Another aspect of diction that Stuff You Should Know utilizes effectively is simplicity, it is important to keep diction simple and clear in order to create a sense of cohesiveness when speaking which also allows the listeners to understand the points being made. For instance "The laws governing the regulation of cosmetics have not changed in any way, shape or form" (23:45, episode 1). When one of the hosts were talking the law in terms of cosmetic safety and how it has been unmodified since a century ago, he uses very simplistic terms in order to keep his points clear, cohesive and easy to follow from the perspective of the listener. This is important as many podcasts do not give enough recognition into the importance of keeping your diction simple at certain points in order to allow the listener to fully understand the point being made.
There were some negative applications of diction throughout some of the episodes, where the diction was far too simple which lead to vagueness and confusion. For instance "I wish I was into the old mario whatever that one was the big world one" (4:43, Episode 2)” This is simply confusing and incohesive in painting a picture in the reader 's mind or persuading them to ascertain to a point being made. The host of the podcast having used overly simplistic terms was a negative utilization of diction as it distracts the listener from the actual point being made and causes sorts of disruption. From the listener 's perspective, it would
One of the main problems that Garner points out is the fact that prescribers often deny the need for linguistic evidence. As they are typically rather leery of change, they tend to follow rules and enforce them ex cathedra. Meaning that they simply take the rules for what they are and never question them because they came from the ultimate authority. Prescriptivists tend to oppose any change in the rules, even when the rule has become outdated and the meaning of the words has changed. Garner saw this issue and aptly decided to support many of his entries with not only adequate evidence for how it should be used, but also evidence on how it is currently being used even if it is not necessarily correct. He explains that while much of himself resides in the prescriptive camp, he dips his foot in the descriptive camp every once in a while. Prescriptivists, while having their problems, also bring a lot to the table. The rules which they enforce essentially give the descriptivists the springboard that they need to describe the language around them. It is absolutely imperative that one knows the rules of the language before he goes out into the world to see whether people are following them or not. It is also absolutely vital to have the skill of higher language for formal occasions. Garner describes this need when he brings up the fantastic point of registers especially when making the distinction between speech
The criminal justice system is meant to protect the innocent, and punish those who are guilty of a crime. However, no system is perfect, and as a result, sometimes the innocent become victims of the system that was meant to protect them. How exactly do these innocent people become victims of the system? Sometimes the person gets framed, and the crime scene is staged to point a finger at them. Sometimes, there is no strong physical evidence against them, yet circumstantial evidence is used by the crown to put them away. This happened to a 17 year old boy named Adnan Syed in Baltimore, Maryland, who was imprisoned for life, for the alleged murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Lee. Throughout the Serial podcast, Sarah Koenig is able to critically analyze information which proves Adnan’s innocence. Firstly, Asia’s letters gave Adnan an alibi for the time of the murder. Secondly, Adnan’s innocence can be demonstrated through the lack of any strong evidence and the prosecution’s use of circumstantial evidence which can be disproved. Thirdly, Jay’s constantly changing testimony is not credible evidence of Adnan’s guilt, making him innocent.
The Serial podcast, hosted by Sarah Koenig, is about the murder of young Woodlawn High School student Hae Min Lee. Hae was a smart, ambitious, and outgoing young lady taken from this world too soon. Sarah Koenig and the podcast takes us through the ins and outs of typical and unusual teenager behavior to try and uncover something unseen in this case. Adnan Syed, the now convicted murder, and Jay Wilds, the state’s only witness, are the key people of this story. I believe Adnan’s innocence should be maintained because Jay’s story should not have been used for evidence, there was not enough evidence to even arrest Adnan, and Adnan had a trustworthy alibi.
“A sentence can convey entirely different meanings depending on the emphasis on words and the tone of voice.”
