Plagiarism In The Nursing Field

Plagiarism is borrowing someone's thoughts or concepts without acknowledging the source. It is illegal for a student to steal an author’s thoughts without permission. For example, Rebecca Moore Howard indicates that some students patchwork which means to quilt with a lot of resources from websites, books and other source on their essay without citations and references (as cited in Nall & Gherwash Aug 12, 2013). Even though students have written it in their own words, their writing needs citations and references because the source's information is not from their own ideas. They need sufficient paraphrasing by their own words with citations and references to avoid plagiarism (as cited in Nall & Gherwash Aug 12, 2013). George Brown and Centennial College each have academic honesty policy. While both school policies have a similar definition of plagiarism, they have a few differences in terms of the clarity and specify penalties.

Plagiarism is not just limited to taking information from resources without citations. According to Theresa Ireton, an assistant professor of writing in Centralia College, Washington, there are also subcategories of plagiarism in writing, such as plagiarism of structure, authorship, and plagiarism of self [4]. It is considered a plagiarism of structure when an imitator is paraphrasing by having different word choices than the original content. Plagiarism of authorship constitutes buying and turning in duplicate copy of another person’s work without any modifications whatsoever. Plagiarism of self is when an individual tries to utilize previously completed work as a resubmission for a different assignment. Even though the previous assignment is fully original content from an individual, it still constitutes as cheating due to an unfair advantage.

There are many definitions of plagiarism. The Code of Academic Honesty at Cornell University described this act as “the unacknowledged use of the words or ideas of others” (2005). “Using the words, sentences, arguments, rhetorical structures, and ideas of another without proper citation and acknowledgment” is how plagiarism was defined in the Code of Academic Honesty at the University of Iowa (2016). As a nurse educator, one of my students plagiarized a final paper. The purpose of this paper is to delineate the ethical principles involved in this situation, the ethical decision-making models that have been used in the past, the newer ethical model that I used, including the sources of information that I have considered, and the consequences for the student. Lastly, I will describe why I chose one path of action versus other paths.

Plagiarism is “the presentation of work for credit that is not [a writer’s] own” (Johanson, 2010, p. 267). Any information obtained by a writer from another source requires a citation in the text; therefore, a writer must provide a reference when paraphrasing or quoting another author’s material (APA, 2010). The use electronic resources or software to prevent unintentional plagiarism, educating students on how to cite and reference material in academic writing appropriately, and providing information to students about the consequences of plagiarizing.

Plagiarism extends beyond just the academic realm. There have been many instances, in professional fields, of integrity violations in written works. One example of this is Jayson Blair, formerly of the New York Times. After his news agency found that he had plagiarized an article. The article, which was written about a Soldier who was killed in combat, and his family, was found to be plagiarized from the San Antonio Express. (Belt, 2004). To plagiarize is to use the work of another and represent it as your own work. The overall concept is simple. Do not copy the work of another and use it as your own. It is commonly understood, although not always adhered to, that a student should not have another write their paper nor should they purchase a pre-written paper and turn it in with their name on it. Many students can lack an understanding of the more subtle aspects of plagiarism though. A common misconception is using the work of another and simply rephrasing it or using quotes around the portion of the work of another but not citing that source. In these cases, a student might not realize that they may be plagiarizing another author.

This can mean using the exact words of another writer, or it can mean taking the ideas of another writer and putting them into your own words. This is known as paraphrasing. In both situations, students should make sure they indicate the name of the writer and the location of the article they found it in. If students do not include this information, it is a form of stealing. The concept of stealing something that is intellectual property may be unusual for some students to understand at first, but it is really quite simple. The ideas and words that someone else has taken the time to compose belong to that person. To use those ideas and words without giving credit to that person is like stealing that writer's work. That is why it is important to let your reader know where you got the original idea from. It is not difficult for students to avoid plagiarism as long as they understand what the concept means. Once they understand what it means, they can learn how to avoid it in the ways this paper will show.

I can avoid plagiarism and keep my integrity by doing my own work and using my own ideas on articles I read. I can also avoid plagiarism by remembering the consequences if I do commit plagiarism. Again I should always run my work threw the center for writing excellence. The college has no tolerance for plagiarism and I have to uphold to that.

In colloquial language plagiarism is the concept of stealing someone’s piece of work or someone’s idea. It is clear that plagiarising is unjust and immoral, however now a days it is becoming more difficult to come up with original ideas as the media allows students to have open access to all information and the producer or author must be very careful to not use somebody else’s work unintentionally and claim it as theirs. It is important to educate students about plagiarism as it can carry major consequences. The concept of plagiarism with reference to policy will be outlined and also the steps helping students and authors to avoid plagiarism in this assignment.
