Performing Whales In SeaWorld Killer whales have been a staple for entertainment for decades and it has been attracting guests to various amusement parks throughout the world but theres a hidden world about these animals that not many people know about. Just like with any great business there are things that companies do not want you to know about their products, and things of that nature. Some would say it’s just good business to keep the negative aspects of their businesses out of the consumers eye, but I’d like to shed a little bit of light on one business in particular, SeaWorld. SeaWorld is known for their marine mammal shows like Orcas, Dolphins, and SeaLions. To the viewers eye the animals look well taken care of and happy and healthy. Unfortunately, that is just good business and if they were to reveal the truth behind the way they care for their biggest money makers, the Orcas, SeaWorld would no longer be known for their great entertainment shows. We understand why people love dolphins and why many want to see them close up, but putting whales and dolphins in tanks for our entertainment is wrong. In 1961 the first wild Orca whale was captured, a female who was sick and disoriented from California in Newport Harbor. Upon being introduced to her new home in Vancouver, a small tank, she smashed her rostrum (nose) into the tank’s wall and died. It wasn 't until three years later, 1964, when the next wild Orca was
The corporate officials of SeaWorld used facts to convince viewers to believe their credibility instead of those of BlackFish by different logistic angles such as their many years of being in business. They stated in the website that in the more than fifty years SeaWorld has been in business, they have built a diversified portfolio of 11 destination and regional theme parks which proves they are a well-rounded corporation. They inform the viewer that their programs and practices are based solely on the wellbeing of the animals; “Our advanced programming applies a broad range of best practices based upon behavioral enrichment, preventive health, veterinary medicine and facilities design and management. Our programs and policies are affirmed by numerous federal and state laws, including the Animal Welfare Act, Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act and other statuses”(SeaWorld Website). They make it their priority to accommodate environmental, social and economic sustainability across the company and throughout their employee culture, which is a huge part of having a thriving business. With this aspect of the business, they show that they are reliable and a trustworthy corporation. They state in the website how they have over 21,000 team members nationwide, which appeals to how the crew members are treated across the country, otherwise they wouldn’t have any employees. They make many
For several years, Americans have been visiting amusement parks, like SeaWorld and Six Flags, to observe large animals like orcas, also known as killer whales. These whales are quite difficult to view in the wild, but can now be seen for a simple fee. Orcas are known to be one of the smartest mammals. They are friendly, and this has caused people to take advantage of them. For the past sixty years, people have brought these massive creatures into their aquariums to make a profit from their exhibitions. Often, without considering the orcas' quality of life. While kept in captivity, killer whales are forced to do many tricks they normally wouldn’t do in the wild. Over the years, there have been numerous controversies regarding killer whales
For many years, we’ve been going to such places like, SeaWorld, and Six Flags, to see vast animals, like Orcas, also known as the killer whale, which we wouldn’t normally see out in the wild. Orcas have been around for millions of years; it’s known to be one of the smartest mammals, closest to humans. Since of their friendliness, people have taken advantage of them. For the past sixty years people have brought these massive creatures into their aquariums to make profit out of it, but never thought about their lives. What if you were kept in a cage for years, and was pushed to do such activities, you wouldn’t do in your normal life. While being in captivities, killer whales are forced to do plentiful tricks, which they normally wouldn’t do
The research shows that killer whales are not healthy in captivity. But we can stop this and seaworld has taken some steps to help solve the problem that orcas aren’t healthy in captivity. This problem affects the orcas big time, and the trainers that take care of them. Killer whales in the wild are having a great time, but remember in some countries there are no laws stopping them from catching or killing orcas. Maybe we should call them killer humans, instead of calling orcas killer whales because they’re really the problem. Research highly suggest that they expand their tanks or just plain out stop pulling killer whales out of the ocean. Some laws have been passed in the US to stop people from killing orcas or pulling them out of the ocean.
At least 164 Orcas, Killer whales, have died in captivity all of them being premature deaths. Orcas should not have to suffer in captivity and should be left alone and stay in the wild. All Orcas in captivity will die at half there age. They must live in tiny tanks equaling to us living in a bathtub. They are captured from the wild when they are young and are taken from their family and then forced to interact with other whales from different whale pods which also speak a different language then them.
