Social media tricks people into believing others are living a rather lavish life, more than they are. They post only the highlights of their lives, and never the negative. It makes others view them falsely and more presentable than they actually are, which makes those viewing their profiles feel less satisfied with themselves and their lives. There are even some people who drop all social media because of how terrible it makes them feel, but there are also others who thrive for the attention of social media and go through ridiculous tasks to take the perfect picture. Even I can admit how self-centered I really am, my whole Instagram over explodes with pictures of just me, when I don’t get enough likes or comments I sometimes delete it as I think it’s not good enough.

The use of social media has exploded in the last number of years, with more than 50% of adolescents logging on to a social media site more than once a day. Social networking sites include Facebook, Snapchat,Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram, and more. Classrooms are enabling the use of social media as a channel for communication and collaboration between students. The majority of people using these sites are in the age category of 17-25, but there are some children ranging from the ages of 9-16 that are also using social media. (Agichtein, Eugene) The use of social networks at this young age can be damaging to the child. They can be exposed to explicit images and are at a high risk for cyberbullying. Delaying the social media age requirement to 16 will decrease cyberbullying, the potential for sexting at a young age and protection of privacy.
Social Media allows people to keep up with what others are doing and share what they are accomplishing. It provides a direct liberation for someone who wants to share their feelings and beliefs, all they must do is type what they are thinking and then click the post button and their friends or followers will see what they have posted. Happiness is a feeling that people strive to have, philosophers have written their ideas about how someone can become happy and how to have The Good Life, whether it be through religion, or by not caring. Philosophers such as Aristotle, Saint Augustine, and Epictetus have their own ideas of what makes the Good Life, and people that use social media have aspects of the philosopher’s ideas in the ways they use the sites. Although, there are multiple other ways to happiness, and people are diverse; therefore, their Good Life is different from another’s. People also have basic needs that social media fulfills, they use the sites to communicate, and to have vindication from others from what they are doing. Social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have positive and negative influences on the lives that people live.
Relationships have always been and always will be a fundamental aspect of human life. There are so many ways people interact at so many different levels, and these ways continuously change as society develops. With the increasing prevalence of social media it is becoming much easier to connect to more people anytime and anyplace. Almost everyone you know is your friend on facebook and the list of suggested friends makes it as easy as one tap to add a new friend you may never have even talked to. Frequently teens and young adults meet a new person one time and add them as a friend on snapchat. And many people follow people they’ve never met before on instagram and twitter. These ease of access to “friends” can be extremely beneficial and incredibly dangerous. Even with the expansion of internet friends, real and personal relationships are still a necessary part of human existence. Because social media has degraded the meaning of the term friend, real world friendships have become even more valuable.
Up until May of 2017, you could call me an addict, enthusiast, fanatic, fiend, follower, junkie, or even a devotee. My fixation: social media. This particular hobby is wildly popular among my peers; those older, those younger; and even my parents. I tasked myself with going cold turkey. I decided to quit this down right waste of time and try to discover what life is like when I stopped looking to my phone for comfort.

Sadly, these are not point-values in Scrabble. These are the average number of tweets posted on Twitter in a week containing these words. Of course, these are not the only vulgar remarks left on social media, nor are they the worst. With the growing population of people online, these numbers continue to grow. Social networks were created to increase the efficiency of communication, from anywhere in the world (that has internet of course); however, users have taken this and turned it into an opportunity to take any thought, no matter how ignorant, and display it to millions of people, all over the world.
Since we were young, our leaders and elders have told us what to do and what not to do and why. The people we looked up to explained why by presenting examples of members of society who did not obey or conform, which ultimately resulted in shaming them for their wrongdoings. Shame has weaved into our country’s society and government throughout history. As Americans, we have witnessed the negative evolution of shame in our society through social media, maintaining order, and in politics, resulting in shame becoming a harmful tool for maintaining order and intentionally hurting others in a society.
Internet started roughly about 30 years ago by the World Wide Web. However, the first social media came out circa 20 years ago. The name of it was Six Degrees and it was created by Andrew Weinreich in the 1900’s. Six degrees had the capabilities of uploading a profile, making friends, and sending messages with family and friends. Nevertheless on 2004, Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg, a 19-year-old who created the biggest social media that changed the world. Till this day, Facebook has reached up to 2 billion users and still counting. Nonetheless, most users are from their teens to mid-40s, that have the capability of spreading information across the globe setting a chain reaction that created and spread fake news. “Fake news is easily spread through social media to large numbers of people who are willing to believe and share the fictional material." (Brennen 169-172) According to Gretel, “In the midst of a “nationwide debate over the proliferation of fake news on social media sites – and, as one 2015 study by the Media Insight Project shows, at a time when nearly 9 in 10 Millennials regularly get news from Facebook – the numbers, at first glance, may point to a bleak, uninformed future.” Therefore, teens need to use social media to disintegrate some of the repercussions of news.
Although social media has made society more connected than ever, people are also more alone than ever. An article from Forbes states, “Surprisingly, those who report feeling most alone, are those you’d expect it from least: young people under 35 who are the most prolific social networkers of all” (WomensMedia). This is because the 35 and under age group is the generation with the most technology. The more technology, the more alone people feel. Social media makes it incredibly easy to stay in touch with people, while also keeping distance. Most people find this easier and start to rely on social media and lose their real-life friendships, while becoming more alone by the minute.
Social media is such an amazing place! One of the sole purposes of social media is for people all around the world to be able to connect, socialize, and share with one another. As people, we spend so much time using sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. I’m no exception to that. I probably use social media just as much as the next guy. While social media may be fun to use, it’s not always what it seems. There is a side of social media that is much darker and unfriendly. Several users of social media applications do not use the sites for the purposes they are supposed to be used for. There are people sitting behind their computer screens with intentions to make people uncomfortable while using social media. We call these people “Internet trolls.” These Internet Trolls are the people who seek out conflict on the internet by inciting arguments or upsetting people by posting subversive or irrelevant pictures and messages in an online community. Many users of social media sites are particularly familiar with these Trolls because they are everywhere. Not only are they lurking around to cause negative discourse amongst people, many Internet Trolls are seeking to hack into the private pages of social media users.
