Online newspapers vs. print newspapers
In an early morning of a winter day with cold wind and snow breeze blowing out, hardly any people are waiting to put a quarter into an old automated newsstand to get there newspapers at a corner near the Union Station in downtown of St. Louis city. Hardly to find young people in that crowded but aged people are likely to prefer the traditional newspapers than the new type which is online. In contrast, most of young people who tend to spend most of their lifetime on the internet would rather choose online newspapers to update news. It is a recent debate whether the effectiveness of online newspapers are against old time print newspaper.
In this paper, I am going to look at how online newspapers

In the new model period, young people prefer to go online, update the news rather than reading the printed, it is because to them, news online are faster, easy to look for what they need and they just shut their computer down without instead of looking for a trash. They can have their lunch in a coffee shop; scroll down for the news instead of open page by page. But they forget that, that will put more pressure on their eyes without their notice.
“ ..There is no doubt that growth in electronic media is the future, but there is still a future for print.”, said Larry Killman, World Association of Newspapers. (“Paper battle online new sites”) In the near future, we can see that the tendency of the newspaper will be decreasing but it will not be gone for the next at least 10 years. From those information above, and in my opinion, the young ages are getting lazier and they rather sit in their room, look at the screen than go out and pick a newspaper, and since the new technology provide a small, convenience, reasonable price laptop, the number of people have their own laptop is increasing enormously. Beside that, most of the online news is free, while you have to pay for the newspaper everyday if you want to read the printed. I read online news everyday in the morning and it is very convenient for me because as a student, I am
Laura Finley states in her article “The Decline of Newspapers Is Bad for the US” that there has been quite a decline in newspapers in recent years. The cause of this decline is none other than our beloved internet. The biggest decline in newspapers was between October 2008 and March 2009. In this time period average newspaper sales decreased by 7.1 percent compared to the year prior. (14-15) Advertising revenues declined by an outstanding 30 percent in the first quarter of 2009! (15-16)
After the advent of printing nearly six centuries ago, the printed media was the only form of mass communication. Then came electronic medium. Though both print and electronic media deal with mass communication, there arecertain basic comparison. Literacy is basic requirements for printed media, only a literate person can read it. While, electronic media even illiterate person can watch news and understand the content through screen even cannot be read. Language in printed media more structured, tidy, flowery and reader-friendly but language used in electronic media is spoken and more viewer-friendly. In printedmedia readers have choice to go back, recheck and repeatable what they have read, different for electronic media that viewers cannot go back and recheck what they seen. Frequent update of news is not possible for media printed and not for electronic media that even minute to minute is possible to update for
Even though USA Today is a national newspaper, it is written in shorter piece and sprinkled with eye catching, colorful photos, graphs, and charts designed to address the needs of a sound-byte generation, which are never consider by any other media source and it makes the USA Today’s content refreshing and more engaging than other papers. Because of this the USA Today’s circulation grew rapidly from roughly 350,000 in 1982 to approximately 5.9 million daily print and online readers today. When comparing USA Today with other competitors like the Wall Street Journal, which has 2.12 million subscriptions and the New York Times, which has 1.58 million subscriptions, the USA Today remains the number one print newspaper and USAToday.com, is the internet’s top sites for news and
In chapter one, Wattenberg discusses the declining trends of Americans who regularly read newspapers between the 1960’s and present day. This can be attributed the aging patterns among generations who frequently read newspapers as well as with the use of technology rising. Reading the newspaper is a habit that either is or is not developed by the time one reaches voting age. With this, newspapers have become an older generation’s primary source of information, however, are still the best source for political matters. Younger generations tend to be more computer literate and have grown up with television and media more accessible to them than the previous generation. These trends not only reflect in American culture, but in other countries
Modern technology has made a significant impact on many types of businesses. The ease of access to information through the internet utilizing devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers has led many business to change or reinvent its marketing and sales structure in reaching out to potential customers. While this benefited many businesses, the digital age put lots of pressure on newspaper companies. Many people enjoys the benefit of receiving their newspapers digital which caused a significant reduction in the paper delivery of newspapers. In the article “How Internet Affects the Newspaper Business” by C. Taylor, the author mentions between 2001 and 2009, daily newspapers reduced overall newsroom staff by 25 percent. With labor
