Hobby farms are on the rise, thanks to the growing popularity of terms such as “organic”, “free-range” and “sustainable farming”, to name a few. People are getting more health-conscious by the day, and are becoming more selective when it comes to buying fresh vegetables, meat and poultry.
I understand that your food products are extremely popular across the country, especially your chicken products. I am writing to you about your treatment of the farmers that are raising your chickens. What you do to these farmers is unacceptable and needs to stop immediately. Your actions have caused hundreds of chicken farmers across the country to struggle financially and emotionally. You need to change the harsh criteria you put on the farmers, the process by which you decide which farms get bonuses and pay cuts, and you need to increase the wages these farmers receive in the first place (Nelson and Kaptur).
There are two categories for these birds. Chickens raised for eggs are called “Layers” and those raised for meat are called “Broilers.” A chicken’s fate has a lot to do with its gender. Male chicks have no economic use since they cannot lay eggs and not genetically bred for meat. They are basically waste products and must be removed. “They are crushed, gassed, or discarded in trash bags to suffocate, or simply piled one on top of another, to die from dehydration or asphyxiation” (Compassion Over Killing, 2011). According to People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), more than 100 million of male chicks are killed every year.” (PETA 2011).
Though women mainly grow food crops for household consumption, if they work more, there will be surplus produce for saleell on the market. It is known that women’s agricultural responsibility is to feed the family first, and only then can they engage in income generating activities. So this calls for women’s time and more effort to ensure that there is surplus produce from their subsistence farming for sale to earn income
