We will discuss briefly pollution and why it is important to keep the environment clean. The future of our earth depends on us keeping it clean. I will inquire on how people can help and hurt the environment, creating an anchor chart during this time.
Direct Instruction - I will ask students if they know what “oil” is. I will explain that oil is “petroleum” and that it is in a lot of stuff that we use and are familiar with. At this time I will project a small list I compiled of what oil is used for that the students should be familiar with. Next, I will focus back in by saying oil is one of the biggest industries in the world (“It makes people and companies a lot of money”). I ask students if they have ever heard about the oil spill in Arkansas (I’m confident most of them will not know about it). I will show students a short video and parade a collect of pictures I found on the internet of the oil spill. After this, I will ask students what they think. Does that look healthy for our environment? How do you think that affected the people and animals that lived there? What are other ways that oil spill had a negative effect on the environment (water, food, children, appearance, plants)? I will switch gears and begin to discuss how oil companies are all over the world and they always try to drill for the oil no matter where it is. I will ask the students why that might be a bad thing. Next, we will view the 360 video “Toxic Tour”, pausing at specific movements to pan around
The first TED talk video I watched is called “The Political Chemistry of Oil” by Lisa Margonelli (Margonelli). In this talk, Margonelli speaks of the unrestrained oil consumption that is occurring and her proposal for America to cut down their usage of oil. She introduces the topic of oil spills by talking about how disastrous they are. She makes the point that oil consumption only decreases when oil prices increase. Margonelli stresses the idea
The environment molds plant and animal life, but over the past century humans have been able to alter the environment. This change caused problems to the earth pollution to the earth, air, and water sources. Pollution extends to the animals, vegetation, and humans as well. These damages are mostly irreversible, and continue at a rapid pace. Pesticides are a large factor in this pollution. The earth can adjust to these chemicals, but not fast enough. Every year 500 new synthetic chemicals are introduced. Continuing to use these chemicals can be harmful to the future generations. The public is not informed about the consequences of these chemicals, and must find out on their own.
Pollution is the presence of any harmful substance in our environment and it has been around for longer than you may think. In 1885 the first true car was invented by Karl Friedrich Benz. It had three wheels could only seat one and it was powered by gasoline. At the time cars weren’t really a huge deal. But starting in the 1900’s car started to become popular. They ran on gasoline, like modern cars do, and began to pollute the air. The burning of fossil fuels from cars produces a large amount of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and much more. Today, nearly half of all Americans own cars. Pollution like this decreases the quality of the air we breathe and increases your possibility of getting asthma, bronchitis, and even cancer. In 2013 cars and other forms of transportation were responsible for 50% of the carbon monoxide that pollutes the air.
Have you ever wondered how pollution, or more specifically how fossil fuels add to the effects of global warming? Fossil fuels are organic hydrocarbons formed from the remains of dead animals and plants which have decayed for millions of years. There are three main types of fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. These fossil fuels have been the biggest source of energy to date. Coal been in use since 1,00o BC, replacing biomass as a primary source in the 18oo’s. massive consumption of oil started in the 1900’s and became the primary source fuelling cars, planes, other vehicles, powering electricity plants, etc. Yet despite being a natural source, these fossil fuels have greatly impacted the environment negatively, adding to the greenhouse gases, inhibiting the release of heat into the solar system and as a result is the cause of rising sea levels and irregular weather patterns.
What if one individual could save the Earth? Pollution is a looming problem in America because it is everywhere. Found in the land, water, and air, pollution harms the animals and plants as well as the humans. One conservative action a day adds up when every American participates. Everyone calls it America the beautiful, be that as it may, it cannot be beautiful if Americans ruin it with our waste, toxins, and harmful actions. If every individual in American made the choice to make one or more conservative lifestyle changes, then they can keep the world healthy and clean for future generations. Salvation originates when Americans see how deadly they are to the
All Americans know pollution is the introduction of harmful materials to the environment. It is throughout not only the United States, but even spread through the expanses of the world. According to National Geographic, the Antarctic ice sheet has traces of pesticides and other chemicals. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a huge pool of plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. With this to consider, common pollution exists like burning coal, trash, pesticides, and even car pollutants. (McDaniel, 2011) From as big as landfills to as small as trash laying on the side of the road, pollution is something residents of the earth witness every day and many choose to do nothing about it. In fact, many people pollute themselves on a daily basis. These examples are evidence that pollution is a widespread issue and needs to be resolved. Pollution is the greatest environmental concern because of all the different types involved including the following: air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution.
