Should Homework be Given in School?
Homework has been the long dreaded mundane assignment that students worldwide have to suffer from. It increases at an exponential rate as one progresses up the ladder called grade school. In the typical American high school, teachers become known not for who they are as a person, but rather the workload they assign. Often students don’t get the chance to receive proper feedback on their homework, and isn’t graded until after several days or weeks after the due date, therefore rendering homework as a waste of time. Take Dylan for example. After a long day of school, he is sitting at his desk at 12:17 A.M, struggling with his AP Chemistry homework. He knows Chemistry forwards and backwards, but having to do 45 conceptual and repetitive problems is a whole different story. Getting very frustrated, he shut his book and made his way to his bed, away from the mental torture, knowing that it’s not gaining him any benefit, and deciding that getting a zero would be a bitter pill to swallow, especially when his knowledge of Chemistry is inaccurately reflected by a letter on his report card. Although homework gives students a chance to succeed in a very competitive world, it takes up a lot of time in the day, it doesn’t help students grow academically, and it also takes a toll on the personal lives and the health of many students. Kids go to school every day for 6-7 hours, and are stuffed with masses of items, such as vocabulary, equations,
The cost of college tuition is continually on the rise and has placed many burdens on high school students as well as their families. Some of the burdens that are placed are a result of parents putting pressure on their children to earn scholarships. Some of the burden is a result of students putting pressure on themselves to earn scholarships. Then, there is the burden of high college debt once the student graduates. Is this pressure really helping our students or is it hurting them? The bottom line is college tuition is skyrocketing out of control and something must be done before it destroys our families and our children.
When I was a single parent, there was nothing I liked more than going to the gym. Although not popular to announce, it was more for the crèche than for my burning desire to workout! Having time to re-focus, have a shower uninterrupted and chat to other adults made all the difference. We hear time and time again that us mums need to take care of ourselves, but it can be a hard task to add to the growing demands we place on ourselves. Research tells us that keeping physically active is great at helping to manage or minimise the likelihood of perinatal (while pregnant and after) depression and anxiety. Getting out of the house with the pram and going for a walk is one free option...but it can be too hot, too cold, raining, overcast, boring,
Most high schools start anywhere from 7:45 – 8:30 am and go until around 3:00 – 4:45 pm, and that can mean 7-8 hours in school a day. It has been proven that teenager’s brains do not start working until later on in the day. Having such a long day at school can have many disadvantages such as straining your eyes at the end of the day trying to take notes, not having someone to pick you up on time, or even worse test scores. At the end of the day the students may be too tired to attempt to do their
Imagine being up all night doing homework after homework. Nobody wants to imagine that because not everyone likes doing homework at like 4 a.m. in the morning. Kids are supposed to get around 8-10 hours of sleep. Why would kids be doing your homework instead of sleeping and getting rest at night? This does not bother teens sleeping schedule at all. Teens are usually up at midnight talking to friends and playing on their phones. Middle School and most High Schools start at 8 a.m. but teenagers do not go to bed until 5 and they realize they have school then go to bed.Students are being forced to not have social time because of all the homework they have. Family life is impacted when students receive large amounts of homework to complete
Going to a place where poverty reigns supreme really makes you appreciate what you have. In past years the city of Detroit has taken on a less than admirable reputation. Crime and poverty are often associated with the former car capital of the Midwest. Most people wouldn’t want to step foot in the city, afraid of what they might experience. But if I had the chance to go back, I would take it in a heartbeat. Detroit is living proof that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
Society exudes pressure to be someone who you are not, especially to high schoolers. The sporty people play all the sports, the nerds are all up in their books, and worried about the future and what’s to come. Then there are the outcasts, who just want to live their life, and just don’t care. And because of this, it’s hard for them to show who they really are. This is notably true for Margo Roth Spiegelman, everyone saw Margo as someone she wasn’t. They saw her as the it girl, or the mysterious girl, or the girl with all the girl with all the friends. This, however, is not true, she’s just like any other 18-year-old senior in high school, she likes music and has (or had) a boyfriend. But in other ways she was different, she didn’t want to go to college, start a family, have just one boring job where you work in a cubicle all day. She wanted to travel the world, live on her own, and just not care. However, this was hard for her to show because of the pressure to be someone else, in other words, she was what society wanted her to be. Then there was Quentin, he had his own friends, didn’t have any real problems with people, and was just overall himself. This is why he was not popular because he was himself. This is what Margo needed and eventually learned that you have to be who you are, and not what society portrays you as.
