Photography Argument Analysis

Before there were cameras, camera phones, if you wanted a portrait of yourself or a family member you would have to find someone who could paint, and you had to stand for hours posing for a ‘painting’ of yourself. If you wanted to capture the beauty of the landscape you’d either have to paint it yourself or pay someone to paint it for you. Today we’ve come very far since then and today pictures are used for so much more than just portraits and landscapes. One of the major uses for photography is Art. The art of capturing and documenting a moment.

With the invention of Photography, and it becoming widespread, the artists felt that they were being replaced by this creation because artists, after all, were intended to create paintings/sculptures that were realistic. The camera could do that in mere seconds and perfectly.

In the visual argument that I created I wanted to portray the idea of deforestation and how it affects the animals and the wildlife living in these forests and other habitats.So In my image I included an endangered red squirrel leaving its destroyed habitat while carrying a bindle. This visual argument's purpose is mostly to inform but can also be persuasive so that people may take action in trying to save wildlife.

In our Unit 2 reading, it explains the art of photography and how it has really complimented paintings an artwork from painters such as Paul Delaroche. As many artists thought that “arts of painting” and “arts of photography” would leave little room for the creative representations painters and photographers provide. However, it turned out that Delaroche and many other were wrong and paintings and photos still thrive.

However as the authors stressed, probably more significant than the change in how images are produced, distributed and used, are the ideas to which the changes are giving rise and how digital imaging is challenging and changing traditional ways of seeing and thinking. A reoccurring topic of the essays, concerning photography, discussed during the course is the future of professional photographers/photojournalists. Some believe that the easily accessible spread of amateur photography can and has put a strain on the works of professionals. However, with magazines such as National Geographic still in print after over a century, it raises some questions. Many people can pinpoint the exact moment that influences them to follow a certain life path. For me, going to college in New York and becoming a photographer has been an innate part of my life. I entered my first photography competition in the third grade and have been lusting over the big city longer than anyone can remember. Although I am unsure where this plan stemmed from, everything in my life has been geared towards this goal.
