Personal Statement: Nordstrom

My experience as an intern at 3M consisted of carrying out laboratory research to ensure the safety and durability of the large-scale manufacturing medicine filter, Zeta Plus™. This experience advanced my ability to collaborate, think ahead, apply what I have learned in Chemistry and Mathematics, and increase my expertise in computer software. My current position in Community Relations at Travelers entails for me to communicate with and manage volunteer opportunities for over 3,000 employees, in addition to connecting Travelers with non-profit partners, event planning, and serving as a liaison in Saint Paul for my remote manager and team in Hartford, Connecticut. This position enables me to not only exercise and expand my communication and technical skills, but also allows for me to learn about myself. And lastly, as a Resident Advisor at the University of Minnesota, I have been able to serve as an academic, social, and personal resource for forty first-year students. As an RA, communication and time management have been at the heart of my success. As a junior studying Marketing and Computer Science, my interests lie within the space of sales marketing, technology and international business, and I strongly believe that Morgan Stanley will allow for me to expand my knowledge in these areas. A year short of its 100th anniversary, Nordstrom Inc. was in trouble. An expensive marketing and merchandising campaign begun in early 2000, dubbed "Reinvent Yourself," was flopping in its attempt to reach out to younger customers.

Nordstrom is an ideal store based in US equipped with fashionable items that can be bought through coupons availed through Nordstrom coupons. Interview question: What have you done in the past to contribute toward a teamwork environment?

Tell me about your current team. What are your team members’roles and how do they work together?

This store is an off-price retailer that buys the overstock or imperfect items from other department stores. The prices are usually lower in contrast to Nordstrom that sells exclusive clothes from various designers. The level of service is much lower than in Nordstrom. Salespeople are not as enthusiastic and motivated to provide that one-on-one attention to their customers.  As a result, they do not tend to build long-term relationships with customers. Usually a customer cannot find an item due to the store 's disorganization and it is difficult to ask for help finding specific products.  Furthermore, Ross ' strict return policies and guidelines make it difficult for customers to return items.

Nordstrom is one of the top retailers in the United States. With a solid brand image and a sound financial situation, Nordstrom is relentless in their expansion in the US, and are beginning to expand into international markets. Nordstrom takes pleasure in providing state of the art client support and having experienced sales people. In order to hold their position as the most successful high-end retailer in the United States, Nordstrom must continue to figure out ways to improve their brand image and customer satisfaction. At the moment, I am assisting with onboarding initiatives for the Government of Canada. This includes meeting with supervisors and colleagues across departments on a variety of topics, using a mixture of computer applications and networks to deliver key communications, and more. My supervisors trust me to represent the team at key stakeholder meetings due to my ability to converse with others.

Nordstrom’s is classified as one of the biggest U.S. department stores. Along with Sears, Macy’s, and JC Penny’s, Nordstrom manages each department in their stores as an individual buying center. Every group functions separately from one another, and is administered by a buyer who is in charge of all varieties and styles of merchandise sold. Promotions that can be used in the stores are included, as well. “The company has also benefited from a new computerized inventory system that gives buyers and salespeople the necessary data to make smarter decisions about what is needed in the stores—and what isn’t.” (Lamb, Hair, McDaniel 569). This new and improved system allows the department store to market a greater amount of full priced items, which ultimately increase sales. The buyer is also able to easily determine what items to obtain and exhibit in the store by using this system.

In the fall of 2014, I had just been hired to work as a deli clerk at the local Superstore grocery store. I was jumping off the walls with excitement as I had been pounding the pavement with resumes and cover letters for the entirety of the summer. I wanted a job so that I could save up money for a better drum set. I had been taking lessons for quite some time, but only had an old drum set that had been handed down through my family. I knew that working would not be easy, but I was determined to buy that shiny black drumset at the local music store!
