Performance Management at the University of Ghana It is commendable that the Balme Library is seeking to enhance their diverse customer base through several initiatives, including the improvement of their performance management system. Aguinis (2013) has noted the importance of an organization’s mission and goals being tied to the performance management plan. There are two prerequisites that Aguinis (2013) lists before a performance management system can be implemented: knowledge of the strategic goals of the organization and knowledge of the job. The job analysis is clearly a fundamental part of any effective performance management system.
Negative Consequences Resulting from a Failure to Perform Job Analysis The proceeding explanation of the purpose of a job analysis exposes the danger of failing to carry out this basic step in the performance management system. A job analysis can be likened to an instruction manual for build your own piece of furniture. The job analysis will lay out the KSAs needed to adequately perform a job in a similar way to the instruction manual which will alert the builder to the tools needed, the parts included, and the steps needed to carry out the process of building the piece of furniture. As a novice builder will quickly ascertain, certain knowledge of the tools, how they work, the tricks to making them work properly will greatly aid in the success and timeliness of the project. Failing to understand the complexities of the position, the interactions the position will have with others, the background that will enhance the performance of the position, the skills that can translate effectively to the position, the aptitudes needed and so forth will likely result in the ineffectiveness of the position as well as the performance of the organization (Aguinis, 2013). Since each job has a specific set of tasks and skills required to perform the tasks, it is essential to have a solid understanding of these to most effectively gain a positive impact from a position
