full of life and movement. My cousin and I decided, on the edge of daybreak, that we should take a swim. We jumped in and my petite self started to drift quickly downstream. My cousin yelled and motioned for me to swim. I was so scared that I might drown but the internal fire in me was fueled by the terrifying and dire situation. I made it to the edge of the river and climbed out yelling and jumping because I had done what I never thought was possible. I fought the current.
