Part 3: Some Effects of Disney Movies and Formalism
“There’s enough ugliness and cynicism in the world without me adding to it” -Walt Disney
Disney often made movies during hard times, and the movies helped people enjoy themselves and regain hope... During the “Great Depression ... many people were trying to find an escape and turned to cinema. Films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves were often used as an outlet to a happier world ... Films were a cheap form of entertainment that became ... popular ... particularly Disney’s heartwarming films filled with joy and satisfaction” (Prouse, Scoff 5). Since the beginning, Disney has been bringing happiness into people’s lives. When someone watches a Disney movie, they get a warm feeling inside

In fact, a major reason Disney films are so successful is because “the films produced by the company reflect a reality that is free from many of the contradictions and complexities that trouble modern life” (Goddard - Pritchett 14). Even now, with all of the distractions today’s technology can offer, people need a good old fashioned break from the harsh realities that exist in the world. Disney movies provide that because they are old fashioned yet timeless and always relevant. Personally, when looking for a simple distraction from whatever might be going on in my life, I usually watch one of my favorite Disney movies. They offer an uncomplicated view of the world where the solution to a problem can be found in the form of a magic wand or true love’s kiss. The stories take the audience back to simpler times in life; childhood. Another reason “Disney Studios is so successful because, in part at least … the studio figured out what the people wanted and how to give it to them. After the success of Snow White, Disney tried to create realistic animation that lasted for some of Disney’s most classic movies. This era was called Disney Formalism. The beautiful drawings paired with interesting stories entertained children and adults while making the company well known and successful. With this new goal in mind and “In perusing and reaching the limits of hyperrealist animation, Disney became the most visible studio in American animation … Disney Formalist filmmaking … was established during a very brief period of Disney's early history with films [like] Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Bambi” (Pallant 52). This era included some of Disney’s classic and most beloved films. For their time, the animation looked realistic and was considered cutting edge. The deer in Bambi and the puppets in Pinocchio seemed almost life like. Though the films weren’t as successful as the company originally hoped when they were released, the films were still beautiful works of art. Disney’s movies were important to him so “Walt wanted his drawings that were animated to seem to be real things that had feelings and emotions and thoughts, and the main thing was that the audience would believe them and that they would care what happened to them” (Thomas, Johnston 35). A significant part of being a successful movie maker is having viewers care. Easily the most popular and successful television shows and movies
Tracey Mollet’s view over Disney’s positive influence is interesting. I understand how she feels like these positive and happy ending stories shed light on a depressing time in America. In my opinion it also glorified the idea of the existence of “American dream” and what exactly it looks like. Her article gave me an idea of the effects and importance of history in any social matter: especially in the literary form. Walt Disney personalized fairy tales tailored it for the American
In the realm of entertainment, Disney leads the way with creativity, bringing to life fairytales and stories that only the most imaginative child could come up with. Children of all ages, teenagers, and adults leave the theater of a Disney movie inspired, empowered, and entranced by the magic and wonder brought about.
According to Carl Hiaasen, “The secret weapon is trust. Disney is the most trusted brand name in the history of marketing. It hooks us when we’re little and never lets go; this unshakeable faith that Disney is the best at knowing what’s best.”(13) It is time that this myth be shattered.
In the trajectory of the Walt Disney films, positive values have always been reflected so that at the beginning of the movies children begin learning about them at an early age. There are infinities of movies that can reflect the benefits that Walt Disney films bring to children, but I would like to highlight four of the films produced by Walt Disney, which for me have been important in my.
Many Americans’ childhood was influenced by Walt Disney Production entertainment. Disney entertainment became one of the most well-known motion-picture production companies in the world. The founder, Disney had a talent in understanding and portraying American history, culture, and values (King, 2007, p. 266).
As a matter of fact, Walt Disney had a tremendous influence on mass media! He influenced the media to expand their business deals and resources. The release of his very successful movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs led the film to become the most successful motion picture! “The film became the most successful motion picture in 1938 and earned over $8 million on its initial release.” (“Walt Disney”) Likewise, the release of the film encouraged the media to use different special effects and record better frames. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first American film to be made in color, so it influenced the media to use the Technicolor process for their upcoming movies. “Snow White, the first animated feature in America made in Technicolor, was released in February 1938…” (“Walt Disney”) In the movie there is also sound. The sound, yet again caused the sensation to make a soundtrack.
