Many dancers take physical fitness classes like, stretching and conditioning, yoga, and more commonly, pilates. “Dictionary.com” defines pilates as, a system of physical and mental conditioning involving low-impact exercises and stretches, often performed on specialized equipment. Now, you may be wondering, “Where and how did Pilates start, and why is it so important for dancers?”
The start of my exercise science journey began when I was a little kid. I played sports throughout my childhood and into my senior year of high school but my desire to really exercise started when I went to gym class. I thought our Gym teacher, Mrs. Starnes was the coolest lady and I enjoyed how she could talk about our bodies and knew different activities that got everyone to exercise. Also, I loved watching college football and baseball as a child and remember seeing that when the athletes would get hurt; that they would get help from one or two people who would try to find out the problem and what happened. When I was little, I did not know that the job that I saw on television would be one that I would be aiming towards as I got older.
CrossFit is an intense exercise program that features high-intensity workouts. CrossFit athletes perform dynamic exercises like Olympic lifts and plyometric jumps. This workout program uses non-traditional equipment such as sand-bags, kettlebells, water-filled implements and suspension systems. Participants are challenged to do a certain number of repetitions in a workout in a specific time frame. These workouts are intense and involve very fast movements. Agility, flexibility, balance and power are all important concepts in CrossFit workouts. I stop exercising six months ago and realized how much it impacts my day to day performance. When I used to work out I would just go to the gym and follow a strict schedule, doing the same exercises week after week. My schedule was as follows, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I would perform squats, bench presses, and bent over rows. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I would do deadlifts, overhead press, dips, and pullups. After a while it gets very boring, and I stopped pushing myself to my limits. One of my friends had been telling me to try CrossFit and initially I was not sure I wanted to get into CrossFit, because all the people I have met that did CrossFit let it take over their lives. It is almost like a cult. On February 2,2018 I did my first WOD at Rocktown CrossFit in Harrisonburg Virginia. A WOD is an acronym for workout of the day. The workouts are usually only thirty minutes long, but we warm up as a group, so every time I go to the gym I am there for
Something that has impacted my life immensely is CrossFit, and for this reason, I will be doing my I-Search on it. CrossFit teaches healthy lifestyles and encourages one to be the best that one can be. The purpose of choosing this topic is for me to better understand the science of exercising and health. Besides being able to destress Pilates has shown me that there is constantly a capacity to improve because there is always somewhere I can better the moves. Additionally, I have learned that Pilates is not a competition therefore I should not compare myself to others. The people I do Pilates with are normally more advanced than me, so I have found that I need to focus solely on what I can accomplish. I will share these lessons with the kids so that they can become exceptional leaders in their communities and have stronger bodies while helping others. Through improving their concentration, scholars can think of creative solutions to the problems they face in their day to day lives. Throughout the three weeks, we can discuss how Pilates is helping them and if the students do not like it, we can also consider other ways they can find an outlet to de-stress after the course. The first organization I choose to research is IU Yoga and Pilates. I choose this organization to research because I am very interested to participate in Yoga and Pilates here at Indiana University. I have danced competively for the vast majority of my life. We were required to take varies dance classes were we did an abundance of Yoga and Pilates in many of my ballet classes to improve many dance skills. Yoga was very relaxing and also was a great workout for your entire body. Pilates helped build a stronger core. In college I have not taken advantage of the opportunity to continue practicing Yoga and Pilates like I did when I was dancing more frequently. I hope through my research I will attend yoga and Pilates classes that are offered here at Indiana University.
