The series revolves around the main character named Piper Chapman, a woman in her 30's who is unfortunately sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary (a prison for women) in New York. The reason because of this was that Piper was convicted of transporting a suitcase that contained drug money for her girlfriend named Alex, who was an international drug smuggler. However, the crime she had committed happened ten years ago before the start of the series. Piper decides to confess and serve her sentence, ready to leave behind her fiance, Larry, her botanical business and her lifestyle for fifteen months.

After that, Piper is transported to a van where she meets the two new inmates, Watson (a black woman with a short temper), the driver of the van, Morello (an Italian-American woman with a Boston accent and an easy-going personality) and lastly, Dayanara Diaz (a Latino woman with shy and quiet personality). Though Piper meets the inmates, we don’t really get to know them because Piper doesn’t have time to interact with them since this is from her perspective and her journey. She spends her first night in prison with other inmates and sits with them during lunch and starts to befriend them. Although Piper tries really hard not to get on anyone's bad side, unfortunately she had a habit of saying the wrong things at the wrong time especially when Red (a Russian lady with red hair) visits their table to hand out yogurts to the inmates. She hands one to Piper as well and Piper thanks her while commenting "The food here is disgusting" unaware of the fact that Red is the head cook of the prison's
She immediately told Larry of the situation and the rest of her family, along with getting the best lawyer they could find. The lawyer fought as hard as he could and with Pipers cooperation the sentence was reduced to fifteen months at a facility in Danbury, Connecticut. Piper was brought to Danbury by Larry on February 4th 2004, more than a decade after the crime was committed. Although it was very hard for larry to leave Piper, Piper had been feeling worse for Larry and her family. Piper felt as though she made life worse for Larry to live his life alone and to have to explain to his boss about leaving early on thursdays of friday, to go see his fiance in prison. Her family always have been in a long line of doctors, lawyers, and teachers, what would people think about them. Piper in no way felt sorry for herself, realising she had put herself in this position. Piper had agreed to keep to herself and not fall into a mess with becoming friends with the other prisoners.Much to her surprise piper became friend with man of the other prisoners. She first meet Annette, her new bunkie, a dark colored Italian woman in her fifties. Annette took care

Piper Kerman, a freelance producer living in New York City with her boyfriend, was incarcerated in 2004 for money laundering and drug trafficking. She tells this story in her memoir, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison. Kerman tells her audience about her escapades in her twenties, and her normal life afterwards. But one day she is greeted with two police officers at her door, and things go downhill from there. Kerman is later arrested after a very lengthy court case and taken to federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. Kerman makes light of her year spent in prison, writing about the different people she met and the experiences she had. Overall, Kerman’s memoir is an easy and fun read
This is the story of Piper Kerman, and how her personal story from being in prison relates to that of other female offenders. Kerman came from a well educated family, who were mostly doctors, lawyers, or teachers.“Much to the skepticism of my father and grandfather,” she writes, Kerman had majored in theater (Kerman, p. 4), and graduated from Smith College in New England. After college, her classmates and friends were going off to their graduate school programs or new jobs. Kerman, however, decided to stay in Massachusetts. She felt unmotivated pursuing a career in theater, and did not have an interest in truly continuing on with her education. Furthermore, she also felt that she did not have a “meaningful career” (Kerman, p. 4). Kerman
The Federal Prison System hearing is the meeting that I have chosen to watch. This hearing involves the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and took place on August 4th, 2015 at Dirksen Senate Office Building. Two panels, one including advocates and the other members of the Justice Department, testified on the overall effectiveness of our nations federal prison system. Piper Kerman, the author of “Orange Is the New Black”, made an appearance and shared her experiences in prison.
