Former linebacker at the University of Tulsa, Phillip C. McGraw received his undergraduate degree in 1975 according to biography.com. Four years later, McGraw went on to open his own psychological practice with his father after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas. McGraw was raised in both Oklahoma and Texas. After several years of operating his own private practice and creating a company called Courtroom Sciences, McGraw launched his own nationally renowned talk show series called, Dr. Phil (Editors, n.d.). In his spare time, McGraw has written a handful of New York Times Best Sellers, including Self-Matters. Self-esteem and self-concept may not be synonymous on the surface, but after looking over their meanings, they appear interconnected. Just as self-esteem becomes impacted by personal surroundings and environments, McGraw posits that one’s “self” is, “like a chameleon, takes[ing] on the emotional colors of history and environment in which is has existed” (McGraw, 63). A person’s family, parents, and other negative life experiences shapes self-esteem impacts self and self-esteem. Throughout class discussions, the idea rose that even with environmental factors shaping self-perception or self-esteem, these emotions or feelings do not have to impact a person’s future.