People are likely to deny all the information, which they do not want to hear and to believe that it can concern anybody else but not him or her directly. The problem of climate change is not the issue that can affect the humanity in one moment in the same way smoking does not kill the smoker from the first day of addiction. However, the fact of the existence of the phenomenon remains undeniable, and every human makes his or her contribution to the development of the issue, which can be both adverse and beneficial. Although it is reasonably believed that climate change is affected by the use of cars, emissions from factories and the growing amount of garbage, there are hidden factors that encourage pollution and hurt the planet, including people’s growing passion for traveling, and even their diets on a par with the way of life.
Capturing and sequestering the CO2 emitted by fossil fuel combustion before it enters the atmosphere.
With more and more people not doing their part to help and maintain the Earth, pollution has influenced and vastly affected how many of us live, the environment, and the health of many individuals. The term pollution scientifically means the establishment of contaminants into the environment that cause adverse change. It comes in many forms such as air, water, land, soil, thermal, and light. Pollution began around the world dating even dating back to when the Romans were present. The Romans would light fires, burn sculptures, and make armory, causing the process of pollution to start off slowly and transition into today’s time. Nevertheless, people today participate in various activities such as burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon dioxide which is doing even more damage than what the Romans ever did.
The words “going green” and “reducing pollution” is repeated like a broken record in today’s modern society, but many people know as well that executing these exact words are easier said than done. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, the problem of global warming and pollution have been a rapidly rising problem that has been addressed numerous amounts of times in the past and even the present. In the article, “New environment tax will hit businesses in China hard, say experts” by Maggie Zhang, Zhang describes that China has introduced a new environmental tax that will hopefully limit pollutants manufacturers release into the air. Zhang argues that the new tax may not be favorable yet necessary, not because of the attempt to reduce pollutants into the air is not enough, but the hidden problems that may arise due to this new tax being implemented. Although the new tax is necessary, problems that may arise from this new tax may include companies not being ready for the new tax, and a rise in consumer costs and supply.
Earth’s 2016 surface temperature was recorded as the warmest year since 1880, and 2017 is on track to be one of the three warmest years on record (NASA). The rate of climate change has been growing at alarming rates in recent years, and it is projected to continue increasing at higher rates in the near future. The negative effects of climate change are seen in the decline of human health and wildlife. While the United States government is attempting to diminish the effects of climate change, more regulations must be passed by Congress in order to minimize the pollution in the environment, decrease damage to wildlife and lower the average temperature on Earth.
Pollutants are impacting aquatic organisms distributed by daily human activities and natural occurrences. An extensive amount of pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons can result in direct significant damage, e.g. death. However lower levels of these harmful substances can be stored in an organism and increase as it continues and follows up the food chain, a process called biomagnification or bioaccumulation, having the greatest effect on the top predator of that food chain. A common result of the pollutants can lead to stress, changing of the immune system, inhibit lysozyme activity, damage gills, metabolism, and growth. Other factors include an excessive amount of nutrients in the environment. Nitrogen can make its way into aquatic ecosystems when there is an increase in nitrous oxide in the air, allowing eutrophication. Algae and bacteria feed off the nitrogen, so a high number of these organisms appear and use oxygen around them as the feed, causing hypoxic zones, or dead zones. Acidification, an increase in the ecosystem’s pH acidity from acid rain, which occurs from an increase in CO2 from air pollution. Aquatic organisms have a range of tolerance, and water with high acidic pH will lead the organism out of the range of tolerance, resulting in stress of the organism, and eventually death. Further studies are being pursuited to see larger impacts of globalized pollution on aquatic species and their ecosystems.
the residents, including residents in nearby towns that may rely on the company for employment. Individuals and communities are further victimized in cases of pollution due to the damage to our eco-system. Pollution damages living and non living elements of the eco-system and resources are impacted by pollution. Furthermore the wildlife and even family pets are impacted which in turn re victimizes the individual people (given the limited definitions to consider nature and wildlife "victims").
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. It is a major problem in America and as well as the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but damages us also. It has cause many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. It is all among us but we continue to live in our own filth. What is the reason behind this flawed logic? In this paper I will examine the problems and solutions for this issue.
Pollution has become a major issue over the years because it contaminates the Earth’s environment and affects human health. While some environmental pollution is a result of natural causes such as volcanic eruptions, most is caused by human activities. The increase of various types of pollution has made cancer pollutant more prevalent among the people, raising the risk of getting cancer. After being exposed to theses pollutants, the effects may be immediate or delayed. Some of the delayed effects, due to the exposure, can go unnoticed for many years. Another major issue that pollution creates is the tremendous cost for preventing and cleaning it up. However, we can not regulate the pollutants to the extent where there are no more possible