Hank Hill uses multiple devices in order to get his point across but the one that stood out most was his use of diction. Hill
Diction is one of the things staples uses in his story. He uses strong words to show his emotion to his readers. Staples says “Her flight made me feel like an accomplice in tyranny.” (1) He said that because she picked up her pace when she saw him near her and it made him feel like he committed a crime for just being there. He also uses abstract words. Staples says “I was surprised, embarrassed and dismayed all at once.” (1) He uses these
In the book excerpt by Firoozeh Dumas, “The F-Word”, Dumas uses several techniques to hook her readers and keep their interest in her piece. It was her style, however, that did most of the work. Dumas' article has a very strong single argument that she works toward throughout her entire piece. She claims that the English language could do with a bit more “spice”, as she calls it (Dumas). Though this argument is only listed only twice in the excerpt, it is the underlying foundation of every humorous story as well as every painful moment. Throughout the excerpt, Dumas has paired together the use of her style with how she builds ethos in the reader's eyes. This creates a very good way to convey the argument, however it still lacks certain strengths. Had she written in a slightly more formal tone and included more evidence, she could have kept her humor and continued to build on her ethos by appealing to a more professional group. The use of an easy going conversational style in Dumas' excerpt helps to portray her claim in a way that most readers will be able to identify with, however, the style does not work well in appealing to a professional setting due to the lack of empirical evidence.
Michelle Obama once said during her Velvet Glove Convention Speech, “We learned about honesty and integrity that the truth matters... that you don't take shortcuts or play by your own set of rules... and success doesn't count unless you earn it fair and square.” This quotation means that learning comes from honestly and integrity, speaking the truth is important in order to succeed in the future. This quotation relates to the Ted Talk speech How great leaders inspire action, by Simon Sinek because he explains how many companies such as Apple succeed with consumers buying there products through the method of the golden circle. Leaders who make an impact in society, companies, and many high officials that inspire us, Simon Sinek revealed there

Diction is important. Word choice is key to a flawless paper. If people use words of little significance, takes away from the paper. I found using a thesaurus to find a better word is a great way to spice up a paper and make it a more interesting read. In past papers I have wrote this year, I have used words such as: plethora, incident, endorsed, anguish, depletes, culprit, institute, ratiocination. Using notable and worthy words can impact the paper completely. It can make or break a paper. Lack of diction would result in a boring, uncreative paper that
This is one type, out of many types, of conversations that go on over the CB radio. Truckers converse about everything under the sun. There are lots of good talk, like directions, road conditions, weather, traffic. police, hitchhikers, construction, accidents and more. There are even conversations about whether weigh stations are open/closed and events in the weigh stations if they are open.
For part 1: Language in Cultural Context, my class studied how the digital age has affected the English language. We looked at the development of new words due to text messages, social media, and teen slang as well as the usage change of some words. I was interested in the effect on society the idiomatic ways of english might have therefore I decided to write my written task in transcript form based on a segment called Celebrity Reads Mean Tweets in a modern television show called Jimmy Kimmel Live. This will simulate a situation where an issue might occur due to the evolution in English. On this show famous people take the time to read mean posts that are on social media, about themselves. The guest I have appointed to read mean posts is
A type of diction is informational diction. Information diction is made to be dry and boring. Only giving you the facts. You could use informational diction for a presidential speech or an essay for school. “Brown fall foliage colors come from tannin, a bitter waste product.” This is from an essay called Autumn Leaves: How Plants Prepare for Winter. The whole article is dry and boring to read.
The language of the news media, especially of radio news, offers a number of areas which are worth researching and investigating. An investigation of the linguistic features of the language in radio news - similar to any other investigation - needs a definition of what is to be studied.
Nowadays, although teaching and learning English has constantly changed, the Audio-Lingual Method still plays a significant role in many English classes around the world. According to Larsen-Freeman (2000), the Audio-Lingual Method was developed from an interesting idea that behavioral psychology and linguistic conventions are closely related to each other. Thus, this method aims to enhance learners’ ability by overlearn and habit formation.
