Re: Improving Law Enforcement Image Within Camden, New Jersey
Dear Mr. Palfrey:
When a police officer takes the oath, he or she must exemplify what it means to wear the badge: to serve the community, to be a friend. When a police officer puts his uniform on for the day, the last thing he wants is for the public to have a negative connotation of him or her. A police officers has one job, and one job only; to protect and serve the community. It is the police officer’s job to enforce the law, but it is also their job to make sure that their community is a safe and friendly place to

Camden, New Jersey was considered one of the highest crime ridden cities in the United States. There was even a probe conducted about drug enforcement corruption where 5 former Camden Police Officers planted drugs during illegal searches, pocketed money, and framed suspects. This has greatly tarnished the image of the Camden Police Department.
With the restructuring of the police department that occurred in 2012, the Chief of Police has taken to the task of improving the image of police officers in the city. However, the image of the department remains tarnished and people in the streets are weary of coming into contact and engaging with officers.
Enclosed is a business proposal that outlines the plan to employ a project that improves the image of the police force; to have the police scene not only as a disciplinarian, but as a friend. I also hope you will strongly consider this as your next project. I am confident that we can significantly improve the image of the Camden County Police Department. This plan includes several models from successful programs from around the country and a detailed budget of the plan. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal, it is greatly appreciated. Sensationalist journalism during events that took place between police and people like Freddie Gray, and Michael Brown have sowed stronger feelings of resentment towards police and feel that police are not there to help. Minorities feel as if the police are discriminatory towards them, and are more willing to send them to jail over nothing. Nonetheless, there is hope to turn relationships between police and the citizens Camden, New Jersey around. Research has shown that by putting body cameras on police officers, that the public and police officers themselves are more willing to interact and approach each other outside of emergency calls.
Marketing this change is also important. By marketing this change, citizens will have a more positive experience and more knowledge about the program. By holding town hall meetings and engaging citizens in the street, people will be able to gain the proper information about body cameras and have their questions answered. This proposal includes several models of success and suggestions from the University of Cambridge, United States Department of Justice, and the Journal of Quantitative Criminology. We can use these studies as models of success for a similar plan to be implemented here in
Police brutality and office involved shootings have sparked national debate and created a strain between police officers and citizens. Recently, there have been more home videos that display acts of aggression by police officers. These police officers often use excessive forces or a condescending tone towards people of color which is why there needs to be a better way to mend police and civilian relationship. People should be able to trust the police in their communities rather than fear them.
Society in general have showed the distrust, protests and many questions for the like hood of the police profession. The reputation of the police profession is that of the 6 pillars of policing in the modern world as outlined by the President’s Task Force on the 21st Century Policing, which sought to recommend steps forward. Under the banners of ‘Building Trust and Legitimacy’, ‘Policy and Oversight’, ‘Technology and Social Media’, ‘Community Policing and Crime Reduction’, ‘Officer Training and Education’, and ‘Officer Safety and Wellness’ – here are concise definitions for each one and what they mean for American policing ("Final report of the resident’s task force on 21st century policing," 2015).
In 2014, “groundwater makes up 60 percent of California’s water use” (Governor Brown Changes, 2014).
Lack of training and policing standards are closely linked to the myriad problems bedeviling police work, especially in small departments (Brodeur, 2010). All over the country, police departments report cases of officers being caught in uncompromising and unprofessional situations, resulting in disciplinary actions such as redeployment, suspension or sacking. These cases of unprofessionalism have led to questions being asked about policing, occasioned by recurring series of questionable and controversial encounters with police officers (Brodeur, 2010). The consequence of such encounters is increasing public distrust in law enforcement agencies.
