Personal Narrative: The Advocate

I have worked for The Advocate, a Baton Rouge award winning newspaper, for more than 23 years. When I first hired on in May of 1992, it was only to be a temporary job until I finished college. Before computers and electronic layout programs simplified this process with the click of a button, people had to cut out and paste the stories, pictures, and advertisements that appeared in the daily newspaper. This was my job: I was a Compositor. I worked evenings so this allowed me the availability to go to school during the day. I have always been a hard worker and taken pride in whatever assignment I was given. This character trait was recognized by others and I was quickly promoted to other jobs. My logic then was that I was going to college to get a better job and I was doing that without having the degree in hand. Little did I know that I would kick myself for making that decision years late. I continued to grow my abilities by attending classes at work and being mentored by my department head. As the years passed, my knowledge base increased and I held positions as a graphic designer, pagination team leader, executive assistant, assistant supervisor, and administrative assistant. By this time, I had also realized that my God-given gift was in the area of administration so, at the appointed time, I created a position as Office Manager for the two departments that I was most involved and pitched the idea to the Vice President of Production. He loved the idea. For the last eight years, I have worked as Office Manager of the Creative Services department and The Advocate Production Center. I have thoroughly enjoyed the work that I have been able to perform.
