The Wise Virgin (See Figure 19) is based on the parable of the virgins told by Jesus in Matthew 25:1-13. In the story, ten virgins are waiting for the arrival of their bridegroom. They do not know when the groom is coming, but five of the virgins bring oil for their lamps and are ready for his arrival. The other five do not bring oil to keep their lamps filled, and so when the groom arrived at midnight, they were not ready and were not allowed to go to the wedding feast.
