Reading and writing instruction do not occur in discrete sections therefore trying to tease out one from the other was arduous, but ultimately fulfilling. I began teaching the writing process before the popularity of personal computers or online editing devices. The process and its helical nature of constant revision and circling back is akin to teaching. I reread the standard, plan a lesson, teach the lesson and then revise the lesson. But, each year different students come to my class. I have taught The Outsiders about 15 times. At this point my unit is fairly tight. The prereading activities are engaging, the reading activities draw students into the book and the summative literary analysis produces quality papers. Yet each year brings
Although the book “The Outsiders” was published 50 years ago there are still things that are not timeless but there are some things that are outdated. Some examples of timeless things are that we still have gangs, and fighting. Also, some examples of outdated things are rumbles, escaping by a train, boys’ home. All of these examples show that the book still relates to students every day.
The literacy block should consist of a balance of whole-group, small-group, and independent practice. Tyner states, “The challenge in orchestrating the literacy block can be best described as putting together a literacy jigsaw puzzle.” (Tyner,2009). The components of a balanced literacy block should include modeled reading such as a read-aloud which should include texts above the students’ reading level, modeled writing so that teachers have the opportunity to demonstrate how a writer thinks while writing about a text, shared reading which includes the teacher reading most of the text but also allows the students to engage in choral reading with grade-level appropriate texts, shared writing to be used to focus on comprehension but may include the writing process as long as it is used together, small-group differentiated reading and writing, and independent reading and writing so that students can use the skills learned previously to produce a final product.
Books can be compelling to society, due to the powerful messages they show and their relevance towards real life. Many fiction authors have the ability to produce well-written books that are enduring and purposeful regardless of when they are written. The Outsiders novel is still relevant 50 years on. S.E. Hinton created a novel that would be relevant and meaningful for the present and future generations. The Outsiders is still relevant because it celebrates uniqueness, teaches society about social classes, and high schoolers can relate to the critical issues in the book that are apart of adolescence and maturation. S.E. Hinton’s ‘The Outsiders’ is relevant Fifty years on because it compels its readers to understand the human condition.
Reading and writing have been in our lives and around our lives ever since the beginning of time. It is something we are naturally born into. Almost every human being has performed some type of reading or writing, whether they live in the big city, or whether they live in the woods. They have all performed some form of reading or writing in their life. It is human nature. We are born into it. I have many memories of reading and writing, though I may not be very fond of it when it concerns schoolwork, it is something I have naturally adjusted to and it somehow has made me, and probably everyone else around me as well, who we are today.
I run my program through M4RA (Mentoring 4 Reading Achievement). M4RA uses a scientifically-based model of 1:1 reading mentoring for students reading below grade level, including students with disabilities. Students are mentored 5 times per week by trained peer mentors using Reading A-Z’s tutoring and mentoring packs. Like I said prior, I use an adapted version. I use the tutoring and mentor pack which includes Leveled Books, Fluency Practice Passage, Graphic Organizers, and Comprehension questions. But I created a lesson plan better suited for Middle School Students. I also created work on Clarification, summarization, Questioning, Making Predictions, Visualization, and Retelling the story. I identify each of the 5 areas of reading instruction through this program. There is so many different strategies that I use in this type of learning that all learning styles are reached during some
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton has been portrayed in a different ways in the visual version than the written version. The Outsiders by S.E Hinton is about a traumatised teenage boy, just wondering if he will ever be out of trouble. Francis Ford Coppola version of The Outsiders have some different aspects than the text and some similar aspects from the novel than S.E. Hinton’s original version of this story.
If I could describe my relationship with reading and writing it would most likely have to be, improving. Of course I would assume the same happens to all students that their reading and writing skills improve as they continue with their education. For me reading has been a passion, so my reading skills are pretty advanced and I can say I am able to read well. In my case, being a child of two Hispanic parents, I do have a slight accent that can get in the way and make my reading a bit rough. Usually it is not so bad, only on certain words that either I do not know how to properly pronounce or certain letters that my accent acts as a physical barrier where I have to sound it out more carefully or work around my accent. While that is the #1 major setback I have during reading. Even with that setback I can still say that I am confident in my reading skills, reading at a well speed, improving, reading various books all that combined allows to be able to read almost anything. What I do enjoy about reading is that I see it being able to bring myself into that world that the author is writing about or to envision the story they’re telling as a movie. I like the idea of just sitting back or laying down with a good book for hours and getting deep into whatever I am reading. Personally once I pick up a good book it is usually hard for me to put it down without the paranoia of not knowing how it ends will eat me up and I usually finish a book within a few days.
