Last year would be my final season playing minor house hockey for the Vancouver Thunderbirds. Fortunately, I had the chance to share my experience with an awesome group of guys where I was chosen to lead our team towards being one of the best in the league. Throughout the season, I encountered new responsibilities and challenges I had not dealt with before. The two things I learned most was the power of communication and how to work with what you’ve got.
At every level of any team sport communication is one of the most vital components to success. Because teams are often comprised of players who have not played together, getting to know each other well is essential to having strong communication. As captain and center position I got to know

In soccer you must be able to communicate with not only one, but with all of your team mates. This is something we worked on from the start. We communicated in many different ways such as training on a daily basis, to enduring a punishment together as a team. Even calling each other out became a common way of communicating. Everyone in the team had to learn to collaborate with each other even if they didn’t like it. It seemed kind of pointless at first but it was all part of building chemistry with each other. It was difficult year after year loosing and gaining people to be able to accept new players in to our family.
It is essential that there is effective communication to build an effective team. Effective teams need to work well together and that team cohesiveness depends on building strong relationships among team members. Communication is crucial and is driven by the team leader who will work with the team to establish ground rules and work to bring the team together so that it can accomplish its goals. All teams will go through expected stages of development, from forming to storming to norming and eventually performing according to Tuckman. Navigating through these stages effectively will help teams build relationships which in turn improves communication. Effective team communication can lead to both personal and professional development. Some examples of good communication are the holding of regular catch up meetings, active listening (by management and team members), regular feedback, clear vision and goals. In contrast to the above poor communication skills can have an adverse effect on team working. If team members are not communicating amongst themselves then
In today’s society, there are many ways in which people communicate within their individual community. One community in which many people do not fully understand is the game of baseball. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the U.S. and has been deemed America’s pastime. For me, sports are my life, especially when it comes to this particular game. I started playing baseball around the age of 4 and continue to play here at the university for the UC Club Baseball Team.
During this period I learned to improve my work ethic, communication and critical thinking skills. It expanded my ability to pay attention to detail and think critically in intense and stressful situations. I officiated at every level even up to the National Hockey League. It was a promising career, however, during this time I came to the realization I wanted more. It was great to get paid to be in a new city every single night and only have to work five hours a day four times a week. This did not satisfy my desire to truly understand the world and to truly make a difference in the world. Hockey was not intellectually stimulating enough to be able to make a career I would be happy with. Ultimately, you are doing the same thing day in and day out just with different faces and different names. During that time period I learned that I like to help people and I like a challenge. During an offseason I spent a summer down in Peru doing some medical volunteer work. I thought I might want to be a doctor. What I learned from that experience is I can be thrown into situations outside my expertise; where I adapt, fight, and
It has been identified that through sports psychology one can improve their physical ability and performance. Sports psychology is the study of how the mind, mental states and behaviour effect sporting performance. There are several sport psychology techniques, which have helped me become a better volleyball player. These techniques include planning for performance, controlling arousal levels, mental rehearsal and concentration.
In earlier days sports psychology was mostly concerned with developing assessment methods that would identify those people with the potential to become serious superior athletes. Today the focus is on psychological training, exercises that strengthen the mental skills that will help athletic performances on the path to excellence. These skills include mental imagery and focus training. If an athlete is serious about becoming the best he or she can possibly be, the most essential ingredient is commitment to practice the right things. It takes incredible commitment to reach the top: a commitment to rest and train the body so it can perform under the most demanding conditions and a commitment to train the mind to

The price that we pay is the value that we associate to any product, whether it is a good or service. It is the compensation given to a person or authority to purchase an object or service. The greater the value associated to the product, the greater the price.

Of course I had dreams of playing professional sport like every other young male in the world but, a wise man spoke to me and he asked me how much my favorite basketball player makes on average, I did the research and Lebron James makes over 300 million dollars annually. Younger me got that information and as expected I held strong on my dreams of being a professional athlete until he showed me 0.0015% of Americans make it into the NBA.”Out of every 10,000 kids playing basketball in high school only 3 will make it to the pros. Note, this doesn’t mean they’re going to stay in the pros more than 5 seconds. This doesn’t mean they’re going to get a sneaker deal and be in a Pepsi commercial This simply means they’ll get drafted.” (Odds of Playing).
Sports’ marketing is becoming more readily known as the vehicle that drives the sports business to success. It is “orientated toward consumers and about thinking, deciding and acting in terms of the final consumer. You have to know who your consumers are, what they want and need and use this effectively as a sports marketer orientating the drive more toward the market, not the product (Sports Marketing: The motor that drives the sports business
Communication is the key to success. A team without communication could never be successful. Communication is important because the group needs a clear goal and also they need to have shared objectives. For example, in football a defense needs to be on the same page; if two players on the defense are on different pages then the defense will not be successful. You need everyone to share the same objective in order to succeed, not just a few people but all as one. To ensure a team’s success, everyone on the team has to be accountable. Everyone has a job on the team to contribute to becoming successful as a whole. Also you need trust in order to become successful; you have to be able to trust in your team that they will give their all for the team.
"If industry is to be successful in dealing with public opinion . . . it must learn the language of the people, it must consider the study of public opinion as important as any phase of its operations. It must recognize that public opinion can be measured, and utilize the increasingly scientific methods developing today for gauging it"(Ross)
