A. One of the first concepts made in the book that I really connected to were the five practices of exemplary leadership. To Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Throughout high school I was involved in many organizations all for which I had a passion for. However, during my freshmen year in one of the organizations I was a part of I had always pushed to assert myself as one of the leaders in the committee since I did not possess a position of leadership like being president or even vice-president of the committee.
After numerous attempts of failing to inspire the other members in what all we could accomplish if we all worked together, or actually managing to complete one of the goals we all set as a group. I honestly

Why waste time in an organization that was going nowhere when I could be more of use somewhere else that actually accomplished the goals we set. Looking back I feel I made the right decision because in the end this was a great learning experience for me.
A couple years later I became Yearbook Editor and along with my Chief Editor I was able to motivate others by deeply describing the passion I had for the yearbook making process, how fun it all was, and most importantly the meaning behind actually being involved in the process of making the yearbook. That at the end of the year you call all say “look we created this beautiful book of memories together.” And truth be told because of the amount of collaboration that existed between everyone that yearbook was by far the best my school had ever created.
These concepts I believe will help me in the future as a reminder of what it takes on a leader’s behalf to achieve a company’s goals not just the work I put in but also how I work with those around
When I first heard about students being able to join yearbook staff, my interest was immediately peaked. I knew that yearbook was my calling. I applied to be on the yearbook staff in eighth grade, but my application got denied. When I first read my disapproval letter, my heart sank. Disappointment was written all over my face. Right then and there I wanted
This week explored and learned that there are desirable leadership traits to acquire, that becoming a leader can be a conscious process and that being a leader also means to owe respect and have a responsibility to others.
Empirically based, the writers begin the book by offering five practices of exemplary leadership: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act and Encourage the Heart (p. 14). In their
During my two years on staff, I have learned so much more about myself, and now, my family’s legacy just adds to the fact that I am passionate about it. In yearbook, I have learned to live, to be responsible, and to rely on a whole lot of Jesus and coffee. Through being co-editor, I’ve learned how to indulge in a professional conversation with people of high status and, most importantly, how to work as a leader while working as a team.
My five Signature Themes are restorative, individualization, achiever, deliberative, and empathy. Although I'm a bit stubborn, I did not like the fact how a VERY long quiz tell me who I am but at the same time, It made me realize things about myself I never took into consideration. Every theme besides achiever seemed to be accurate. Im a little dubious on being an achiever because sometimes I'm lethargic and I dont live up to expectations. Out of the five Signature Themes, empathy and deliberative describes me the best. Being empathetic means that I have the ability to step into the shoes of another person, having the intention to understand their feelings and perspective. I can relate to their situation and help guide them through their
Being a teacher in Arizona for 14 years, I have met a lot of people and have worked for four different principals and many more assistant principals along the way. The first leader that I hope to be like is my current mentor Kim Crooks; she was an assistant principal at a former high school and is now the current principal at Deer Valley High School. She is a small, young blonde woman in her early 40’s; she doesn’t fit your idea of a high school principal. I mention this because she is one of the most tenacious and driven people I have ever worked for and she works harder than anyone. She is honest when she evaluates teachers and their instructional strategies, she makes very hard decisions based
Yearbook is an elective which requires constant dedication and hard work. Yearbook also requires maintaining a positive attitude throughout the day and respect for the other kids in the class. I feel that I have the constant diligence to continue this elective, without doubt, till the end of the year. Whether it is to come early or to leave late, I am willing to persist in what I am doing. From the experience I have had through Journalism, I know what it feels like to work as a group, and to cooperate as one.
One of the biggest lessons learned from this course is that to be an effective leader, you must have a diverse skillset. I’m not sure if there is any one magical component or characteristic in being a great leader. One influence during my review of the literature was that; although easier for some, I see leadership as something we must continually improve upon. This is in contrast to my belief during my first day of class, when I thought leaders just
The following sections provide specific examples and are based on the five exemplary leadership practices as outlined by Kouzes and Posner: Challenge the Process, Inspire a Shared Vision, Model the Way, Encourage the Heart, and Enable Others to Act (13). In all of the instances subsequently noted, it is acknowledged that the examples should not be confined to any one of the categories. Shackleton?s practice of these strategies demonstrates that an effective leader blends all of the elements into a unified theme.
As I read this book I realized I have been in both of the situations mentioned in this book, the long range leadership and the short term leadership. My first job I worked at a school in which my administration was very supportive, visible and communication was always very high. The morale of the school was great and I remember our principal said that he would never ask something of a teacher that he would not do himself. He believed in doing lunch duty so teachers could eat their lunch in peace. I found out later that was very rare and every school I have taught at since teachers had to do lunch duty at some point. He would always tell us that our main job was to enjoy what we did and help students. He believed if you did that, then students
What Leadership theories covered in class are reflected in the book? Explain how, using examples.
8 The book represents good leadership qualities and many people can learn from them. This can be done from a business standpoint as well as a family oriented standpoint.
While reading this chapter I focused on a few areas that I felt were critical to successful leadership. Afterwards, I thought about these areas in depth from my own leadership stance. Additionally, I researched and read a few more articles dealing with these direct concepts they included: the concept that activity is not
I believe that developing leadership skills is not a rapid process, but it is a daily process. The best place people learn how to lead is from their daily experiences. Therefore, my job experience helped me to be more familiar with this topic and I gained additional worthy information from the class materials and lessons. Writing a biography was an amazing experience that helped me to look back in my life, review it in details, know what I did in the past and discover myself better. I did many of the book’s assessments and exercises and I found them totally thought-provoking and useful materials. They assisted me to think more about my leadership potentials and skills. Doing the exercises made me more aware of my strengths and weaknesses in the area of leadership. I read in the book about 10 qualities that mark a leader and help influence the leadership process. Those qualities listed as: vision,
Instead of adopting a single leadership theory, I have embraced aspects of the following theories that I feel align with my personal approach to
