How can injustice, either felt or witness, shape one’s life? Injustice is defined as a lack of fairness. For one’s country, nationalism is defined as a patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts. An extreme form of nationalism is marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries, but this is not always the case in some situations. The book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, where Marjane “Marji” is the first person main character herself, shows excellent, direct examples of patriotism and, more evidently, revolt. Persepolis is about the Islamic Revolution in the 1900s from the perspective of a ten to fourteen-year-old, and how the main character’s life has been changed because of her experiences in Iran. Marjane feels the government is unjust and unfair. She distinctly rebels by smoking a stolen cigarette, cutting class, and following her older friends to a western restaurant. Although her attempts at persuasion have failed, her parents succeed at smuggling gifts back to bring them through the Iranian border. These gifts include a denim jacket, athletic shoes, as well as a large poster for her room. Satrapi, not stopped by her mother who caught her ditching class, continues her revolt by leaving the house with her new western clothes.
