In the article Big Bad Bully by Hara Estroff Marano she discusses the main components of behavior that make up a bully, who can be a bully and why people choose to bully others. In the beginning of the article she focuses on suicide victims who could no longer take the mental, physical and emotional abuse of bullying. However, the sad truth is that more times than not there is always a classroom bully. Because we often overlook the severity of bullying choosing to close our eyes we get a harsh reality when someone commits suicide. It forces us to acknowledge the hard truth with open eyes that we have chosen to close for too long.

Parents need to supervise their children on social media and all places in their life, until the children can understand that this is not okay and that we can stand up to bullying. The two text “Victims of Bullying Live with the Consequences for Decades, Study says” and “Teens Taunted by Bullies More Likely to Consider, Attempt Suicide” both by Karen Kaplan are different articles but both have almost the same message that bullying needs to be taken seriously because it can lead to fatal outcomes. Bullying is a major problem around the world, but many people don’t even turn their heads when they see it happening. Bullying should be taken seriously because it affects people’s lives greatly, and in some cases it makes people suicidal.

First, bullying leads to suicide. A website that stands against bullying had this to say, “Kids who are bullied are more likely to experience: Depression and anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. These issues may persist into adulthood” (Aspa). The quote is saying that bullying leads to depression, anxiety, changes in sleeping and eating, and loss of interest in favorite activities. All of these can slowly lead to suicide and suicidal thoughts. Depression is also a huge factor of suicide. Next, bullying can also lead to self harm. Self harm is when a person wants to inflict injury on one’s self. Depression and anxiety can lead to this. An article stated this, “People self injure to cope with internal emotions, stop bad feelings, relieve emotional numbness, punish themselves, obtain a sense of belonging, get attention, and many other reasons” (Gluck). Students that are bullied may feel a need to “stop bad feelings”, “punish themselves”, or want others attention, and they feel like self harm is what will fill that need. Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.

Physical bullying can result in many extreme outcomes. The bully creates dangerous physical harm to their victims and in today society EVERY victim has a breaking point and retaliates in a violent way. Bullying becomes the dominating part of their whole life; they cannot do anything without thinking of the horror of the next workday. Weakened as they are, victims become an even easier target for people who want to harm them. It is a vicious circle, hard to break out for those terrorized by bullying. Many of them think of committing suicide as the last way out.

What if you were terrified to go to your school every day? 160,000 students miss school each day because they get bullied and are scared of what will happen (“Bullying Statistics”). Bullying has been a major problem in schools for far too long. Students should not be scared to go to a place that is supposed to be safe and where they can express themselves. Students that bully never get the punishment they deserve, which causes them to continue to act. When you go to school, you should know that if you are getting treated in a horrific way, the people who were treating you that way will get punished. Students who bully should be suspended from school.

Bullying has become a very hot topic in schools and on social media. There is a chant kids say “sticks and stones my break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” This is totally false. In truth, words can kill. Bullying is a fact of modern society; it can cause psychological effects and in most cases result in self-harm. I believe preventative measures to reduce bullying in schools and social media should be taken.

Bullying, in its many forms, is becoming an extremely hazardous problem that many individuals endure. Bullies torment others because they themselves have insecurities, have been bullied themselves, or have a mental illness that brings out the worst in them. Nevertheless, bullying can physically and emotionally destroy the victim, whether it is by physical abuse, cyber bullying, or verbal abuse.
