My Growth as a Writer
People always aspire to get better at something. Whenever someone starts to learn something new, they’re not good at it right off the bat. This is the case for learning how to write and develop arguments. I started to write in elementary school, and I was not excellent at it. After many years of writing, I have definitely grown to be a better writer. My papers in SLC have better word choice than in my FLC papers.
I had poor word choice in my FLC paper “The Black Diamond”. “I had to follow my Dad and face my fears of the biggest scariest trail on the mountain.” (Kessis). In that sentence, I used the adjectives biggest and scariest to describe the mountain. These words are very weak and I could’ve made the paper better if
My earliest experience with writing was my learning period that formed not only my style of writing but how I studied and the ability to apply words and concepts into a structured format. The process at first was difficult because it was my first time being exposed to structured writing which caused me to put it off until the last minute or lose interest in the topic I was writing about. The rowdy classroom was eager to release near the end of the day, but we knew we had to face one of the more uninteresting subjects of the day: middle school English.The teacher thoroughly explained our assignment which made each one of us cringe. In my first “Who I am as a Writer” paper I stated how one of the areas that I needed to improve was writing. I went into more depth talking about how my writing is not descriptive enough and how I cannot grab the reader's attention. Even though I still need to continue making improvements, I have gotten better in both of these aspects. Compared to my papers in high school my introduction paragraphs have improved.
My writing journey has been pretty remarkable over the years. A lot of trial and error was utilized in discovering the writing style and techniques that would give me the most sense of accomplishment. I’ve been learning through the unit learning activities so far as College Composition II will be a bit more challenging due to the expectation of being able to write an effective academic piece from a formal perspective. There is always room for improvement which is why this semester I want to work on three aspects of my writing: sentence structure, grammar, and learning how to effectively grab my audience’s attention. Sentence structure and grammar have been difficult aspects for me to grasp in my writing due to the lack of frequency in writing academic papers.
My growth as a writer has been going uphill since the very first mini paper. I came to Heartland Community College thinking, I was an okay writer. They told me when I took the placement test I wrote a college level but I didn’t see it myself. I would look at other classmates work and be kind of upset with myself for not making the same choices they did. Maybe I could have changed a word or maybe talked about a different subject and try to not go off topic so much. Well if it wasn’t a Gladwell paper because he tends to go off topic in his papers. The break up letter took me so long to do, I was so nervous because I didn’t want to sound like a high school kid and get a bad great for not pushing myself to the next level.
My name is Yris Guzman and I’m a senior at Perry High School. I’ve always struggled writing essays. The things I struggle the most with is grammar, spelling, coming up with a thesis, and organizing my thoughts onto paper. I hope by the end of this semester I become a better writer. We all have strengths and weaknesses.
Distant, cold, and non-existent describes my relationship with writing. My relationship with writing has never been a close relationship. Writing has always been difficult for me. I have never hated writing, but it has been a constant challenge for me. I will be discussing my fears of writing, the value of being able to express your ideas through writing, and what excites me about writing more and more.
This semester we have done many activities/sessions that have really helped me grow as a reader, writer, and as a learner in general. We have done everything from writing a literary essay, to learning how to write with argumentative purposes.
I have always loved writing ever since we started having writing prompts in elementary school. I was always so excited to give out a story. I would make these elaborate stories that evolved some fantasy aspects. The only thing that would mess me up in my writing process is that I would have a difficult time setting up the start of the story. The video talked about this, and advised me to get a journal or diary. This would help me write anyway I like without judgment. I am fairly new to the revision part of writing. I would always turn in my draft as is, but now that I think about I would love someone who can give me some advice on my drafts. I've never had a full writing process myself. This has lead to writer's block in the past drafts.
I have a love-hate relationship with writing. I can write well according to some of my peers; though this could just be from the fact that I seem like the quiet, studious, type who has spent most of her time with the straight "A" nerds who went on to top tier schools such as Stanford. Sometimes I am not too sure of my own writing abilities. On most essays, I get a little bit above average grades and every once in a while I get a few more points than usual. I have noticed that my writing is better when I have to write about a topic I am passionate or know a lot about. The more I have to work with the better. Otherwise, my writing seems poor, forced, and somewhat bland. It usually follows a poor or basic thesis statement and lazy paragraphs. I believe motivation helps me to write better,
Seated in my petunia pink room at my tan desk an excruciating voice rang through my eardrum. “Again!” the voice bellowed. I hurried to rewrite my work. I started at the beginning with printed letters. A,a,B,b,C,c… I wrote every letter of the alphabet capitalized and lower cased. “Now cursive!” snapped the voice sharply. Again, I wrote all the letters but in cursive this time.
Within the past semester I have learned many critical lessons about my style of writing as a reader and thinker, and the steps and skills it takes to improve this art. As I wrote the short story analysis, poetry analysis, analysis of drama, and novel analysis I believe in the process of writing them, I became a significantly better writer. Because I am a systematically inclined thinker, it was difficult for me to grasp the conceptual tactics within writing. Luckily, the outlines and links you provided us helped me allocate the main points (and highlights) in my papers. This type of formatting allowed me to organize my whole essay so I know what I need to include in each paragraph. Because of this, I was able to connect my ideas and data in a more concise manner, instead of having my ideas strewn about.
There I was sitting in the guest room of my aunts house. It was hot, the AC was busted, and I have not even started my history project. “I knew I should have started this sooner.” I said to myself. Ten minutes pass, and I'm still writing the first paragraph, when all of a sudden I hear a voice. “Take a little break man; you’re stressing yourself out.” I tried to ignore it, but the next thing I knew my left arm began to reach for my phone. I stopped myself. “I have to finish this project.” I said to myself, but I was not strong enough to stop myself a second time. My relationship with writing has varied throughout my life. As a young child, I found that though the process of writing came easily once I started, I dreaded the preparation. However, whenever someone asked me if I enjoyed writing, my answer was always yes. I spent time in elementary school writing on my own; I found it to be a great creative outlet as well as a stress reliever. I know, you’re probably wondering how much stress could I have had at seven or eight years old. You’d be surprised. Anyway, that’s not the point of this letter.
Writing has been a part of my life since I was a young lad. I loved making up stories, writing them down, and then telling these stories to my family. My dreams were to become a writer one day, but those dreams were destroyed by my step-father. He would tell me that I would never succeed in writing and never make a career out of it. I moved on from writing at a young age and did not enjoy it growing up after that moment. Once I got into high school I did not learn much techniques on writing due to my 9nth and 10nth grade teachers never putting effort into teaching the students. They would put a movie on every day and just be on their phones for the most part. This way of teaching changed when I entered 11nth grade. My English teacher, Mr. Ho, was different than my previous teachers.
Hi, I’m Brooke Yliniemi. I am an involved high school student at Menahga High School. Through creative writing class, I was able to broaden and strengthen all my writing skills. I have always enjoyed writing, but never truly knew where to begin. With creative writing, I was able to find out my personal style of writing and what interests me. My writing has improved abundantly when it comes to writing poetry, and short stories. Through each section, I was able to grasp new skills and create personal goals to become my own writer.
