Prenatal Developmental Disorders & Their Treatment.
My paper is about Prenatal Developmental Disorders and their treatment. I also broke
down one of the disorders (ADHD) and spoke about how overused it has become in our
daily lives and the lives of millions of Americans who have this diagnosis.
I will speak about what causes developmental disorders, the type of developmental
disabilities and some treatment techniques for prenatal/childhood developmental
disorders. I will conclude with my thoughts on why ADHD is a diagnosis that is
misused, over-diagnosed and in many cases a way mental health companies justify
treatment for profit since ADHD is such as medical code that is approved for treatment
by many insurance companies.

Developmental milestones include sitting up, crawling, smiling, and walking for the first
time. There are a variety of milestones that include ways in which a child plays, learns,
speaks, behaves, and moves. All children develop at their own pace – even within the
same family – which makes it impossible to predict precisely when a child will learn a
specific skill. The earlier a developmental disorder is diagnosed, the earlier treatment can
begin, and the more successful the outcomes of treatment can be.
What Causes Developmental Disorders?
Developmental disorders and disabilities may begin to emerge at any point during a
child’s developmental period. Most cases of developmental disorders develop in the
prenatal period, but some may be the result of birth injury, infections, or other factors.
It’s thought that most developmental disabilities are caused by a mixture of factors,
which may include:
• Genetics
• Maternal health and behaviors during pregnancy
• Birth complications
• Infections during prenatal period
• Early infant infections
• Exposure to high levels of environmental
Each child’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual and language development will be looked at through age stages. All of these categories are as important as each other and can each have a substantial impact on the child’s full adult potential.
As a child grows they will need less physical contact and will start to use more words an more complex words, they will also start to ask a lot more questions, understanding this will allow the child to develop and help them to grow
*Social and emotional development: Children now begin to make friends, understand rules, they enjoy helping others and being given responsibility, they like routine and need structure.
ADHD classifies as a congenital disorder and directly modifies the brain’s functions, including impairments in concentration, emotional regulation, memory, organization and other mental abilities under cognitive function.
A child’s development can be measured through physical and language milestones, intellectual, emotional and social development.
Understandably of course it's a money making machine between the cost of therapy, medications, and depending on the medication weekly to monthly blood draws. There's lots of money to be made off of people diagnosed with ADHD. More than that though, is that it's become sort of a trend. “Few topics have generated as much public concern as the diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, outpatient visits for ADHD jumped from 1.6 million to 4.2 million per year from 1990 to 1993” (ADHD—Overcoming the Specter of Overdiagnosis. (2002). ADHD has
In today's fast-paced society, it seems that prescription drugs are a more reasonable and reliable solution for children and adults than diet and exercise for the "disease" known as ADHD. Rather than take the time to play with their children, or institute a proper diet, it seems that increasing numbers of parents would rather treat their children's unexplained zest for life with pills and doctors. While there are some explanations and reasons for the diagnosis of this popular disease, most children are improperly diagnosed, and are therefore taking unneeded medication. This medication is costly and it can be argued those who benefit from the sale of these drugs most are the
Children are all different and may learn and develop at different rates. Some children may not develop as fast as others and these children need to
ADHD has a laundry list of symptoms and effects that have to be considered in diagnosis
Over the past couple of decades there has been a huge increase in the diagnosis and prescriptions given out for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. According to a news report done by USA Today over the past five years use of ADHD medications have risen 40% totaling 39.5 million individual prescriptions ("New findings," 2009). When statistics like this are seen it is only normal for someone to ask questions. People are becoming curious about the legitimacy of the disorder, and whether or not the treatments being given to individuals are appropriate. The argument seems to be strong on both sides of the fence, but the extensive research done on ADHD leaves it hard for one to believe that it is a made up disorder.
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is quite easily the most common and over-diagnosed problem for youth in the United States. With symptoms that include fidgeting, talking too much, and impulsiveness how can it not be? Of course, according to the American Psychiatric Association, the child needs to display at least six or more of the 16 different symptoms attributed to this disorder for at least six months before a diagnosis should be made. However, there is a little known fact that brings the increasing amount of youth diagnosed with ADHD into question; schools get federal money for each child that is diagnosed with a mental or learning disorder, including ADHD. This can lead to teachers, or other school officials, taking advantage to get more money for the school. The father of a boy, who was being unfairly targeted by his school, decided to create a website to inform other parents about the scam surrounding school officials telling parents their children may have ADHD and need to be put on medication to control the symptoms.
The study titled “Illicit use of Prescription ADHD Medications on College campuses, by DeSantis, Webb, & Noar, (2008) from the Journal of American College Health,” is both quantitative and qualitative in design, because the authors used mass surveys to gather statistics and in-depth interviews to collect personal information.
For our controversial topic we chose the question “Is attention deficit disorder (add/adhd) a legitimate medical condition that affects childhood behavior?” Although everyone has their different opinions toward a topic that has been controversial in the recent years the information stated today will be information given by professionals that have looked into depth at this problem. As a group we have developed the people whom agree with this and the ones who disagree. First off we had Ashley, who was determined to prove that ADD/ADHD is a medical condition, telling us about people that have the same opinion. Lluvia, however also has some information to make us believe it is not a medical condition. Everyone has their own opinions, but they
The main two ways are environmental and genetic. Environmental defects are ones that are caused by the infant’s environment either in utero or after the birth. These could range from drug induced to the toxins that are in the environment where the child is born. There are also multiple ways that birth defects can be presented. The most common and accepted ones are structural and functional/developmental birth defects. Structural abnormalities are defects that occur in the structure or body parts of the infant (5). These could include cleft lip, heart defects, spina bifida, or anyone that challenges the normal growth of the infant internally or externally. Functional/developmental defects are associated with any abnormality that alters how a body part or body system works (5). These most commonly lead to intellectual and developmental disorders. The most common developmental defects are nervous system or brain problem, sensory problems, degenerative disorders, and metabolic disorders (5). Both of these types of defect can dramatically alter the child’s life and lead to many surgeries and therapies. If genetic engineering was used to alter the genetic material while these affected infants were in utero they could had been born completely
This period, which begins at conception and ends at birth, is approximately 270 to 280 days in length or nine calendar months.