Students should be required to have exercise in school because not only will they get a benefit out of it but also it will help them from depression and anxiety. Students should let their brains rest and toughen out their bodies. Your brain is already getting tons of exercise/knowledge each day. There are many benefits to exercising in college. Few of those benefits are: exercise prevents weight gain, exercise boosts your immune system, exercise can help you sleep, exercise is good self control. All these benefits will help each college student become an excellent scholar. You would not be tired during class as often, you will not gain any weight, and you will not have a problem waking up early to go to school. Exercising demonstrates how
It does not matter how well made a product is, if nobody knows about it, then it will not sell. In order to make this well made product sell, one must advertise its usefulness and practicality to the correct audience. This targeted advertising is a very exact science, and if a company miscalculates on the smallest part of their market research and advertisement placement, then it will not succeed in selling the product or idea. One example of a well placed and persuasive ad can be found on the fifth page of the August 4th edition of Sports Illustrated.
For decades, professors have struggled to keep student’s sole attention during lectures. This dilemma has become more prevalent in recent years with the increased presence of laptops in lecture halls across the country. Laptops provide an irrefutable amount of distraction with the entire internet being literally at the user’s fingertips. While some students believe that laptops help them take more in-depth notes and focus more in the classroom, most professors strongly refute this belief. Although they give several warnings against it, professors have seen with their own eyes that students are scrolling through their Facebook or Twitter feed when they should be taking notes. Due to the substantial number of students who multitask on their laptops instead of solely using them for notetaking, many professors have adopted policies explicitly banning laptops in the classroom. This debate between students and professors has prompted numerous researchers to study the effects of laptop use in the classroom, both on the individual using the laptop and those students surrounding the laptop user.
Everyone knows that graded homework can be overwhelming at any age. Homework is being introduced too soon into children’s academic careers. It is clear that the government is pushing it more. I believe that graded homework should be more of a choice not another chore. In truth, should students have homework?
“Since the one-room schoolhouse, teachers, students, and parents have debated over homework,” states Angela Garrett in her article about homework. In pre-k, teachers can send home coloring sheets for kids to do. As a student gets older the amount of homework he or she increases. School is a great place for kids to interact and grow with their peers. Reading, projects, and homework are all key components in school from elementary school age until you get out of college. However I believe students should not be given homework; homework causes stress, time away from family, and plenty of confusion.
Although homework gives students a chance to succeed in a very competitive world, it takes up a lot of time in the day, it doesn’t help students grow academically, and it also takes a toll on the personal lives and the health of many students.
Homework is essential in a student life, but that does not mean it is always a wonderful task to receive. Homework is not necessarily bad, but it can improve in many ways. In a 2004 report demonstrated that homework is even “becoming a routine part of the kindergarten experience.” It’s deranged that little kids around the ages of 6-7 years old are having homework every night to bring home. Younger children shouldn’t be getting homework every night, they should be getting it at least once or twice a week. If kids at a younger age get homework a couple times a week, it would benefit their health and spent time to go and get activity at a younger age. It is beneficial that getting some amount of work to take home, as kids can practice more on the material they learn and can also learn about responsibility when turning in homework. There is no evidence that states that homework below high school age benefits in standardized test, but that doesn’t mean giving a great deal of work is any better on their test scores. In the article Down with Homework, it states “No study has ever confirmed the widely accepted assumption that homework yields nonacademic benefits-self-discipline, independence, perseverance, or better time-management skills-for students of any age.” Homework is more proven to be essential in school than real life scenarios, which is pretty true, the only real thing is writing more and more can help in life, as you will always need writing skills in your life.
Have you ever heard a the bell go off signaling the end of the school day and you just want to get home and relax, but you remember you have a ton of homework to do? This constantly happens to me all the time. A lot times I get homework from multiple classes all in one day. Often after school I have sports which already takes up enough time. Usually I get my assignments turned in on time, but to the expense of spending time with friends or family. Sometimes when I get home and start doing my homework I might struggle with the topic and there isn't a teacher there to help me, so I'm left trying to search for websites that might help me or ask my parents to help. Having homework on a daily basis is causing problems for me, and I think incorporating time in the school day can really help in solving this issue.
When you think of school, what does it mean to you? Does it mean an education? A place filled with homework? A place that prepares you for the future? You may think all of these things about school, but one of them is not correct. Our form of education doesn’t completely prepare you for your career and what lies ahead. School is supposed to be a place that teaches you the skills needed in order to be an adult, but not all those skills are based on your knowledge of Algebra or knowing the history of the Roman Empire. Schools should require classes that teach life skills to help prepare students for their future.
