It's hard to be alone. It's hard to know that you're doing the right thing when no one else is with you. I think that if we all found something we are passionate enough about the way Mark is passionate about religion, we would all be very happy, even though Mark's no mistake policy is pretty cruel to himself and others. Passion and Courage go hand in hand in a way not much else does. When your are truly passionate about something or someone you would stand up for it no matter the circumstances or public opinion. Having courage is one of the most important qualities that someone could possibly have. In history, there are two types of people, the people who showcased lots of courage and the people who were not famous. Think about it, people …show more content…
Most people would've cracked in the face of two big adults standing at the other side of the desk telling you how wrong you were. When he was in Mautz's office, he never backed down for a second. Someone with the courage to never stop believing in themselves is someone who can't go unnoticed. The way in which Ellerby chose to handle the confrontation was extremely mature. He knew it was not his fault for Mark's decision and he never let Mr. Mautz intimidate him. Nobody in the book was as calm under pressure as him, and a lot of people were put under fire by adults in the book. Ellerby is a hero for the superhuman way he negotiated with Mautz. He refused to let Mautz tell him he was wrong and defended him and Eric at all costs. It was a David vs Goliath situation at that table, and it's safe to say he took the beast down. Teachers could refer back to this situation in this book because he did the mature thing to do by calling in an adult. He knew there was no way he could fully get out of trouble by himself. Mautz just didn't have that type of respect to him, so he pulled the "phone a friend card" and called his dad, who is a paid speaker who knows how to resolve conflicts. "'Dad? Hi, this is Steve. Look, could you come over to the school? I'm in a bunch of trouble and if I were these people I'd want you in on it. No, right now if you can...
Would you continue to stand up for what you believe in even if you know you will have to face some consequences? Mr. Morrison was not afraid to stand up for what he believes in, even if he knew that he might get in some trouble and have to face consequences. Mr. Morrison used to work at a railroad. One day he was working and he got into a fight with a white man. He knew when he started to fight that he would have to face some consequences, but that did not stop him
Ordinary courage is a book that tells the story of an ordinary man who is inlisted in the continental army in the revolutionary war. Joseph Plumb Martin is the young man fighting in this war, at the time he entered he was just a mere 16 year old kid but by the time his time in the continental army was up he became a man. This is a first person memoir of what it was like for a regular person living in a war zone, and dealing with the everyday fears of food shortage, low morale, and danger of attack. This is something that many people in todays world could not handle because even some of the old guys in the
As students we are brainwashed by ancient myths such as The Iliad, where war is extolled and the valorous warrior praised. Yet, modern novels such as Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried (THINGS) challenge those very notions. Like The Iliad, THINGS is about war. It is about battles and soldiers, victory and survival, yet the message O'Brien gives us in THINGS runs almost contradictory to the traditional war story. Whereas traditional stories of war take place on battlefields where soldier battles soldier and
In Tim O’Brien’s powerful novel, The Things They Carried, the author undoubtedly emphasized the quintessential theme of ‘The Nature of Courage’ and how their differences affected the different members of O’Brien’s platoon. It is hard to have courage when one is faced with a dangerous situation, and often being courageous is not something you can teach it is just something inside that keeps you going when things get tough. The character Jimmy Cross, while he is seen as a minor character compared to others like Kiowa, Rat Kiley, Tim O’Brien himself, and Curt Lemon; Cross is actually a perfect depiction of the nature of courage due to the tunnel incident in the very beginning of the novel.
Throughout history, there have been countless times whenre individuals have courageously fought for change and societal justice. For instance, Gandhi helped India gain their independence, even though the circumstances were extremely risky for him, and could have led to his arrest or even death. However, he continued to persevere through it all, and was able to accomplish great things for his country. Another example is Malala Yousafzai, who promoted the education of girls in her country. Despite the clear threat of the Taliban, she continued to fight hard for her cause. Courage can be defined in many different ways, such as the ability to persevere and accomplish something in a frightening or risky situation. Examples of courage can be seen all around the world. Without courageous people, society would not have been able to improve. Being courageous is difficult, and requires an abundance of dedication and perseverance. It also includes remaining strong, despite the challenges that may occur along the way.
