On the surface this picture may appear as just a pair of kids playing dressup in an overly cluttered room. However, to us it was so much more. In this particular photo my brother, Wes, and I were out for a pleasure ride in our fly carriage with Joan the rocking horse. This was a regular activity of ours. Sometimes we would sit on the couch and pretend that we had a conestoga wagon, using blankets and we would spend all day playing in it. We would get so absorbed in our fake reality that we would feel genuine fear or joy depending on the situation we’d created. Why were we so easily entertained by our own imaginations when most kids were watching TV or playing on their Game Boys? My brother and I are both dressed in traditional Amish clothing
They would see a young girl in a red Christmas dress excited to see what was in her stocking. Not that the fact that her parents had lied to her about a fictional character: to excite her, to persuade her to be good all year, and carry on a tradition. To me, this picture has more meaning than showing the spirit of Christmas. For me now, this picture reminds me of the times when I was easily persuaded to believe in lies, was not aware of the cruel world where people take advantage of children’s innocents, there was no dream too big or too small, and finally where everyone was my friend, there was not jr high drama or who is dating who. Looking at this picture allows the viewer to see a glimpse into my life, but what they see and what I see are different. I see my innocents, and they see a smiling, happy, little girl in a red dress, opening her stocking. The times where I still believed in Mr. Santa Claus was an easier time. I was unaware of what was to come in the next
The California Indians were a very diverse tribe. Using their advanced skills and knowledge, they were able to thrive in their region for many years. They became skilled at working with the many things the land provided them and passed these skills down to each generation. This group of Native Americans have left their mark on American history due to their fascinating culture. The California Indians wore eccentric clothing, practiced sacred rituals, and ate foods unique to their climate and surroundings.
The techniques used by Tim to take viewers on Alice’s journey from a child to an adult are vast. Alice is constantly questioned about her identity, Tim Burton does this to signify to the audience that the film is not just about adventures, but at its core is a self-finding journey. A technique which reflected the journey that Alice underwent is her costume, Alice’s costume constantly changed to reflect where on her journey she was at. In the early scenes of the film, Alice is seen to be wearing a baby blue dress made using a viscose material and
Children’s child play has become a form of an unrealistic world. Although, it is considered for children to begin creating a creative imagination, the mind fascinates children into toys. Some child’s play toys are not ideal for young children, like the one and only “Barbie”. Barbie has become a worldwide toy product for children all over the world, from the North Pole to the South Pole. These dolls have emerged from one ethnicity to another. In Ann DuCille, “Dyes and Dolls: Multicultural Barbie and the Merchandising of Differences” the author talks about the race and gender differences; found in Barbie. She argues; “Is Barbie bad?” her response, was “Barbie is just a piece of plastic” (459). In contrast, this piece of plastic is not just a piece of plastic to young girls; it is much more than that. A piece of plastic that little girls all over the world wish they could be. Even though, it is only a piece of plastic to adults that Barbie significantly means nothing to them. Growing up, I owned a couple of Barbie dolls. The tall, long blond hair, blue-eyed doll was my best friend and my “role model”. I wanted to become exactly like Barbie. As a child, I thought only beautiful people who looked liked Barbie signified beauty. To my little to no knowledge, I soon came to find out no one really looks like Barbie, except people who want to become like Barbie. In my adolescent years, no one taught me Barbie was “unreal”; no one taught me it was just a figure in my imagination.
The apparel of Indians changed over the years, especially their clothing. Just as the culture has progressed the clothing have change, some people do wear their traditional clothes till date but on a larger scale, it has changed a lot.
“The three bodies hang there, even with the white sacks over their heads looking curiously stretched, like chickens strung up by the necks in a meat shop window; like birds with their wings clipped, like flightless birds, wrecked angels. It's hard to take your eyes off them. Beneath the hems of the dresses the feet dangle, two pairs of red shoes, one pair of blue. If it weren't for the ropes and the sacks it could be a kind of dance, a ballet, caught by flash-camera: midair. They look arranged. They look like show biz.” (pg. 277)
When the Europeans arrived in North America, they brought several new materials and items that the Native Americans were not accustomed to. Things such as beads and glass became common components of Native American artwork. Before the Europeans, the Natives relied on everyday perishable items like wood and fiber. They would also use hides from animals and quills as well. The later artworks of the Indians had a "daily life" theme to a degree. They would implement their art into things like baskets, clothing, headdresses and tools. The sky, underworld and earth all had great meaning to the Native Americans and all three were very evident in most of their works. Many of the headdresses could only be worn by proven warriors and they were
Some of my earliest memories as a girl were spent inside of an Amish community. Although it was not religion that led my family to that community, it was a unique experience that gave me an early start to a diverse perspective. After leaving the Amish community behind, along with my abusive father, my mother, my six siblings, and I joined a strict Baptist church. My mother soon discovered our Jewish roots and started taking us to a synagogue. After many years I was able to meet the love of my life and my future husband in college. I say all of this to emphasize the importance of perspective. Unfortunately, my mother refuses to meet my fiancé’s mother or attend our wedding because my fiancé’s mother is Muslim. This is due to a lack of education
The Native Americans they make their own houses and clothes. When they make their clothes they have to skin animals they have to skin animals so they want be cold. And when they make their own houses their house is close to a temple but it isn’t. Their house is made of mud and tree branches that they cut off and it has to be a group working on one house it takes a lot of time to build houses and make
The costumes were also suitable to settle the time in which the play takes place, perhaps in the 40s or 50s. The dresses worn by the female players, which were designed by Tove Freeman and Dan Rugomba, had a very à la “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” (1954) type of style. And more so, when four couples were dancing “Fingers to the Bone” by Brown Bird, in a scene called “Village Deli
Miss Devasquez had the boys turn, and they stood there blushing bright and clutching their intimates. Greg and Zack both knew that it was pointless. They even knew that the girls liked to see them cover up because it showed how embarrassed they were and it was fun to make them move their hands. They couldn’t help covering though. They felt totally exposed, standing there without a stitch on while so many eyes feasted on their bodies.

The clothing of the special occasion clothes in the 1820s and 1830s were completing different from now because back then it was more layers than what we would wear because they would have so much in the summer it would probably be really hot because have no air conditioning and all the layers. The man would wear suits for special occasions and most men do or something like that.Every day clothes for the wealth were they picked more comfortable clothes and shorten their clothes woman or man.Work clothings of then were more phyical laborer they were long fitted and less fabric and than full gowns. The craft room inside the windmill had high arched windows and fresh white paint on the walls. It was where Miss Pennycress spent most of her time when she sewed, painted, and even threw her own pots. There were shelves full of wool, cupboards full of threads and racks full of fabric. Boxes of buttons. Reels of ribbon. Bobbins and beads. All in all, the room was bright, cheerful, and full of rustic charm.
These television shows signified that before a couple decided to make a family, they should first get married and have a house. The woman should know how to cook and clean, while the man should have a job and a car. it was relatively up to the children’s imagination. I remember cooking food made of sand and vacuuming my nice, huge house with a tennis racket. I also remember having a play electric car, which my husband drove. These games resembled real life, creating an iconic image for most children. The “can 't-take-care-of-herself femininity”(Ducille 870) is put into kids head at an early age, starting from the cartoons they watch and fairytale stories they hear have “race and gender encoded inside of them.” It’s either... or no in between. children vision themselves inside of these images depicted by society and choose whether they agree or step away from normality. Although i didn’t play with barbie dolls, i believe i was still affected by the social norm. in fact, looking at these shows and hearing these fairy tales i knew i wasnt that princess waiting to be rescued. i was so busy trying to find my
