The CDC states that 23,000 people die each year because of medicated meat products. Would you really know the difference between medicated and not medicated meat? Could you taste it? Could you see? This is the questions the Veterinary Feed Directive or (VFD) has been trying to solve. Throughout this speech, I will inform you about the new act placed on today's producers. The main problem that the VFD is trying to solve is Antimicrobial Resistance or (AMR). What is antimicrobial resistance you may be asking yourself? Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria evolved in a way that reduces the effectiveness of the drugs. For example, it's like going to the doctor for a sore throat. Your doctor will then prescribe you with 25 pill prescription, though you only take 15 because you start to feel better after a few days. Although you might feel better, not all the bacteria have been killed. According to the CDC, AMR is one of the world's most pressing health problems we have in this world today. Every time a person takes antibiotics, sensitive bacteria are killed, but the resistant ones may be left to grow and multiply over time. As we continue to take these drugs our body becomes more immune to the medication, therefore, the medication will not work as effectively. Overuse of antibiotics is a major modifiable cause of an increase in drug resistant bacteria. When animals get antibiotics, drug resistant bacteria can survive and multiply in their abdomen as well as the
Although the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) was established by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protect consumers, a number of unintended consequences have arisen that negatively impact producers. These include increased costs of feed, negative impacts of small and rural producers, limitations to meeting new demands and the voluntary nature of the VFD. This letter explores the VFD and identifies challenges with its current implementation that impact our rural and remote producers.
Antibiotic use in animals has recently captured the attention of various professionals as the blatant, adverse effects have become increasingly prevalent. Agricultural manufacturers carelessly inject livestock with antibiotics in order to maximize their weight gain by minimizing the amount of energy consumed in fighting illnesses. This broad use of antibiotics in food-producing animals has contributed to the emergence and distribution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, resulting in either mild or fatal illnesses. To put the severity of this issue in perspective, legislators must realize that 1 in 5 antibiotic-resistant infections are caused by bacteria from food and animals. Although antibiotic use in animals is not the sole culprit of the
There is a continuing concern in the United States is bacterial resistance to antibiotics. The government continues to research and analyze the use of antibiotics in animals and humans. It is not a fact that the use of antibiotics in animals’ cause resistance in humans. Antibiotics are a necessity in the production of food animals therefore if they completely band antibiotics it would put animal welfare and food safety at a large risk. By implementing the VFD the government can assure people that farmers and ranchers are using antibiotics
The deeper I dig into animal abuse , the more I want to become a vegetarian. But it is not easy as it seems. The things that I have seen and read makes me sick to my stomach. To watch a hopeless cow, get whipped , is sickening. Watching baby Chicklets die in a big machine , brings tears to my eyes. Millions of animals every day die cruel deaths , and I no longer want to be an accomplice to the crimes. While it may be hard to retrain myself , I should and intend to just stop eating meat.
Antimicrobial resistant has been called one of the world's most pressing public health problems. Every time a person takes antibiotics, sensitive bacteria are killed, but resistant ones may be left to grow stronger and multiply. Although antibiotics can help treat bacterial infections, a possible side effect is that they can strengthen certain bacterial strains. Antibiotics are supposed to be used for bacterial infections, but are wrongly being used for both viral and bacterial infections. When we use antibiotics on viral infections, deadly bacteria multiplies and becomes stronger. We can fix this problem by using antibiotics for bacterial infections only.
Many people challenge the rules for several different reasons. It’s always appropriate to challenge the rules when the rules are unfair, or against what you think is right. You can challenge the rules to make them fair and equal for everyone. Just how the two excerpts, Animal Farm by George Orwell, and Texas vs. Johnson, by the U.S. Supreme Court. These two excerpts explore the issue of when it is appropriate to challenge the rules. Challenging the rules can lead to positive or negative outcomes. You can change the rules for a good reason, or a bad one, but it’s always better to challenge the rules in order to make them more equal.