Orange is The New Black is a new and innovative series aired on Netflix that follows the life of Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling. Chapman was sentenced to fifteen months and serves her prison term at Litchfield Correctional Facility. She acquired the charge of criminal conspiracy after transporting a suitcase full of drug money to her then drug-running girlfriend Alex Vause, who is portrayed by Laura Prepon. Piper’s decade-old crime finally caught up to her. She has to give up her upper-class routine and her fiancé Larry, portrayed by Jason Biggs, for an orange jumpsuit and the new prison environment she was hoping to elude. The series follows Chapman’s unique experiences inside the prison, explores her interactions with other inmates and shows her animosity towards her ex-girlfriend Alex who happens to be in the same prison.
After reading A Woman Doing Life : Notes from a Prison for Women, I learned a lot more than I thought I knew about the life of women in jails or prisons. Erin George , the main character , gives readers an ethnographic insight on the struggles women face in prison. The hardships women face in prison consist of, and are limited to harsh shakedowns, poor medical treatment, and changes within the prison system that intentionally dehumanizes women inmates. Erin George before prison was a middle class women who seem to live a decent life, she is a mother of 3 and had a great support system within her family. She was happily married until she was convicted of murdering her husband which landed her six-hundred-three years in prison.
The speech I attended was a panel of women who had all previously been to prison. This panel was particularly interesting because these women were the inspiration for the television series Orange is the New Black. The Netflix original series is based on Piper Kerman’s book of the same name. The book was based on her experience in the women’s prison Danbury, which is located in Connecticut. Piper wrote about her personal story and the stories of many of the women she interacted with. Several of these very women came to Suffolk University to give a talk on their own personal experience in the prison system and their thoughts on the television series.
The show is based on Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name, and documents the experiences of a privileged Connecticut WASP named Piper Chapman who spends 15 months in a woman’s prison because she transported money for the head of a drug cartel, who happened to be her lesbian lover. Some of the show’s primary themes involve this clash of worlds, between the upper class white background of Piper, and the lower class, mainly nonwhite world of the prison.
Orange is the new black is a show that basis women's views from a prison who are not terrible people however they ended up doing something if not for themselves but for someone else that gets them in trouble with the law. Necessarily wasn't the best idea or the right thing to do. The women are viewed as being strong or weak emotionally independent, dependent.
In this society, depending on the crime many people may view women in prison as people who should be kept off the streets, such as thugs, gang members, and women who are drug addicts. A big misunderstanding that people have is that they see them as a lost cause. However, through each of these stories you get to know each person and their life stories
Orange is the New Black by Jenji Kohan has been streaming on Netflix since July 2013 by the production company Lionsgate Television. The television show is about the main character Piper Chapman who just got in jail. She is serving time at Litchfield Penitentiary, a federal prison for women in upstate New York, for drug smuggling with her ex-girlfriend (Alex) a couple of years ago. When Chapman goes to prison she is reunited with Alex, even though their relationship goes through ups and downs as the time goes by. The main focus of the television show is to present a public discourse about the criminal justice system, particularly incarceration in the United States. Through the social cognitive theory and the agenda setting theory one is able to see how Orange is the New Black draws attention to different issues within our incarceration system, specially imprisonment of women. From the social cognitive theory aspect, the filmmaker has communicated an acceptance towards distinctive identities by having a variety of characters in the show. Apart from this, agenda setting theory comes into play when particular issues within imprisonment are presented, like solitary confinement was throughout many episodes. These can be further examined and analyzed looking at all the elements Jenji Kohan implements in her scripts to open up a public discussions about social issues.
The War on Drugs has led to an increase in the mass incarceration of people of color and minorities, which is a problem in the United States. In the past thirty years, the number of females jailed across the country, many of whom are poor with mental health and drug problems. The increase in the incarceration of females has had a devastating impact on their children, families and communities. This paper will describe the authors of Upper Bunkies Unit and Orange Is the New Black who wrote their respective books about the same prison, the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, a low-security female prison. Both books contain many themes, such as broken families, limited services available and substance abuse treatment. This paper will also explore many factors influencing the success or failure of incarcerated females in reintegrating after their release from prison. Literature will be used to provide insight into the lives of females behind bars by focusing on their well-being and resources available. In addition, the current trend in treatment, such as substance abuse and mental health treatments will be discussed. Lastly, collateral consequences will be explored.