To begin with, if I was currently an advocate for the environment and animals I would first focus on the Orcas, or killer whales, at theme parks, specifically Sea World. First of all, Sea World is inhumane. Five of the Orcas currently at sea world were “whale-napped” from the oceans they called home. For example, Tilikum, one of the most know whales in the Sea World franchise, is now thirty-two years old. He was captured at the age of two by, which means he has been in captivity for thirty years. And, before anyone says Tilikum was injured so they “rescued” him I want to say that it is fact that Tilikum was not injured. He was taken from his family and confined to a tiny tank just so people could make a hefty profit. Also, if the Orcas are
SeaWorld doesn’t have the whales best interest at heart and doesn’t deserve to continue to operate. These whales are psychologically disturbed and SeaWorld knows how they are treating them is completely wrong. During one of the tours they said “ Whales live up to 25 years in the wild but they tend to live longer in our park”(Cowperthwaite). This is scientifically wrong Orca’s live the normal life span of a human being, sometimes even longer. If SeaWorld is making millions of dollars off of these animals you would think they would at least tell the public the correct information. One of the former trainers has said “Young orcas have so much energy and curiosity—I could
The longest a captive born Orca has very lived is twenty-five years (Rose, 3). The average life expectancy is six years in captivity. Eighty six percent of 135+ whales in captivity since 1961 are now dead (KIWE, 3). SeaWorld, one of the most famous marine parks exhibiting Orca whales, has experienced approximately one Orca death a year since beginning their breeding program. It is reasonable and logical to expect at least a third of all captive whales to still be alive today considering the number of males and females, years since the first Orca entered captivity, and life expectancies in the wild, but only twenty percent is still living. “The most parsimonious explanation for this failure to show improved survivorship, despite the effort by Oceanaria to advance husbandry techniques in the past forty five years, is that Orcas are inherently unsuited to confinement” (Rose, 3).
Orcas are genuinely kind, brilliant, and extremely family oriented. In captivity these natural instincts are demolished. Orcas in captivity are known to suffer from depression, aggressiveness, health issues, rape, stress, shorter life
The SeaWorld trainers follow a very precise script whilst delivering shows to the public and have to be very careful with what they say. Of course, because we are so naïve to what actually goes on behind the scenes, we are brainwashed into thinking it is morally acceptable for these whales to be in captivity. For example, the trainers say that a good age for a whale to live to is around 30 years old; when in fact, a killer whale in the wild can live up to the age of 70 to 80. Does this not show we are damaging population numbers and cutting lifespans of these wonderful whales? Another fact trainers mention is that it is ‘normal’ for male orcas to have a collapsed dorsal fin - this is a common condition, they say. You will be shocked to know
The world was created for all beings. Not just human beings. Nalani, Makaio, Malia, and Katina are just a few of the victims of commercial entertainment that has seen many orcas plucked from their homes and family. Well, you can probably guess what I’m going to talk about, Seaworld controversy. Managers versus activists, and how are those whales really being treated.
It is extremely unfair and immoral to profit from the mistreatment of animals. Many marine parks and recreational parks use killer whales as their main attraction, and without the whales the attendance would drop drastically. That means millions and millions of dollars would be lost in revenue and parks like SeaWorld would not be able to cash in on it. Therefore, these recreational parks provide entertainment and allow guests to view the animals up close. But the public rarely
Although SeaWorld is known worldwide for their marine animal life along with many other attractions inside the parks, their methods to sustain this marine animal entertainment has become controversial due to their allegations of animal abuse and ethical misconduct. The treatment they give to their marine animal life is not adequate for these mature adult animals to live as they would in the wild. This mistreatment along with SeaWorld’s ethical misconduct of it marine animal life is wrong; SeaWorld should be held accountable through stricter regulations and better living conditions for animals held captive.
Killer whales, which are also known as orcas, are one of the world’s most powerful predators and are the largest members of the dolphin family. They are highly intelligent and social creatures, especially because of their ability to communicate and work together with members of their pod to catch prey (National Geographic). Orcas are beautiful and fascinating animals that have attracted the attention of humans for many years, however, the lives they are forced to live while being kept in concrete tanks and being reduced to objects used only for the entertainment of humans is sickening. Captivity not only causes orcas to suffer from poor mental and physical health problems, but this can also create dangers for trainers. Despite that, they are forced to endure harsh conditions and sadly the show goes on.
SeaWorld: a park known for shows with sea lions, otters, dolphins. Though perhaps the most important factor is the daily Killer Whale presentations. The first SeaWorld park opened on March 21, 1964 in San Diego. Throughout the years, people have questioned whether SeaWorld is morally right. In the film Blackfish (2013), former and present SeaWorld trainers, SeaWorld representatives, and people who have experienced SeaWorld are interviewed and tell about their stories and thoughts on SeaWorld. Being emotional, and, at times, graphic, the film is a perfect example of why Killer Whales should not be kept in captivity for human amusement.