About a year ago, I asked myself a question why am I not a vegetarian? After all, I am one of the green kids. I grew up with my vegetarian dad in a small town. I even joined a club called “Tree Huggers”. I knew that eating a mere hamburger a day could increase my risk of dying by a third. I knew that the 10 billion animals we raise each year for meat are raised in factory farmed conditions that we hypocritically wouldn’t even consider for our own cats, dogs and other pets. I knew that I was not alone, we as a society are eating twice as much meat as we did in the 50s. So, what was once the special little side treat now is the main course much more regular. What if I told you, that we can change our world through our food choices. The fact
Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, water pollution, habitat destruction, and other issues (Center for Biological Diversity, 2014). How could this be? This is because about 94% of the US population are meat eaters and the industry does not tell you what happens behind their closed factory doors: the industry is the leading cause in both resource consumption and global warming, their meat can cause diseases that can be prevented, and the industry abuses their animals. Converting to a vegetarian or vegan diet might sound intimidating, or sound like we might not get all of the needed nutrients but there foods that vegetarians can eat to get what they need to get. Despite not eating meat on a regular basis there
The United States prides itself on being an advanced society and helping both its citizens and foreign nations. However, some of the biggest problems facing the world today stem from sources often overlooked or even purposefully neglected by the American government. One of these sources is animal agriculture. Animal industries such as those which produce meat, dairy, seafood, and eggs are some of the main contributors to environmental decay, health epidemics, and even world hunger issues. Although proof of this is abundant, it continues to be ignored. Instead, we continue to go around the main problem and struggle to find alternate solutions only to arrive at inefficient and costly attempts. If we want our nation to truly represent its values, however, something must be done. In order to help solve issues regarding health, hunger, and the environment not only in America but in the world, the mass production of animal products should be outlawed.
Did you know the average American eats 209 pounds of meat per year. Americans need to drastically cut down on the amount of meat we eat because the animal agriculture industry is not sustainable, livestock have created more than 500 nitrogen flooded dead zones around the world in our oceans, and it's responsible for up to 80% of destruction done to the Amazon rain forest.
Each day, millions of Americans flock to grocery stores, picking out the food they plan to eat, often placing a beef product in their shopping cart. Most people set it down in their shopping cart and keep going along their day, not even thinking about how the animal it came from lived its life, was killed, and how the meat was packed. However, there are many people who oppose the meat industry’s execution of these processes, regardless of it being very efficient and inexpensive. There have been many inside investigations attempting to expose the meat industry, making it known to the public how poorly these animals, predominantly cows, are treated, in order to make a new law that would change the methods used. These exploitations have been
If there is one country that has made history in the world for following oppressive government policies at some point in time, then it has to be Russia. Numerous flaws have been cited about the communist policies that prevailed in Russia in the past. Under the rule of Stalin, the Russian people are known to have witnessed intense dictatorship. For example, it is reported that Stalin was notorious for sacking officers suspected of opposing his rule (Kennan, 2015). Similarly, Stalin employed divisive politics in which he reportedly set friend against friend until the society was marred by intense panic and terror. If the works of literature are anything to go by, then it is evident that oppressive governance was the standard style of government
The biggest problem with tube feeding birds is improper tube feeding which can result in aspiration and possibly death. If the tube is passed too forcefully, it can pose the problem of lacerating the oropharynx. If that happens and the feeding is continued, food can actually be injected through that laceration and into the surrounding tissue. This mistake can potentially causing life-threatening cellulitis around the birds throat. Never perform tube feedings on a bird that is regurgitating, dehydrated, or any patient that is not alert, non-responsive, or unable to keep their heads elevated on their own.
The overuse of antibiotics has been a problem for well over a decade. This misuse leads to many nonvisible problems arising within the human population. As the use of antibiotics increases, the number of antibiotic resistant bacteria also increases. When bacteria become resistant to an antibiotic, another antibiotic must be used to try and kill it and the cycle becomes vicious. Michael Martin, Sapna Thottathil, and Thomas Newman stated that antimicrobial resistance is, “an increasingly serious threat to global public health that requires action across all government sectors and society” (2409).
Because of this breakthrough, Scharfenberg believes people abiding by their religion’s strict rules on food, such as Jews and Muslims, can consume meat without it being ethically condemned by their religion. This isn’t to say people of religions which condemn certain products are now cleared to eat these foods, it is a matter of interpretation to what they believe is haram, or forbidden. Many Muslims who do not consume bovine and swine meat believe that ‘clean meat’ is ethically clean, but it still originates from a sacred animal.
