Ethics codes provide us with general conduct standards in which professionals are expected to adhere to. These standards are used to form a sense of unity and agreement within professional organizations. When I think about ethics, I believe it should be simple, but in reality, ethics are complex with multiple layers. Ethical codes are important to use as a guideline for acceptable behavior, but an ethics code will not be able to guide me with every situation. Because of this, it is important that I have my own personal sense of ethics and values. My ethical practice is based on my own values, cultural and religious beliefs, and practices. Clients/students come to counseling with the expectation that everything they say will be kept in confidence. There are times when I cannot maintain confidentiality and it is my responsibility to make sure that my clients/students are aware of this. In the school setting, confidentiality becomes a little more complicated. I must adhere to FERPA because I am working with minors and I should also be able to balance student’s ethical rights with their parent’s wishes. Within the school, there will be times where I need to collaborate or consult with school administrators or staff. What do you think about your being able to follow the ethical codes for our profession? I believe that it is very tough to follow the code of ethics in the helping profession. Considering how the majority of principals have no or little exposure to the ASCA national model it is very important that we build a supportive relationship with our principals. It is often assumed that it is a counselor’s duty to be involved in disciplinary, administrative, and record keeping tasks; however it is not what are being trained to perform. It is the counselor’s task to inform the principal what the ASCA national model is about in a positive and supportive way. First adopted in 1914, the code of ethics for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is the model for professional conduct for all ASCE members. The code of ethics is an excellent model as it is broken down into eight canons for further understanding. The purpose of each canon is to serve as a guide and reminder for professional engineers that they are to have the moral and ethical integrity the profession calls for at all times while holding safety paramount. The ASCE code of ethics is very informative and insightful because although each canon does not go into great depth, the canons leave room for interpretation under different situations.

Every action and decision one makes is derived from ethics. In my opinion, ethics is about doing the right thing no matter the situation. Ethics has a lot to do with one’s personal values and it is important due to the fact that it influences the way a person governs their life. I believe being ethical has a lot to do with the way one was brought up and the values that were instilled into them from a young age. My ethical views originated from my upbringing and the lessons my parents taught me. My parents are big believers of always doing the right thing and that mindset got passed onto me. My ethical values shape who I am as a person and impacts the way I go about life. Ethics is extremely important to me because I want to be the best version of myself and with that entails
When first applying to this program, I had a general idea of what school counseling was, but I never knew how many responsibilities a school counselor actually had. When I initially received my copy of the ASCA National Model, I was intimidated and unsure of what to expect. I soon learned that the ASCA National Model is a framework for school counseling programs and helps build a common understanding of what school counselors are responsible for. It consists of four components, foundation, management, delivery, and accountability, that make up the framework of the ASCA National Model and is based on the themes of systemic change, leadership, advocacy, and collaboration (ASCA, 2012). With that said, school counselors hold many more responsibilities than what they were once thought to. As a future school counselor, I now know that my duties go beyond simply helping students when they are experiencing a problem. I will be responsible for helping students achieve their academic, social/emotional, and career goals, which will ultimately help them become successful members of society. MORE????
