I do have a directing part in my family due to the fact I am the oldest boy and everyone seems to come ask me to direction and advice. Three major traits I have gained include time management, teamwork, and diligence. Managing time requires an abundance of practice, and my typical schedule, as a full time mechanical engineering undergraduate student and a part time employee, forced me to plan my days effectively in order to complete all of my work in a timely manner. Much of this work involved participating with teams of people with various backgrounds and personalities. My high school career had little focus on group assignments; however, the university places a major emphasis on working on teams. With this extensive practice, I have developed the ability to work alongside people with extremely different dispositions and backgrounds. Succeeding in the mechanical engineering degree program is not easy, and as a result, I have spent several weeks focused solely on school. Diligently completing difficult assignments has gotten me to where I am today. During my first year of college, an upperclassman told me, “Although the work does not get easier, you get better at it.” The virtues of time management, teamwork, and diligence are evidence that this statement holds

My personal style preferences were spot on. My work style results were almost right in the middle, but lean a little more towards working alone and being reserved. I agree with this because I love to work alone, I prefer it much more then group and team work. It isn’t because I can’t work on a team, I do a really good job at working with other people and I don’t mind helping others. Throughout middle school and my freshmen year of high school, I was never extremely comfortable in large group projects. For most of my life, I preferred to work alone or do most of the work in group projects. There was a time, however, in my sophomore Project Lead the Way class where my teacher was explaining to us the grave importance of group work and how it translates into the real world of engineering. After the speech, we were put in groups of eight to solve simple engineering problems, and I began to push myself to interact with my unknown peers. In this reflection, I choose to write about the assignments surrounding my object, the Albina mural project documentary film. The research part of the assignment for the annotated bibliography required working in teams. For the most part, I really enjoyed this experience since it forced me into a situation where I had to find a way of incorporating everyone's thoughts and ideas in a manner that complemented and respected each of our individual leadership styles. At first, it was difficult to find a way of holding everyone accountable so that there would not be shifting blames at the end of the project. However, as a group, we decided to go with a divide and conquer approach. This was effective and efficient, however, I realize in the real world this only works when every team member does their part in a timely fashion. During the research phase, I learned quite a bit about myself that I didn't know in high school. For example, when I have to, I am willing to be the person that steps up to the plate and takes charge. Taking on more of a driver’s role is something I would like to continue expanding moving forward. I used to believe that I did not perform very well in groups. I am an observer who likes to learn alone. I thought I learned best when I worked on my own. Even though I always knew group work had many positive values, I was more comfortable with the lecture-based approach and resisted group work merely because it involved change, not because it had a collaborative learning approach. However, during the learning community project, I came to realize that I learn more effectively when I work in groups. Working in a group was like an adventure for me; there were both exciting and challenging times while preparing for the learning community project.
