Child Abuse in America Child abuse is a huge problem in the American society. This issue is separating families, devastating children and destroying our society as a whole. Child abuse is a problem that affects parents, children and families. This kind of abuse can happen to anyone regardless of race, gender, social status or age; therefore everybody should be aware of this problem. Many people who abuse their children are often people who have previously being abused.

Child abuse in America is an ongoing problem and something needs to be done. There are approximately one million children abused annually in the United States. (Table 339) Cases of child abuse and neglect are reported every ten seconds, and researchers believe that there’s three times that amount that goes unnoticed. (Child Abuse: Know the Signs and Stop the Violence Against Children.) Something needs to be done for these children who are too weak and too powerless to help themselves.

Child abuse has been a big issue in the world for a long time. There has not always been child protective services like there is now. Children would be abused and neglected and nothing was being done because it was not being reported. The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was the world’s first organization in the late 1800s which was dedicated totally to child protection (Myers, 2008).

Child abuse is epidemic in many countries as well as the United States. It is estimated that every thirteen seconds a child is abused in some manner: physically, sexually, emotionally or by neglect (Friedman). Each year, there are over 3 million reports of child abuse in the United States involving more than 6 million children. Child abuse can be reduced with proper education of the parents and with greater public awareness.

According to our textbook, Public Law 93-247 which is the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), came into effect on January 31, 1974. This law is regards to childhood maltreatment. The law implemented the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect. Central agencies needed to be created in each individual state. The central agencies had to have legal authority to investigate and be able to prosecute cases that involved abuse and neglect. The States also had to develop their own definitions, policies, procedures, and laws dealing with child abuse and neglect. With the amendment of 2003, states needed to include foster care, adoption, abandoned infants and family violence protection into their services.

Child abuse is a very sensitive issue that needs to by carefully handled. Child abuse is defined as a no accidental injury or pattern of injures to a child for which there is no reasonable explanation.

The ultimate long-term mission for Prevent Child Abuse New Jersey is to prevent the abuse and neglect of the nation’s children. For completing the mission, two objectives are placed so that the goal can be obtained. Services; such as counseling, human services, home visiting and education are provided to children and families, and are one of the two objectives that is expected to change. The purpose of the services is to lower the potential chance of neglect or child abuse, and lower childhood trauma because of neglect or abuse. The second objective is to have more banners, displays, and brochures sent out for families and people. Information is sent out, so that people would be more aware of child abuse and/or neglect.

They are spread out through america and have chapters in the majority of states. Their goal is to end child abuse, and help the children that were abused. They help as many children as they can and do scheduled rides to raise awareness for the children.

Child abuse in the United States is a growing epidemic. Every year the number of reported cases, and missing children go up. This is caused mostly by lack of education about the different types of child abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Communities need to provide more resources to better educate the public about the types of abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Child abuse and neglect can be lessened by more resources, more education and to reach out to others.

Child abuse is a prevalent thing in communities and often time the victims are suffering in silence. We, as a society, have a bad habit of “turning our heads the other way” or “not wanting to get involved.” The mentality of “it’s none of our business” is an extremely dangerous mind set to have. It is time for America to step up and start helping the ones that are not able to fight for themselves. The children of our country.

These are activities that are targeted at members of the community and general population with the aim to raise awareness about the problems of child abuse. It involves an approach that targets helping families and children before child abuse occurs and not intervening after the harm has been done. This is very essential as every child deserves to grow up and be nurtured in an environment that is safe and stable which helps in the child’s total development such as the physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components. These strategies can be via a myriad of programs such as educational programs via public awareness programs, public service announcements, parent education groups, child educational programs, family support and strengthening programs.

You drop your child off at the babysitter’s house, and a couple hours later you pick them up and notice that they have bruises all over their legs, arms, etc. Your child says they fell but the bruises didn’t look like they had fell. You take matters into your own hands and confront the babysitter. They deny touching the child. So you drop them off again, pick them up and your child is complaining that the babysitter touched them in inappropriate ways. You confront them for the second time and they deny then you say “i’m having you arrested because you molested my child.” They take her to jail and press charges. After that you never see her again. This story defines child abuse and sexual abuse. The adult raped her and abused her. Her mom acted towards her child and spoke up. This is sexual abuse. Rape. This needs to put a stop to it.
