Personal Statement On Becoming A Nurse

Receiving this scholarship will be really helpful and will relieve a lot of stress for me financially.

I have always wanted to be a nurse: I do not think there is any task that is as satisfying as treating a patient physically, psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. I first pursued my LPN, and immediately I knew I had chosen the right career path. Every day, no matter how tired and weary I felt at the end of the day, I was invigorated by the sense that I had made a positive change in the lives of my patients. To build upon my capabilities to help others, I then pursued my RN. I am currently in an RN-BSN program and hope to begin a graduate program subsequently to become a family nurse practitioner.

My philosophy of nursing comes directly from my desire to help people. I want to be a nurse because I enjoy being around people in their times of need and I get internal satisfaction by serving those that need help. I remember when I did some volunteer work for a hospital and that is when I realized my passion for nursing. I believe that the cure for many of the people's ailments is not just in medicine, it is in the care that they receive as patients in hospitals and their homes. This is where I believe that I can make a great difference in people's lives by helping them recover from their ailments.

I cannot attribute my desire of becoming a nurse to following the footsteps of a family member, nor caring for a sick family member as I was growing up. I am a first generation high school student, furthermore, a college graduate. I became a mother at the very young age of sixteen. Being so young and growing up without the care of my parents, it was always said I, too, would end up in a rough situation and not be able to care for my child being so young myself. I continued out my days and nights being a high school teen mom. I graduated from high school in three years by attending night school while I was pregnant; allowing me to finish school sooner and obtain a better job that would allow me to take care of my son.

I should receive the Lucile Gustafson Scholarship because I have demonstrated a high excellence in scholastic achievement throughout high school and continue to do so at Waubonsee Community College. Throughout my senior year of high school, I have completed 17 college credits through Waubonsee’s duel credit program, all of which, I received A’s. I am currently taken 11 credits this semester though Waubonsee so I can start the nursing program this fall. Furthermore, I exhibit leadership in the participation of clubs. For example, when I was a Freshmen Seminar leader I lead a group of 25 freshmen and helped them learn about high school. I have shown outstanding citizenship by volunteering at Alden Garden of Waterford Assisted Living for the last three years, every Friday for four hours. I help with activities such as manicures, leading card games, and helping with special events such as dressing up as the Easter Bunny and setting up decorations for Christmas. I have participated in many volunteer events through school like helping a forest preserve by planting butterfly garden through Science National Honor Society. I also tutor the subject of English monthly through National English Honor Society. Hence, I am determined to give back to the community and further achieve in academics and leadership. I am the cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track team captain. I participate in the Pennypack creek clean up where I provide my service to the community to help make the creek clean and safe. After high school I plan on attending Moravian College for 4-5 years where I will double major in criminology and political science. After college I hope to join the Philadelphia Police Department to become an officer and better the city. This scholarship would mean a lot to me. As a former Pennypack student I love the community and any chance I get I help out. This scholarship would help with my academic need and give me the tools to better myself and be able to help more people down the line.

I have always wanted a career in which I can touch lives, that is when I discovered my love for nursing. In nursing, I could probably even help to save lives. I enjoy helping people in their times of need. I think it is the most fulfilling thing in the world, and nursing will allow me to do this for the rest of my life. In conclusion, nursing is my passion and my main goal is to become not only a nurse but a doctor, so I can not only save lives but keep people healthy and happy. I have many duties and responsibilities as a nurse, but the pay is pretty though. My focus right now is to continue working on getting my licenses and certifications then working my way up to the top. Working in a hospital makes you an important part of that community, which is something that means a lot to me. Making patients feel comfortable, important and giving them the attention they need and deserve are qualities that nurses must have; I’m someone who has these qualities. Being able to assist in making people feel better and giving them the feeling that they are going to be taken care of because they are in good hands is something that I want to be able to do as a nurse. Attending the University of New England to obtain my bachelors in nursing will bring me one step closer to my goal of becoming a CRNA, along with helping many people in their journey to get well