We have all seen it in movies, the big muscle guy in a cape swopes down, and saves the day. May of us might think “wow he is so brave.” When talking about courage most people associate it with physical features. However, courage is defined, as an act of braver in a frightening situation. In the book, Beautiful Souls by Eyal Press, he shows that there is more to courage, than just physical features. The book shows how people test their limits. By risking their own lives to save those around them. All while disobeying stick laws that could lead to death.
In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien expresses to the reader why the men went to the war and continued to fight it. In the first chapter, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien states “It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather they were too frightened to be cowards.” The soldiers went to war not because they were courageous and ready to fight, but because they felt the need to go. They were afraid and coped with their lack of courage by telling stories (to themselves or aloud) and applied humor to the situations they encountered.
“Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity.” That is the motto. On July 26, 1908, U.S. Attorney General Charles Bonaparte ordered a group of newly hired federal investigators to report to Chief Examiner Stanley W. Finch of the Department of Justice. About one year later, the Office of Chief Examiners was renamed the Bureau of Investigators. It later became the Federal Bureau of Investigators in 1935. With headquarters in Washington D.C, the FBI is our prime source of investigative resources and responsible for more than 200 crime categories.
Throughout the different careers available in the criminal justice system, all persons are expected to rigorously enforce the laws of the land and create a safer space for civilians.

“... I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see through it not matter what” (Lee, 11). This book is a story about two siblings that experienced many things throughout the whole book, most of them hard and new to them, but at the end, they assimilated to face these things. Their father, Atticus, was a lawyer who did everything at his hands to always do the right thing, and as a result of that, Jem and Scout met several circumstances that other kids weren’t exposed to and they learned to forgive and and appreciate others the way they are. Compassion and forgiveness are perceptible in this book and appreciable things like Camellias, and Red Geraniums can represent such strong emotions.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~ Winston Churchill. This quote defines what it is to be courageous, to be courageous is to persevere even if you know you will fail. This kind of courage is the courage which both Harold Crick in Stranger Than Fiction and Jean Louise “Scout” Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. In Stranger Than Fiction, an IRS agent, Harold Crick, with a monotonous life learns that you must not only survive, but you must truly live. This lesson is taught through a series of events that lead to his breaking out of his shell and truly living his life. The events are preliminarily put into action through Harold hearing the voice of the author of a book about his life. In To Kill A Mockingbird, a tomboyish six-year-old, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, discovers the true meaning of camaraderie and bravery. Her friendships are strong but her definition of courage is flawed. In the end, she realizes a great truth, that to really know someone, you have to imagine yourself in their shoes. Courage is important to these two characters, as they both discover what it really means to be brave and what the true definition of courage is. Courage is not always outspoken, sometimes courage is knowing that you will fail, but trying and failing anyway and then accepting your failure.
First, I'd like to start off this by saying how courageous this god among men is. Spencer Hack is an amazingly brave role model. This man unceasingly speaks what he thinks is right and always speaks his mind. I would never have the courage to do that. Spencer Hack is also one of the most achieved people I have met in my useless life. Whenever the world is against this man, he always knows what to do, he stands up and speaks his mind, and you have to admire that about this man/role model who can face divine judgment and still face another day. This man can face the pressure of a million suns and stand up again as an even greater role model. Spencer Hack will always be my role model. That is
There are many risks involved when a person comes in contact with courage. A person's peers or the people close to them can be highly judgmental, especially if what you are doing clashes with common beliefs or behaviors. This stands very true when looking at the life of Martin Luther King Jr. His peers were not only the African American population, but also white upper-class clergymen. In the first line of Martin Luther King Junior's letter to the clergymen he states that he is "confined here in the Birmingham City Jail."(303) Dr. King took a great risk of being judged, solely by writing a letter to his peers. He knew that the clergymen already had their own ideas about him, but he took an even bigger risk by writing them from his jail cell. Another major risk that people take while being courageous is risking their life for the lives of others. In "And the Band Played On," Randy Shilts tells the story of a young female doctor, Grethe Rask, who risked her life because she worked in a clinic that didn't even provide the " basics [such] as sterile rubber gloves or disposable needles."(330) He goes on to describe even more horrifying details about
