Personal Ethical Analysis

Ethics codes provide us with general conduct standards in which professionals are expected to adhere to. These standards are used to form a sense of unity and agreement within professional organizations. When I think about ethics, I believe it should be simple, but in reality, ethics are complex with multiple layers. Ethical codes are important to use as a guideline for acceptable behavior, but an ethics code will not be able to guide me with every situation. Because of this, it is important that I have my own personal sense of ethics and values. My ethical practice is based on my own values, cultural and religious beliefs, and practices. I tend to be a “heat of the moment” person. Ethics are important because I need a place to turn to when my personal feelings and emotions are clouding judgment.

Family instilled a strong work ethic in me as a child. My parents never missed a day of work. I was taught that if you want something, you must work for it. According to my ethical lens inventory, this supports my classical value of temperance. I seek to satisfy my duties. My strong desire to succeed and lead a fruitful life also comes from the influence of my family. It is important to me to be a good role model for my husband and my children. Guido describes ethics as “a process of determining right conduct from wrong” (para 2, p. 3). My personal view of ethics is along the same lines as this and has been instilled in me my entire life. My code of ethics includes respect for myself and others; honesty in my endeavors, graciousness in both my personal and professional lives, and accountable for my actions. I use nonmaleficence and beneficence in every aspect of my life. I also strive to honor the proverbial do unto others as they would do unto me.

According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, ethics is defined as “moral principles that govern a person’s or group’s behavior.” Therefore, in an ideal world, ethics should play the ultimate role when making a decision. If ethics are the principles which guides one’s behavior then, ideally, all decisions should be made entirely based on ethics. Unfortunately, such is not always the case.

Personal ethics is the generally accepted principles or practices of right and wrong governing the conduct of individuals. Apparently, the government has established rules and laws which focus on ensuring a comfortable workplace environment for all employees in an organization. You briefly mention higher power or inner conscience, but not specifically the ethical theories related to them. For instance, the theological argument believes in an intelligent designer. If that’s the case, how does that play into how people act? Or if we need to follow duty to be moral without the need of a higher power, how does that effect a person’s behavior?

Everyone’s views of ethics and morals are different because we all have experience different things in life that have contributed to the way we view things ethically acceptable. Throughout my 21 years on this earth my views on ethics and morals have change. I think that ethics and morals are taught to us by the people we surround ourselves with and the environment that we are in. For example, the behaviors that I experienced in public school on the regular basis, would seem bazar to the people in the North Hills school district, where I transferred to in my junior year of high school. In public school people would roam the halls, talk over teachers, and do a whole lot of other things that aren’t normal in a high school setting.

In today's world, individuals can make a single decision that can have a profoundly positive or negative effect on their family, their employer, coworkers, a nation, and even on the entire world. The life we lead reflects the strength of a single trait: our personal character. Personal ethics are different for each person but for the most part, people want to be known as a good person, someone who can be trusted, and he or she are concerned about his or her relationships and personal reputations. As we go through this paper, we will focus on answering what are ethics, what are your ethics, where do your ethics come from, and how do you manifest your ethics?
