The contingency approach is applied in the company that there's no single system that can apply to all workplace challenges. Managerial employees work to control specific solutions to handle issues in the company and satisfy client needs. This means assigning employees to a task based on relevant skills, developing situational strategies to meet deadlines, and integrating these efforts to provide a fully realized plan of action. Managers using the contingency approach only deals with challenges and risks as these situations

Once managers have dealt with the organizing aspect, they then change their focuses onto how they can improve their leading functions. Leading involves the formal and informal sources of influences crewmembers have to abide by to inspire action taken on by others. One way Trader Joe’s emphasizes the importance of these was by giving their employees high expectations and expecting them to multi-task without regards to their actual job description. By offering the highest paying jobs, they are able to seek more talented and motivated employees who will share a passion for the food and high quality customer service that they aim to achieve. The last aspect of the management process is controlling. Controlling is process of monitoring activities against the original plans. To achieve ultimate success in their stores, they offer a Leadership Development Program, which is designed to empower employees to make their own decision about store
Sims (2002) writes “managers motivate employees, direct the activities of others, select the most effective communication channel, or resolve conflicts among members, they are engaging in leading.”
Leadership is a facet of management. It is just one of the many assets a successful manager must possess. The main aim of a manager is to maximize the output of the organization through administrative implementation. To achieve this managers must undertake the four functions of management: planning, organization, leading and controlling. In some cases leadership is just one important component of the leading function. Predpall (1994) said, "Leaders must let vision, strategies, goals, and values be the guide-post for action and behavior rather than attempting to control others". In some circumstances, leadership is not required. For example, self-motivated groups may not require a single leader and may find leaders dominating. The fact that a leader is not always required proves that leadership is just an asset and is not essential.
Prosperous businesses should ensure dedicated frontrunners and supervisors that cultivate, reinforce, and reassure member of staff endurance within a business. At hand is a substantial differentiation concerning guidance and supervision. Generally leadership can be perceived as a perception of communication and business’s visualization, whereas, management can be viewed as achievement of the business’s visualization. It is to my belief that when speaking of leadership and management, the two stands strongly connected, yet equally signify and sustain different assignment and obligations.
There are many individuals that confuse the roles and responsibilities of managers and that of a leader. While managers and leaders both have many common characteristic, the roles and responsibilities within a company are defined differently. The purpose of this paper is to go into detail about these different responsibilities within a company. A leader can be both formal and informal, for the sake of this paper it will be more geared towards explaining a more formal leadership role. Additionally a personal experience will be included to assist in this understanding.

In general, we are familiar with the quote managers do things right while leaders do the right things. In essence, the analytical versus the holistic approach of leadership addresses these two separate and distinct functions within an organization. For instance, a manager focuses on the daily operations of an organization with an emphasis on team delivery, budgeting, and supervising the employees. Contrarily, leaders within an organization focus their time on improvements and innovation. In particular, leaders can perform this function since they are not culpable for routine tasks and mired in the minutia. As a result, there is a misnomer that managers are leaders and leaders remain managers, but they are not exclusive. Therefore, being a manager and a leader requires different abilities and dispositions.
The four functions of a manager are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These are key elements that managers must understand to run a successful organization. I will view each concept as well as their roles to acknowledge how these functions have been related to my personal experience in the work environment. Behind the scenes of a manager, they spend an equal amount of time planning so that he or she can successfully achieve the leading and controlling functions. These functions are standard for any industry that is striving to maintain a strong organization. While reviewing this paper, try to think of the four functions as a method that is established to build on each other. The four functions must be performed efficiently, and when done correctly, an organization will reap the accomplishments from a well-defined plan. My own experiences of how the four functions operate illustrates that each role requires a manager to devote time and patience in order to ensure that the main principles are achieved.
So, from the above definitions we may draw a difference between leaders and managers as leaders do have a vision, goal and objective, which he tries to make effective and purposeful. On the contrary, the managers only have to maintain their efficiency on day-to-day basis. In other words administration is the task of managers but innovation is the characteristic of leaders and there is a possibility of a manager becoming a leader by setting high standards and goals for his people. It is not the task of this paper to present a difference between both but it is important to present it only because of its being necessary to clear the concept of a leader. So, a good leader is a person who can look high into the horizons when the people are looking down in the bottom line. This makes other people follow their footsteps as everyone wants to move towards horizon to explore new dimensions of practicality.

There many classical management approaches that have shaped what management is today. In specific, Henri Fayol had major contributions to the world of management through his five published rules of management. These rules of management to the four functions of management, planning, organizing, command, and coordination. He stated that the five guidelines of management were foresight, organization, command, coordination, control. Foresight is when you complete a plan for the future. The first rule, Foresight involves the construction of a plan for the organization’s future. This rule relates to the planning function of management as firms today also create strategic plans or furthering the given organization's success. The second rule, Organization is the duty that provides the company resources to actually implement the plan, this rule coincides with the organizing function of their group. Command is the third managerial rule that Fayol introduced and what he meant by this is, command is needed to lead and inspire workers to complete a certain goal. This managerial rule relates to the leading function of management because the leading function of managing makes sure that a task is completed. Coordination is the fourth managerial rule introduced by Fayol, and it means to fit diverse employees and efforts together in order to solve a problem. This relates to the leading function of management as well because it the function is concerned with getting problems solved and leading
“Management is the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling of mankind and other resources to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively (University, p 4 2011)”. The greatest achievement of an organization is to provide goods and services that customer’s value. Day today management is clearly defined by F.W. Taylor, Henry Fayol, Ma Weber, and others in classical management. No organisation can just have one type of management all through the organisation like operation can be scientific management and task oriented leadership. Marketing can be administrative and with action centred leadership. The overall leadership should be the same has the ethos of the organisation overall. . Current theories and models of leadership explain the influence of position upon the satisfaction and performance
The traditional views of a manager's functions are as an administrator working on short-term goals within the current systems and structures. The manager focuses upon making that which exists as efficient as possible. The four functions of management as planning, budgeting, organizing, and controlling resources and problem solving. These managerial activities, they assert, are most appropriate when organizations are basically stable and relatively predictable. On the other hand traditional view of a leader' functions are of one who takes a long-term, big picture, perspective and endeavors to initiate change for the improvement of the organization. When organizations need to adapt and change to new circumstances then leaders who challenge, motivate and inspire