The internet is our modern source for news media; the importance of the newspaper has not only declined, it is in a sense, obsolete. We now turn to the internet for opinions, news, and entertainment. Even though the way in which we consume information (PBS) has changed, the importance of an unrestricted and watchful media has not changed. (Magleby, Light, & Nemacheck, 2010)
News apps, social media, and the internet allow teens to read and know more than just what was included in the daily newspaper. According to Glenbard East journalism teacher Jeffrey Kargol, “I believe it’s a lot easier to find the information because there are a lot more resources at our fingertips. People can pretty much go online and get informed about something, while other generations couldn’t do that” (Paragraph#8). Mr. Kargol explains that resources such as social media are more effective in informing teens because news is unlimited. In former generations, people only had access to whatever could fit into the day’s newspaper. “... Many agree that the widespread use of technology is key in keeping the Millennial generation informed of current affairs…” (P#9) Technology allows people of this generation to keep informed on everything that goes on. By doing a quick #hashtag search, people can know about anything and everything going on in the
Problem Statement: The advent of internet brought about both challenges and opportunities for the newspaper industry. On one hand, it required redesigning a new product suited for online customers and on the other it was an opportunity to reach to 123 million potential customers in this category. Thus to keep up with the pace of emerging digitization in every field, like all newspapers, New York Times also added online reading in their product portfolio. However it only worsened the crisis the newspaper was already going through. The operating profit declined by more than 76% from 234Mn$ in 2010 to a mere 57Mn$ in 2011. The circulations were steadily declining and the new online advertising could not compensate for print advertising
The age of newspapers has passed. Laura Finley’s “The Decline of Newspapers Is Bad for the US” asserts that without newspapers citizens are “deprived of information essential to understanding their world”. Newspapers are the source at which the world communicates and when they come to a cease, the information also ceases.
USA Today strives to market a newspaper high, in form utility with attributes and features such as sports, travel, and event sections meeting the needs and want of the reader (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). With 24-hour access to online news feeds their news is available at any time, the consumer wants (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). USA Today made newspapers slimmer for the reader to view on airplanes and subways that fit into a briefcase (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Access to e-newspapers through portable devices makes it simple for readers to view today (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Being able to purchase USA Today online through the App with a credit card allows for possession utilization (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). The accessibility and simplicity of using the online experience allow the consumer psychological utility (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014).
And, it’s also widespread on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, and Google Plus. Since the newspaper is also online and so widespread it helps the popularity of it grow. A good amount of today’s generation and population are online rather than reading the paper in their hands. “When it comes to modern media, there’s no denying we live in a social cyber world. News is no longer the province of only the news channels, and oftentimes, what the news channels produce isn’t always news. The whole landscape has changed.”
After reviewing the State Media Report I discovered some interesting information that I was previously unaware of; specifically, that only 5 percent of U.S. adults rated newspapers as their “most helpful” source in information for the presidential election (2). Though newspapers are dwindling, I still would have thought that adults would turn to newspapers for helpful information. Learning this information, I understand that individuals now deem information from the Internet as “most helpful”.
The newspaper industry is undergoing a radical change in three primary areas caused by technology. First, the underlying two-sided business model is changing. With the Advent of internet, news content is easily and freely available from various sources but lacks quality journalism and credibility. Revenues from online advertising are not large enough to compensate for decline in revenues from print advertising & subscription. Newspaper industry is experiencing new realm of new content delivery and in process of understanding and establishing sustainable sources and
Most of the time the news content is available in real time and can be accessed anytime and almost anywhere in the world. The majority of the online news providers do not require a fee. As a result, the number of readers willing to pay for the news has gone down, causing a direct impact on the sales of the printed newspapers.
In 1760, The Boston News-Letter was the first newspaper to be continuously published in the United States. A 250-year legacy of printed news could not have lasted if it newspapers didn't not have it uses. Aside from the entertainment value, newspapers exist for the main purpose of bringing news of international, national, and local news to the doorsteps of the people. Without such frequent and stable form of communication, it would be difficult for any nation to call itself a free democracy. Today however, it cannot be expected that newsprint will last forever. Statistical data firmly suggests newspapers around the world are falling both in number and circulation. The past several years have been difficult for newspapers as other news