The Outsiders is a thrilling novel that is a heart racing drama that will keep audiences reading all day. S.E. Hinton is an author of many award winning books and she definitely knows how to capture the heart of readers with theme and mood constantly changing throughout the characters. This stimulating story is a classic novel that teaches lessons of discrimination, the need to belong, and the conflict against the protagonist. The town is separated between two groups and the gang of friends are constantly in trouble and trying to make it through their day. The book is full of trust and depending on one another. The Outsiders is truly a novel that entices the reader to keep ripping through the pages as love, death, and heroism take up the pages.
Creating and implementing effective lessons for a literacy learner who is struggling with reading and writing takes much effort and appropriate resources. Throughout the Literacy Development course, I have gained much insight and resources that have become valuable tools in addressing students’ literacy needs. Each week, I conducted lessons and activities that targeted the needs of many students, but my initial focus on was on one particular student. His individual reading level, spelling development, and writing abilities were analyzed and the recorded data was used
Kelly Gallagher discusses how to promote students’ writing in chapter four of Teaching Adolescent Writers. Gallagher assesses his students’ writing from the beginning to know where his classroom stands: “Each of my thirty-eight freshman students completed a timed writing piece on the second day of school and turned them in without their names on the papers” (73). This allowed Gallagher to assess his classroom as a whole instead of as individuals. He took this writing and sorted into piles he assumed were “heavy readers (defined as those who frequently read for fun),… moderate readers, and… light readers” (73). Gallagher based these predictions on the diction, sentence structure and variety, essay development, craft, and punctuation and editing skills (74). As Gallagher asserts, these predictions are not entirely accurate, but they allowed him to understand that the majority of heavy readers are skilled writers because they have an underlying foundation for their writing in their reading. This does not mean that all good readers are good writers. Gallagher asserts, “Reading alone does not explain why some of my readers write well and others don’t” (75). He goes on to create a formula explaining that reading paired with an “exposure to intensive hands-on writing instruction” lead to students becoming better
The purpose of this paper is to explain the rationale regarding instruction and decision making, analysis of student learning, and reflection of personal performance within the literacy assessment and instruction analysis project. The project entails five lessons administered to a student to provide help with writing, and ultimately, to help the child improve in his or her writing skills. This document includes background information, goals, assessment results, instructional plans, and a personal reflection piece. This project aims to provide best practices and explicit instruction to a student in the subject of writing, ultimately hoping to bring the child to a higher writing level by
Completion of my Bachelor of Education degree required a four month practicum teaching at a school under a mentor teacher. During my practicum at Maple Grove Education Centre in Yarmouth NS, I had the privilege of organizing my own unit for studying the novel The Outsiders. Most of the material presented in this unit is not my original material, however the organization and presentation of it was my responsibility. It was an enjoyable unit, the novel is exceptional, and I will definitely use this material in the
The read/write learner is advised to: develop lists, make outlines, obtain study guides, take notes, and write words to the notes several times. It is also recommended to read notes silently, rewrite and paraphrase ideas into other words. Converting graphs, charts, and diagrams into worded statements help the student with a strong read/write preference to understand the meanings contained in the visual material. Meaning is found in words; therefore the student with a read/write learning preference should search for words that describe the meaning of a concept by breaking the concept into textual points. (Fleming, n.d.).
I believe that it has not suffered few alterations during the last six years when I took this subject, and it is extremely significant since in that time this subject was seen and treated as separately fields. According to Louise M. Rosenblatt the relationship between reading and writing is demonstrated in all linguistic activities we can think. To illustrate the previous thought, teaching grammar, phonology, composition, literature and other fields involves an enormous relationship which goes in both ways reading-writing and writing-reading
Learning to read and write, or getting an education in general, is something that is easily handed to us in the world today. Imagine living in a world where you were expected to be uneducated, illiterate, and stupid. In the texts “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie and “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass, these young boys grew up in different worlds where they were looked down upon and were expected to fail due to the standards they grew accustomed to. Although Douglass and Alexie underwent contrasting hardships on their educational journey, they both shared the realization that learning to read and write was both a curse and a blessing. With those shared
