People see them everywhere; on the television, on magazines, and on the internet; celebrities. Since they are in the media so much, they are constantly influencing society, especially younger audiences. These celebrities are not positive role models for today’s youth. They are not positive role models because they make people believe dangerous, and untrue information regarding health, appearance is more important than everything else, and that more money means more respect. Everyday people are paying attention to celebrity’s advice, since they seem to be very successful. They want to listen to their advice to make their own lives prosperous. However, some of this advice can be more harmful than beneficial. For example, many celebrities share medical advice that can be damaging. Liz Szabo writes, “Many doctors say they're troubled by stars who cross the line from sharing their stories to championing questionable or even dangerous medical advice” (Szabo). Celebrities are sharing medical advice that is doing more harm than good. On the contrary, some people will argue that they share more beneficial advice. Diana Gorgos states, “These spokespersons can also prompt people to get screened for cancer, concludes a new study. It found that a televised colon cancer awareness campaign by Katie Couric was temporally associated with an increase in colonoscopy use” (Gorgos). Although some celebrities share good medical advice, many share harmful information. Szabo further writes, “when
Parents should consider the negative influence celebrities have on children when depicted as role models because of how the children mimic celebrities, get brought down by what they can’t do, and how celebrities don’t take action for not being a true role model.

Celebrities that proclaim to not being role models are and will always be role models, due to the fact that there are too many people to be able to control, made even worse by the fact that the media puts them all over the internet. The problem with celebrities is that their size is too great, when Barkley says she doesn't want to be an role model,”I am not your role model. Parents should be role models. Growing up, I have always had to be a strong role model for my younger siblings. I learned to be modest, show them right from wrong, and offer my words of wisdom. It has been a goal of mine to be a strong role model throughout high school for my siblings, friends, and family. I had to keep my head up, even through my tough situations. In sixth grade, I received news that I had supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). SVT is a heart condition where I tend to have a faster heart rate than usual. My heart rate would go up to 280 beats per minute at times according to my heart monitor. My episodes consisted of my vision going completely black, my heart rate going up to irregular speeds, and it put a huge toll on my body. Hospital visits were a common thing for me before I had surgery, and I struggled in school due to the number of absences I had. It took about six months for numerous doctors to diagnose me, then send me to the children’s hospital in Milwaukee. I was part of the small percentage that got my episodes back after surgery. Throughout this journey, I learned to push through whatever life throws at me while keeping my head up. I never let anything stop me from doing what I love to do. I would always tell myself that there are people all over the world who have suffered more than I have.
In the article, entitled “The Impact Celebrities Have on Our Lives,” Deborah King establishes the reasons why being overly obsessed with celebrities can lead to bad habits. To begin with, King points out that everyone is too obsessed with celebrities. The article indicates that the younger the audience, the more likely they will try to be like them and want what they have. Furthermore, King writes that even though there are positive celebrities out there, people seem to be more obsessed with the celebrities that make bad influences on people. In addition, she emphasizes that even though there are celebrities that seem like good role models for their audience, they have a private life that no one seems to know about. As a result, King concludes
Police data published by Daily Mail on the Internet, provides evidence suggesting that one crime is committed every five seconds in the United States of America. Resulting in seventeen thousand two hundred eight crimes per day. This shocking number evidently demonstrates that on average too many crimes are committed everyday, and while this data is a reliable source that can be relied on to give people an idea of how many crimes are committed everyday on average; it fails in informing us on the reasons or in what situation the criminals were in to have to be in a position to break the law. Many criminals are thought to be bad people who do things just because they are bad, but many times not being a criminal for many people is inevitable.
Many people look up to celebrities as role models and imitate their styles, interests, and attitudes. Admirers believe that celebrities’ success gives other people permission to act in the same way, even when these decisions and actions are frivolous or dangerous. A large amount of celebrities are good role models but there are still exceptions.

However, when I was younger, my temperament allowed me to be more open and understanding of those around me. I attended Bulloch county public school system and as I became a teenager in middle school and high school. I learned a lot about myself as well others. My adolescence years in high school and middle school is what made me who I am today. Langston Chapel Middle school and Statesboro High school were diverse schools. Students were surrounded by different ethnic groups and learned how to mesh well with each other. I learned tolerance and acceptance of other groups but I also noticed others whom displayed behaviors that was not in the same beliefs as my own.

Role models in the media are also essential for young people. These are idols, actors, athletes, authors, politicians, revolutionaries or any other person who is known because of their fame. Media role models have a high influence over young people because they are often placed on a pedestal, and worshipped like gods. It is important for youth to be wary of negative media role models because they may glamorize truly wrong values. An example of this is seen if we look at Paris Hilton. She lives a fascinating and alluring lifestyle, yet was convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol. Because of her, many other young girls may believe that drinking and driving is okay, or even cool. Role models in the media are important because of the widespread effect they have on youth all over the world.
Kids see celebrities in the news every day and mimic what they do, thinking that they should be like them. But that is wrong. Most celebrities don’t know what they are doing in their life because they have a hard time telling reality from fantasy.
Do we want young teen girls living in a world where it’s normal for boys to call them “a fat piglet”? Many famous celebrities act inappropriately in the public eye. Since they’re so famous, if they do anything that should be considered wrong, no one really thinks of it as a mistake. For example, if someone at school hit, called someone an inappropriate name, everyone would make a big deal out of it. However, if a popular basketball player hit his wife, it isn’t published in news sources and showed to the public as much as it should be. Furthermore, public figures being perceived as a role model affects children in negative ways because they act inappropriately in the public eye, are violent, and break laws.
