Grace Nichols writes a poem on an Immigrant who’s being nostalgic about his hometown and comparing it to Modern day life in London. The imagery in the poem shows his opinion of London which is mainly distaste of city life and basically millennial life.
The structure of the poem starts with Grace Nichols narrating an immigrant's dream. The impact of this makes the reader feel empathy for the immigrant as he misses simple life. There are words that are separated from the stanza's the reasoning of this is when he is dreaming these are sounds from London and he is blocking them out as he is reflecting on the island lifestyle and this emphasises the fact that he wants to go back there and want to be the ‘island man.’ An example of this is “groggily, groggily” which is the sound of a truck. When Grace says the “sound of the blue surf,” the repetition of the “s” sound emulates the sound of waves in the sea, going back and forwards this is also used of onomatopoeia. The sound is also effective as it shows how it relaxes him. “Groggily, groggily” is also repeated a lot and it's effective as it shows how the “island man” remembers life in the island by sound and it emphasises how much it reflects on his past life on the island by
