Portuguese Man of War “Everything in Australia is trying to kill you, haven’t you heard?” (Rosalind James). Physalia, or Portuguese Man of War, is a salt water species of hydrozoa that thrives in dead zones of tropical and subtropical waters. The animal is often confused with a jellyfish, but it actually is a siphonophore. Blue Bottle, Physalia, is not just a multicellular creatures called zooids. The zooids work together to provide defense, help with feeding, to produce offspring, find a safe habitat, and use all the tools necessary to live a full life. While movement and shape are uncontrollable, they play a vital role in the creature living. They are carnivores, but are prey to Loggerhead turtles, certain slugs, and the blanket octopus. Although, the Nomeus Gronovii, a type of small fish, lives in the tentacles of the Man of War to feed off of it and for protection. In groups of 1,000 or more, they travel by the winds and currents for movement through the warm waters. For their life cycle, they reproduce in the fall and the eggs and sperm are fertilized by external fertilization. They are hermaphrodites that contain both eggs and sperm. After that stage, they transform into larva, the change into a polyp, and then they detach themselves from the budding polyp to become the creatures that there are today. Also during this process, Gonozooids make individual cells from asexual division which will contain all three parts, (the gastroderm, epidermis, and the mesoglea). Due to this reproduction, they are not endangered; but they are difficult to study since they do not do well in captivity. Also, they are difficult to find and study since the colors on their bodies absorb UV light that would normally kill most animals, but on their bodies, it acts as a sunscreen. Thus, allowing for them to survive. The Portuguese Man of War shows a prime example of how an animal can adapt to become an evolutionary success. Being in the hydrozoa group, they are a siphonophore that uses venom as a defense, eat small fish and marine animals, can reproduce by itself, live in most parts of the ocean. Currently, they are extremely difficult to tag and learn more information about them. Making these Blue Bottles, hardy and cunning
Although there are many reasons why the Spanish-American war took place, the most important was Spain's resentment of Cuba's desire to also become an independent nation. Since Cuba was one of Spain's last territories, they were unwilling to allow independence. As a result, conflict between the two parties erupted. Since Cuba was smaller and less equipped to fight than Spain, their economy took a tumble. Due to the fact that the United States had a great deal of money invested in Cuba's sugar resources, many Americans felt the need to wage war. Additionally, there were separate events that caused anger to American Citizens. One such event was the destruction of a U.S. ship used to protect the American citizens in Cuba. Although the ship's

Many wars have happened through out our history. From the B.C to the 21st century. But some people believe some of these war should be forgotten or not learned about. To be specific, the War of 1812 and this is major issue. The issue on this is that some believe that it should be taken out of history books. This is because the ink prices have sky rocketed and not putting this in would save them money.Others believe that keeping it would be better. This is because many great accomplishments came out of this war. My opinion is that the War of 1812 should be left in the history books.
King Philip's War, war that hollowed Native Americans against English pioneers and their Indian partners that was one of the bloodiest clashes in U.S. history. The war is named for Metacomet, the Wampanoag boss who received the English name Philip because of the well disposed relations between his dad and the Mayflower Pilgrims. The war preceded in the most northern spans of New England until the marking of the Treaty of Casco Bay in April 1678.
The rise of a powerful government and the enforcement of religious orthodoxy were factors that help established the Spanish Empire.
The Spanish-American war took place in 1898, from April 25 to August 12. The conflict lasted four months and it was between Spain and the United States, it was mainly provoked by Spain’s colonization and brutality in Cuba. The war was supported by many Americans, and expansionist which supported the thought of freeing the oppressed which was exactly what Spain was doing to the Cuban people. At the end of the war, America proclaimed victory and emerged as a newly and acknowledged world power who would do whatever it takes to fight and destroy oppression.
The Spanish-American war was the end of all European control in the Americas. The war was fought in the name of freedom, independence, and a new life. In the eyes of the Spanish rulers, it was a war for control, greed, and conquest. There was many factors in this event. There’s the causes, the ten year war, the small war, the war for independence, and finally the actual Spanish-American war. This time in history was marked by loss, defeat, war, suffering, victory, and freedom.
The Spanish-American War began in 1898 when the U.S. Navy’s battleship Maine was destroyed accidentally. This act led to a four-month long war, in which the territories of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines were annexed by the United States. After said war, President Theodore Roosevelt gave support to a Panamanian rebellion. This rebellion was successful giving the citizens of Panama freedom from Columbia and the right to a democracy. In return American’s gained total control of the Panama Canal, which allowed its navy to traverse it. This is one of the many examples of the United States expressing itself as a world power, in this case over Columbia. These historical events have been expressed by the political cartoon, “Columbia’s
The United States came to control Cuba as a result of the Spanish-American War of 1898. With the internal frontier officially closed in 1893, U.S. officials, religious leaders, and businessmen looked favorably upon U.S. expansion beyond its continental borders. Business leaders sought external markets in which to sell mass-produced industrial goods, and religious voices in America called for the civilizing and Christianizing of ~'lesser~' peoples abroad. Government leaders, and most ordinary Americans, believed the U.S. had a global mission to spread its way of life and uplift those outside its borders. The Washington Post declared, ~'The taste of empire is in the mouth of the people~' and Americans were eager to
Beginning with the simplest one-celled organism, an extraordinary animal rose in the murky waters entitled to a non-comparable killing-eating machine. This organism has become nature’s most genuine and most successful creature that it has remained unchanged for over 250 million years. Nature finally invented the perfect king of the sea. This animal has given the sea it’s “living” adjective; in turn, it was entitled—the “great white shark.”
The 59-year-old author, Sy Montgomery, has written 20 books, each based on a specific research or expedition she has taken part in. Her studies, which she descriptively incorporates into her novels, have warranted her various book awards and acclaims. She plunges herself into the lives and mysteries of Earth’s wildlife in order to gain a further understanding of how particular organisms thrive in their wild, dangerous environments. Although Montgomery was no expert in the field of cephalopods, she quickly learned all she could about the intriguing invertebrates through fellow researcher, experts, aquarists, divers, and colleagues encountered throughout her studies about octopuses. Through diligent research via articles, studies, field
The Triple Alliance was a military alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed on March 20th 1882. Each country promised support in the event of attack.
War has been a part of human culture since it's birth. It has led to a great many massacres and has shown us the evil that exists within the souls of humanity. Some have even gone as far as saying that war is human nature. To better understand the reasons behind war and how it affects others, I've examined several different societies and cultures so as to better understand the necessity of war and see the cause of their external war attitude. To do so, different variables from two topics (military institutions and external war attitude) were matched up and crossed so as to look into the answers to these questions. The variables were then calculated and through these graphs, I was able to find different societies in which
The “Art of War” and “De Re Militari” two military treatises were written one continent and around five centuries apart by authors that came from two vastly different backgrounds and cultures. Both authors penned treatises intended to inform and educate commanders about war yet the underlying theme is not victory but to ensure the survivability of their soldiers in battle. Sun Tzu and Vegetius differ on their ideas of this specifically on the relationship the military holds between the governing body as well as relations with the civilian population. However, what they do come together on ideas of efficient battle that minimizes Soldier loss as much as possible.