Young adults pass perception on everyone they encounter. Law enforcement organizations are prime subjects to their perceptions. During my twenty years of service as a New York City Police Officer, I have encountered daily hassles, uncooperative behavior and hostile behavior. In essence, a general lack of no respect for police authority. I interacted with young adults in various capacities from minor to felonious crimes, domestic disputes, rowdiness and other calls for service that may alter their opinion of police. The purpose of this study
As we all know, Camden today is plagued by many problems including gun violence, poverty, robberies, and other crimes such as arsons, assaults, rapes, homicides, and auto thefts. Statics show and prove that Camden New Jersey is one of the top most dangerous places to live in the United States in the world today. You 're probably thinking to yourself of how many annual crimes there is a year in the city of Camden. Camden has a total of 4,431 crimes per year, which is a humongous about. With having a crime rate of 87 per one
To the veterans that are still with us today. I want you all to know that we do the pledge of
A concern that has plagued contemporary society lately is the use of police force and the sometimes racial injustices seemingly perpetrated by police forces. This issue has caused many citizens to become distrustful of law enforcement and to develop a disdain for police officers. Numerous test, survey, and data have been collected on the subject to gain a better understanding of the growing problem between the police and a weary public. With a increasingly socialized world connecting citizens through different mediums such as the internet, television, and radio comes the newfound problems of old issues coming to a head.
As a police officer you put your life on the line every day, you need to be willing to take risks sometimes be put at a disadvantage to protect the lives, defend civil rights and liberties, and they undergo risks and tolerate such inconveniences on behalf of strangers on a daily basis. As a result, police work has become one of the most prideful and selfless occupations in society. Making a difference in the quality of life of others is an opportunity that policing provides, and few other lines of work can offer. The Law Enforcement Oath of Honor as stated by the International Association of Chiefs of Police goes: “On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the constitution, my community, and the agency I serve.” (IACP) Before any officer takes the Law Enforcement Oath of Honor, one of the most important aspects is that they have a clear understanding of what the oath truly means. The oath is a somber pledge an officer makes when they sincerely intend to do what is said. There are nine parts to this oath, but there are three that stand out to me personally, the first being honor. Honor means that one 's word is given as a guarantee to serve and protect to the best of their ability. The second, integrity, acting the same that you would act behind closed doors or in public life. The third, is public trust, which you
Police officers take an oath called, The Law Enforcement Oath of Honor: "On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the constitution, my community, and the agency I serve."
This memo is to inform you of cost increases and changes in your medical insurance coverage options. The company has been paying 100 percent of medical care insurance for it’s employees, and has even absorbed the 10–20 percent annual cost increases to maintain this for your benefit.
The police have lost trust among the people they serve. This is because of the controversial use of excessive force when handling people. In some
Brown (2004) said that it is essential that police officials adjust their polices and practices to accommodate the changing needs of the populace as it continues to metamorphasize. He suggests that police help educate immigrants about U.S. laws and the role of police, and believes that serving a diverse society requires police to interact with minorities in a respectful manner while also seeking their input on local problems. Overall, Brown touts the option of community policing and shows that he is in favor of integrating the police into the community in order to create deeper bonds with citizens and form a sense of trust. In various studies, community policing has been shown to effectively increase positive relations between citizens and the police; when people begin feeling like they can trust the police, they are more likely to help the authorities out by offering information regarding crimes that they may have witnessed, or even acting as eyes on the street when the police are not
At council meetings citizens line up claiming they have been targets of HATE CRIMES committed by the police department. Some saying they’ve been physically robbed and assaulted others state there’s been retaliation against them by the police for reporting them. This leads to a major lack of trust within the COMMUNITY. Especially with that of working class citizens saying they shouldn’t suffer as well. So, the community is in some form actually asking for DIFFERENTAL JUSTICE. Hoping that good citizens will not be controlled the same way criminals are. There is little SOCIAL INEQUALITY as it seems everyone in Newark is treated as a criminal regardless of their status. Even those who want better for their community. Well others say socioeconomics do make a difference. Regardless, citizens are very upset and believe that the Newark Police Department needs to have more accountability for their actions. The OBSERVATIONS made by the film maker leads him to believe the police actions overall not just in Newark is gage of race relationships in the country, which is a bold statement considering how there are many minority and African American officers. There seems to be a STIGMA in this community on both the African American (men mostly) community and
Did you know that 42% of Americans find their local law enforcement untrustworthy? This is due in large part to the number of police related incidents that have been in the news of late. The negative publicity that law enforcement is getting has an adverse effect on all police departments, nationwide. In turn this is having an effect on police-community relations. To better the relations between the Ringgold police department and the community there needs to be more outreach programs.