Disney films are more than just magical fairytales. They are gateways back into our childhoods where dragons needed to be defeated and where fairy godmothers granted our deepest desires. These magical films also encourages little girls to feel confident about themselves.
alt Disney's movie has always been my favorite even at the age I am now. So now you probably wonder, " what does this have anything to do with why I should recommend you to English 101?" Well professor, Walt Disney is the creator of the world's largest animation empire as we all know today, but at first, in 1991 Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star because from their perspective; he lacked imagination and does not provide merit ideas to the team. Moreover, from Albert Einstein to the successful author Stephen King today, many of these influential figures failed many times before they could even reach success. The 19th best- selling author Stephen King had been rejected thirty times before he convinced his publisher to finally publish
What images come to mind as you reflect on your childhood? Playgrounds, blackboards, and soccer balls may be among the warmest of memories. Yet for many mermaids swim their thoughts, princesses get swept of their feet, and lions roar to their loyal place in the animal kingdom. There is no doubt that today’s entertainment has most of its touch using classical influences. Walt Disney has produced animated films that have captured the heart and imagination of audiences of all ages around the world through the magic of storytelling and imagery. Many of us appreciate the imagination and magic that Disney puts into its animations with out knowing they are based off of classical and traditional storylines
It seems like the entertainment icon Walt Disney Company has been around since the beginning of time, entertaining the public with its lifelike and imaginative animations and characters. Nearly every parent and child that was born in the last century has experienced a Disney animated film at some point in their lifetime, which has left either a negative or positive impression on them. The experiences with Disney films leaves most viewers with a warm and fuzzy feeling inside or the feeling of happiness, because the films themselves take the viewer on a ride out of their reality into the World of imagination, fairytales, and fantasy. On the contrary some ethnic viewers leave Disney films feeling misrepresents, disrespected, and upset regarding the way that Disney choses to represent race and cultures other than Caucasian in their films. The Disney company discriminates against people of ethnic backgrounds, does not take into consideration the cultural differences between ethnic groups and deliberately stereotypes and homogenizes all racial groups and protagonist in their films.
Walt Disney; When that name is spoken faces of children and adults alike light up with looks of sheer joy. When debating what to see at the movies the newest Disney flick is almost always decided upon over the others. With Disney people are 100 percent sure to walk out of the theater happy and smiling. From the catchy theme songs to the thrilling theme parks Disney has built the fantasy empire. Although he built the fantasy world Disney was not a man who walked around with his head in the clouds. He used his animation and film making skills to not only make fantastic movies but to also bring joy into times of war, fun into times of education, and excitement into times of vacation
“They told stories with daring female protagonists, such as Mulan, Belle and Ariel. They also told stories of very diverse cultures and people, from taking on Middle Eastern culture with Aladdin, to China with Mulan, and even painting out the African safari with The Lion King” (Nique 4). They included a diversity of cultures and strong women that set them apart from everyone else. In doing so, Disney was able to attract a wider audience that could relate to each movie while making them enjoyable for children and
Films, especially animated films and live action films produced by Disney, have been around for a while. Disney initially produced their first fully animated featured film in 1937 known as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Ever since then they produced many more animated films such as “Sleeping Beauty”, “Cinderella”, “Beauty and the Beast”, and more. They have produced many live action films as well starting in 1950 when they produced “Treasure Island”. Since the release of their first movies, there has been a recurring theme that has given Disney great success for the films they have produced.
Disney has been known for creating movies, television shows, and books about heroic saviors and damsels in distress, yet have you ever thought about the message it's sending to children? The princesses are all smart and beautiful, but if you are not apparently you are not worth being a princess. The princes are handsome and strong, once again if you do not fit the criteria you can not be a Disney prince. Not all of the characters fit this criteria. Such as Maleficent, she was extremely tall and skinny, but she had strong features that were not considered beautiful. Also Gaston, he had every girl in town going after him, but he only wanted the one with the most beauty and brains. What is the effect of Disney movies on American children?
Disney is one of the most successful and largest companies in the world. They have their hand in nearly every form of entertainment as well as media, and broadcasting. Disney is best known for their animated films, unique cartoon characters, catchy musicals, and fairy tales that most of us were first introduced to as children. They are one of the few entertainment companies in the World whose primary demographic is children and teens. Nearly everybody is familiar with the Disney name and its brand, and its realistic to suggest that nearly everybody has experienced a Disney film and animated character at some point in their lives; which may have helped to influence them or their behaviors or even their
